it's hard to say, it could be either or both. i get that all the time when benching.

instability dude... its not a driver issue... it's the card giving out.

artifacts are only one way a card shows its limit.

If this happened at normal stock clocks, i'd say yea maybe a driver issue... but at over 300 mhz over stock... yea its the card :) lol

Strange thing though Jstar, 10.8 gave out at about 970/1170 if I remember right, 10.9 gave out just slightly higher, and 10.10 seems to be giving out anything past my last run of 1015/1200. That's why I'm wondering if it's a driver issue, why would different drivers allow the same card to go higher without bouncing if it was the card? I don't know, I may not be able to grab that record back, we'll see.

I agree with Inap, it can be either. Plus you get different interactions between particular apps and drivers. For example, I routinely get crashes in 3dMark06 at clock settings that work fine for Vantage -- same card, same clocks, same driver. Works for Vantage, crashes in 3d06.

^^^ I'm not saying you or inap is wrong rev... don't get me wrong. Drivers DO play a HUGE ROLE in benching... and in everything really...

i just think if your pushing 1000+ on the core clocks, i'm pretty sure i'd consider those solid drivers... heck anything over 950 is REALLY GOOD... They weren't exactly intended for those kind of clocks... and i think its more of a hardware limitation than a software limitation at that point... but wtv its just what i think... as i'm no computer hardware engineer ...

And Dane... Here's a tip. I got that score on 10.6.... 10.8 was the next best...10.10 allowed me to push clocks really high, but got lower scores than the other drivers at slightly lower clocks...

Drivers for sure influence benching capabilities and stability... but at 1015? like i said.. i'd think its more a hardware limitation... or okay fine... both :) loll

Nice sig Jstar! ;) Thanks for the tip I'll have to try it out, for some reason I could never get 10.6 to work on my rig, the driver for some reason wouldn't fully install, 10.6 CCC installed just fine but the driver wouldn't take. 10.8 seemed solid, the 10.9 was ok at best, and 10.10 seemed to let me send the clocks through the roof. It's probably going to be the weekend before I get to bench again but I'll give it a shot. If I can't get anything to go a bit higher without too much effort though you're probably going to keep the record. I thought about it and roasting this good of a card isn't worth an extra 50 points when I've taken out so many other amazing cards along the way already. We'll see!

hahaha faiz, he got a nvidia 260m but the same can apply to it. for better oc, you will need better cooling, but there will always be a limit to the card, finding that limit is fun and filled with bsods and crashes, so enjoy, hahahhah

Thanks Dane. I have no idea what is considered good or normal or bad. I do know that so far, the 4core/8threads kicking into 1 turbo is next to impossible. Making me mad. At 60-70 percent utilization my cpu says it's at 49c, according to throttlestop. So i have no idea how to get it low enough to engage the 1 turbo. On the bright side, when compared to the I3-350 I got anywhere from 10-18 extra FPS on BFBC2. I compared my average fps to the old one at exact same settings and it was a big difference. So.. I am good with that. Best Wishes, StevenX

yike been awfully busy the last week, no chance to bench and sold off the hyperX for incredibly cheap, hahhahah

man i think all the previous benching has cause some glitchyiness to my windows install. looks like i'm gonna have to reformat again. hahaha

on a side note thinking of using another hdd or ssd just for benching, what do you guys think????

I won't be benching my M15x anymore! Ohwell so sad! I read from the M17x thread though, that VANTAGE LOVES 10.10 and scores like 100 minimum higher over 10.8 :) SO i think Dane should beat my score then...since i won't be benching it anymore :)

So does that mean you've decided to keep the m17x and send the m15x back then Jstar?

I got my 10451 run with 10.10 modded beta drivers so we'll see if there is a difference between the two when I get a chance to run to run some benchies this weekend.

oh ok ! Actually i still haven't decided... LOLLL ... Both have their pros/cons...

Things i don't like about the M17x? Well for the amount of noise the fans make (one fan mind you), i wasn't impressed with the cooling, as the temps are higher than on my M15x.... Now i've read that the retention mod n repasting can lower temps by 10-20*C... so i guess this is less of an issue than i thought... but initially...was very disappointing.

Also, like i said, yes its true what they say, the fans get VERY loud when gaming compared to the M15x... and hey im half deaf lol!!

But besides those two things... theres nothing i don't like... But portability and size is something still holding me back... as i always found 17' laptops too big in general... and the M17x...well.. is a monster lol. I don't know i guess i'll spend a couple more days with it :)

sooo i did some testing guys, my card cant go past 1050 memory however it can operate in very low voltage

    View attachment GPU-Z Sensor Log1.0v.txt

this is all done at 1.0 volt, which i believe is good since i dont want heat in my system. the core clock i might go up a little more just to bench but i think 825 is a good stop.

the test was done with furmark, and maxing out at 85C will do some real testing with starcraft 2 and battlefield to see how much improvement

Depends somewhat on the card of course, but 750/1050 is a popular compromise between performance and heat/power requirements and has worked well for me. Some prefer 800/1075, which also works well, but is probably the ceiling for sustained, all-around use. Obviously, anything below those settings should work fine.
