That's a good thread to start with, his is mainly about flashing the gpu though and isn't quite as extensive on manually overclocking your gpu. Your core clock is always going to give you more of a performance increase per mhz than the VRAM is on these cards.
1-Start at stock and increase just the core by say 10-25mhz then stress test to make sure it's stable.
2- Increase the core clock again and stress test it again until you start seeing artifacts or get a crash, as soon as that happens you know your max core clock your card will handle is the last stable one.
3-Do the same on the Vram clocks ^^^
4-Try both the max core and vram clock at the same time and stress test, once both are that way you can try to increase slowly again but it probably won't be any different.
Also keep in mind that at a certain point you're going to have to flash the VBios for higher voltages or it won't run.

yes that is a flashing guide if you want to change the voltage.
honestly for everyday gaming 750/1050 should be more then enough. i game at stock mostly. -
DaneGRClose Notebook Virtuoso
Shoot stock voltages and clocks for a 5870 are enough for gaming on everything I threw at it but Crysis and Metro 2033, both of those games are never going to max with this computer no matter what we do. As inap said 750-800/1050-1100 is a good medium where you get great performance and great temps.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Yes, J-Star's guide is an excellent tutorial on how to do it, but you need to differentiate between benchmarking and gaming. The high overclocks you see around here are strictly for benching. You don't need those high clocks -- they over-stress the card and generally yield little actual benefit in measured fps. With a 5850 (or 5870), 750/1050 or 800/1075 is as high as you need to go for gaming or general use. I use 750/1050/1.10v mostly. The higher voltage lets me overclock further when needed with AMD Clock Tool without reflashing for voltage. You experience may vary. Just test.
-
I completed the flash with the following settings which was stable and didn't notice any issues.
750/1050 @ 1.10V
So how is the benchmark attach?Attached Files:

(EDIT) Reverted back to stock GPU and it went away. so what gives? 750/1050 @ 1.10V shouldn't be that bad right? -
Ok, out of the box 1 day old M15x with i7-840 8gb ram, and gtx460m..... Definitely an upgrade from my asus g51, but not the score i was expecting (by just a little
) Can't wait to overclock it a bit, every review ive read about the card says its got a ton of headroom to overclock.... Hopefully I can get the score up!

Got my m15x (cpu 620m gpu 460m) up and running, installed 3dmark vantage trial and the default resolution of 1280x1024 isnt supported so it chooses the native resolution of 1600x900. Also after completing the benchmark it complains about physics test being processed by physX on the GPU, will turn this off and run the test again however i dont know what we can do about comparisions now as resolution is different.
Oh yea played a bit of BFBC2 and medium to high default settings at native res works great, no slow down, played some starcraft2 at medium settings and again no slow down, perfect so far, gonna try GTA4, although im assuming this will not fair so well, i'll report back later. -
Gonna have to add 3D mark 2011 scores as i think us 460m owners cant get vantage to run becasue of driver issue and the resolution on our 1600x900 screens dont support the default 1280x1024.
Anyhow also posted this in the other 3dmark2011 benchmark thread, but i'll add here as well.
Core@701 and shader@1402 and everything is still too cool, temps are still around 60c and i'm in a heated room.

I'm not even pushing the 460m, it stays too cool! I'm currently at room temperature just so ya know im not in the fridge!
Could push core to over 800+ easily, shaders linked to that would be at 1600+, memory deserves to go upAttached Files:

Scores are looking good so far guys! Now we just need someone to grab the cajones and really push their 460m to it's absolute limit like Inap and I did with the 5850. I have had a crazy couple weeks so sorry no updates yet, update should be coming soon!
-
Oh and like I posted before, 3DVantage doesnt complete its test due to driver issue and screen resoution support, i'm not fussed enough to get this benchmark working though, the drivers are early but seem to very stable, not one crash in the many games i played so far, including gta4, which would crash on my desktop rig.
I may overclock some more later, depends how much gaming gets done -
By the way, you guys should try the 265.66 drivers from Asus. I think they're the best ones for the 460m right now. Laptopvideo2go should have the modified inf to get it to work on non-Asus laptops. -
My guess is because currently the top 3dmark11 460m score belongs to an Asus he's thinkin we are inferior. We'll see, we'll see. Very tempted by a 460m and if i get one, we'll see whose all powerful now.
To be continued... -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
What is the top 460M score in 3dMark11?
-
Think I saw somewhere someone got over 2k on graphics and a bit higher overall. Still though I may just get me one of these. Bit bummed about the 470m though cause that card would break 3k fo sho!
-
I need to OC my CPU to get better scores. I tried earlier to push the 460m to a 825mhz core with linked shaders clock, sad to say the drivers crashed. I need to pump up the volts i recon, anyone know how to do this?
Only overclocking i've done before is on my old rig where i had a q6600 @3.4ghz, stable with mild voltage increase, it was all easily done through the bios, as expected i noticed we dont have the bios options on these laptops. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Looks like all the top 3dM11 scores for the 460M are held by Clevos (x7200, 8760, 8690). The highest Asus score I saw was 2128, way behind the 5850's in the M15x. Be interesting to see how the 460M's perform in the M15x in the hands of a few benchers. Surprised it hasn't done better so far.
-
Folks, lets leave the comparisons out of this thread (Asus vs Clevo vs. AW, etc.). Feel free to post in the Gaming/Graphic Card area of NBR if you want to compare.
This thread is for 15x benchmarks ONLY.
General reminder - no trolling or inflammatory comments. see forum rules. report any posts which violate the forum rules and a mod will see to it.
Thanks. -

-
Well 3dmark06 is very CPU skewed so the difference is there. Asus 460m's are slightly different in the manufacturing process as in they are made in Asus's proprietary format whereas Alienwares and Clevos are interchangable. Still the chip should be the same so it shouldn't matter.
-
Amazingly impressed with dell default drivers, not had one crash apart from where i push the core over 825mhz, and as there is no vcore increase the temps peak at 60c. Gonna have dig around the ati 5850/70 threads to see what temps they get.

Wow great job with the oc. And still a lot of thermal room to play with. Man guess you need the up the voltage in the card to break 2k. But I don't recommend it if your new to this kind of stuff.
-
One point is huge in 3dmark 11, hehehe
-
I had have more increases in score though. Updating from the 10.11 to 10.12 increased my points by 21 , From P1969 to P1990 at stock speeds.
-
Thanks spoonjaffa !!
Nice to see the 460m is overclockable -
I think that the true potential of these gtx 460m is still hidden. I just want to see the new drivers that are not beta.
-
Anyone tried these drivers yet?
v265.90 Windows 7/Vista 64bit | Quadro Desktop - LaptopVideo2Go Forums
Because they rock! I'm only on a 260m but they drastically remove load times. GTA 4 used to take around a minute now takes 15 secs. Dunno how they did it because I thought it was all up to the hard drive. Be sure to do a clean install and use the modded inf. As usual brightness won't work but the performance increase is great! And they are overclockable. I have no doubt that these can squeeze some juice out of the new cards! -
come on!!! where are all the 460m owners??? lets do this guys, all the 460m slots are open.

hahah can't wait to see these benches. wanna see what the 460m can really do.

I have my beast on Monday, its in Köln, Germany now
Merry Christmas -
Hey I already done my oc benchmarks, I'm too busy enjoying gaming on it and I'm not in any hurry to cause any instability issues, will no doubt get around to updating drivers soon.
And where is my rep power points for being the first to find the limit for the 460m gpu? Hint hintwell core and shader link limit.
-
Just rep you again, really would like to see some vantage numbers, stock and oc'ed,pretty please.
More 460m benches please people. -
Yea come on people get thouse bechmarks in. I know its not as fast as the 5850's yet but early days. I think like many other 460m users that default/free vantage benchmark doesn't work
-
that was after I tried to install a new driver.... Anyone know the best driver for the 460m?
-
Ran the new 3DMark 11 thing
Got these scores: Result
What do you think. -
wow i think that could be one of the best 720/5850 runs. nice!!!!
-
Thanks!
Whats wierd is that Im getting way lower temperatures now than what I used too.
According to the AMD clock tool, The highest temp was 77.5C.
