I wonder if the 240m got yours to be built faster than normal. Congrats on the fastest order ever, it has to be a record or something. I'm putting an Intel G2 160GB SSD in mine. It's currently in my M11x that's going to my fiancee lol. I want to upgrade my 5300 to a 6300 when I get the money too. It sounds like a monster wifi card.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention that I have a killer deal on the table for the 920 with alitunay.

I am afraid of getting dreaded throttling with that cpu (consumes a lot of power). I know that the 5870 consumes less power than the 260 so that may help even things out a tiny bit.

it probably did cause i asked for it but was turned down but its now shipped cant really complain bout two weeks for build and yet of all people got yours in under a week plus the time to ship. i still cant get that idea through my head how it was so fast compared to mine.

youll also be able to maybe test how much battery can be attained with the 5870 and the 620m wonder how much longer than the 260m and 720qm

Hey anyone else read that Apple's New macbookpro revison has a 512gb SSd option? im wondering if they indeed have a 512 ssd or two 256gb SSD's.... wtv the case.. its a 1300$ upgrade LOL.. guess i'll just have to rob a bank tomorrow...this way i could slap in a 920xm, a blu-ray burner, a 512gb ssd, and a 5870m no problem :D :D :D :D

Now if i could just find that old ski-mask...

Try warez-bb.org, they have everything you could possibly think of ;) You have to sign up but it's free and you can use a dummy email address. I use Rlslog to see what's new but I download everything virus free from warez-bb.

Ok dell's customer support is utter crap in the UK. I called them last night at 5pm my time, to try and sort out a problem with my laptop. When I ordered it I picked the Intel 5300 wireless card, but when my laptop arrived it has a Broadcom 802.11g wireless card in it. After being passed around between 6 different people and being told I needed to speak to Tech support, I was transferred to the tech support reception, only to be told that they were only open between 8am - 5pm. So I called them this morning on the number that they gave me which then told me it's changed and I should redial a different number which got me through to XPS support. (Deep breath)

After talking to him and again being told that this was the wrong department I was then transferred through to Alienware support (yay) who told me they were open all the time!! Now this guy here was very helpful and fingers crossed said he'd get a tech guy to come and replace the card for the correct one. So hopefully he will call me back like he said and confirm this.

I just wondered if anyone else has had so much fun when contacting Dell!

Oh yeah sorry about the long post :)

Edit They called back and said it's not a technical fault So I'd have to speak to customer support, but thankfully he spoke to them first and explained so they are sending out a replacement wifi card! Yay

    Good mornign all,

Just wanted to say thanks to all the advice on the forum.

Two days ago, I ordered the M15X.

    Configuration, Intel i7-620M, GTX260, 4 GB 1033 RAM, 1900x1080WLED, 350 GB HD, etc.

I was ready to place the order on line when I saw a post about calling them up for discounts. As I work for a federal agency, I thought I may be eligible, so I called them up and sure enough, I was eligible for a discount and they through in expedited shipping as well, as I told the sales rep I needed it pretty quickly as I use it for work and teaching classes out in the field. I think total savings came out to be 220 bucks or so, not bad and put it in the price range of other systems I was looking at (ASUS, Sager, HP, etc).

This is actually my second Alienware system. My first AW is a desktop machine that I ordered about two years ago and is still running strong (only thing I have done with that system is upgrade it from Vista to Win7 64 bit).

This is a great forum and message thread and will continue reading it when time allows (there are over 126 pages in this thread alone!).

Thanks again to everyones posts and advice. It's nice to do enough reading where I didn't have to ask any questions, and you all didn't have to answer the same questions over and over again.

Estimate for receipt of the system is May 17th, but the system is already in production, so I think a week or so it should be on it's way. I was talking to the sales rep and he was based in Nashville (I used to live near their facility so we were doing some talking). He said the parts come in to Nashville from Malaysia and the assembly of my AW was going to happen in Nashville as well and will ship out from there. Usually shipping from Nashville to DC is only two days via FedEx even for 7 day ground shipping, so we'll see.

    Can't wait to get it!

    Thanks all!

I did the benchmark test from HWiNFO32:

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/49318386@N02/?saved=1

I have no idea what the numbers mean or if the results are good or suck. Could someone please explain them to me?

The test was done with standard configuration (out of the box). Please remember that I have the 240 card.

Thanks a lot in advance for any feedback!

I feel that sometimes it's a little dim. At least my screen is lol.

Anyone have suggestions for a good sleeve for the M15x with the 9cell? I got my Orion backpack today but I want some extra protection. I might just use the sleeve it comes in if I can't find one.

yeah the M15x screen is super brite most of the time i use it at 3/4 brightness. i saw the comparison between the M11x screen and the sony zand the M11x is way dull and dim compared the the sony. im not a sony fanboy just stating what i saw, lol.

also the sleeve they gave you is pretty good plus its FREEEE. i've been using it when i put it in my backpack. still no scratches.

yeah waiting is the hard part. but way worth it when you open up the box for the first time. also we don't hate the M11x here, we love all things alienware. was considering one myself, but didn't really need another gaming rig. so i'm waiting for the hp slate, hope its as cool as it looks.

sleey0 what do you recommend to use with the 5870, thermal pads or thermal paste or combo?

I'd go paste all the way. If the ram can come in contact with the heatsink then use high quality pads with those. Chips itself I'd go with thermal paste for sure.

    Inappropriate

I think you are confusing yourself regarding TIM's and applying thermal pads.

You always have to use a TIM (such as MX-3 or OCZ Freeze to name a couple) on the GPU die to make contact with the heatsink. Never use a thermal pad unless the heatsink was designed for it (some laptops have heatsinks that are too far apart for a paste and either need a shim made for it or you can use thermal pads but it isn't recommended and a shim is usually a better solution).

The thermal pads are for the other components on the board, such as the memory, etc.

If you go ahead and take out the gpu in your notebook, you will see where the pads were placed and it will make more sense to you once you see for yourself ;)

Ha ha ha! Don't criticize my card man! I'm the one that helped you! :D :D :D
Don't worry about it man, I don't even need a graphics card (that I am aware of anyway). Could you please explain those numbers to me? I would really appreciate it, because I have no idea what they mean. How could I make those numbers better?
I'll rep you for it (thanks for the rep´, BTW, Inappropriate. too. I saw them in my control panel although I haven't received them yet).
When are you getting your 5870?
