Does just fine, i.e., decent speed (P10,000+ in Vantage), great look and feel, reasonably low temps, doesn't throttle (as that term is commonly used here), gorgeous screen, very easy to live with. You'll have a ball with it. Stealth mode is no longer an issue, thanks to Wattos' Stealth Mode Indicator program.

hey wattos, got an idea. do you think making another thread all about problems and confirmed fixes. that way we can have a single thread, making easier to search through.

how about we actually do a wiki about the M15x ? Then everyone can contribute without having 1 person to maintain it? We could also keep the Bios files posted there

    nice!

Feel free to add the guide to the wiki and then we can simply link it from the OP. It has become very troublesome to edit the OP because its quite large.

Ill try to make pics of the 260M and the 5870 today ;)

My laptop came with 8.683.2.0, driver date 17/12/2009 for the 5850 o_O

BTW I can't seem to do those steps for the 10.7 driver? Why do I have to download their crappy suite? I'm terrible at updating drivers rofl.

Could somebody spoon feed me instructions?

This forum and all the information has been incredible, thank you all so much! I just received an Alienware M11x R2 -> i7 640um, 1GB GT 335M, 4GB DDR3 800, 500GB 7200rpm but it's smaller than I expected and the color is sort of washed out (it came with the auo105c) so I'm thinking about the 15x instead. Has anyone had both for comparison? The thread about 11x vs 15x has been idle since March and there have been a lot of updates. I'm planning to use the laptop for Second Life and other 3D virtual worlds (definitely need Nvidia vs. ATI) and for travel/presentations. The weight of the 15x sounds intimidating but the 11x is so tiny I don't think anyone will be able to see it. I'd appreciate any advice.

The M15X isn't as heavy as people say, I don't work out at all and am really thin, I found it a perfectly reasonable weight. It's a lot easier to move around than my Dell Inspiron 1720.

M15X isn't that heavy but its huge.. its more like an 17" Asus with a smaller screen :D

I'm going to convert the topics here to wiki articles. I'll need some help definitly lol.. This isn't my own wiki, I just happen to register it first lol.. Anyways, should I open a topic where we can discuss on changes about wikis style, template boxes, standarts etc..? Otherwise everybody will start to add articles with their own writing style, and instead of a "M15X Alienpedia", it will become an "M15X Sandbox" :D

EDIT: Hmm got to coin that term "Alienpedia" :D

the m15x is very light actually...i had one for like 30 min til i had to give it for another car...and the m11x is a really tiny i would go m15x if you dont mind how bulky it is...but if you are a man and or women it wont be a problem so people should stop **** about how heavy it is..its not your just a wimp and very lazy..so nymicheal go for the m15x...585o not 260m (the fourum says so)

I second that, would also go for the M15x. It is a heavy notebook, I suffer a little lugging it around with me through airports and cities. The 9 cell battery is a must have and adds a bit of weight. The weight issue leaves my thoughts when in use.

agreed, the only laptops that are comparable are 17" from other brands. i don't mind the weight if the performance is good.

    I love it.
Especially when I picked it up as a second for AU$599.00. Failed video test on Pre Boot Assesment, however A07 BIOS fixed this issue. Have tested many times and passes with flying colors. Very happy indeed!

you want a heavy laptop, try the mac portable from 1989... that thing weighed around 16 lbs.

but yeah for todays standards i guess it's heavy, but not if comparing it to other "desktop replacement" laptops.

    1. Download your ATI drivers from Dells site (make sure you have win 7 selected and not vista)... Save it to your desktop.
    2. Download Driversweeper... Remove ALL ati drivers and run CCleaner
    3. Reboot.
    4. Install your ati drivers that you downloaded and reboot.
    5. Run CCleaner again.
    6. Reboot.

This is how I always do my video drivers. Theres probably 1 too many reboots in there, but i've had ZERO issues with that method ^_^

Yeah I updated mine a couple of days ago - when i realised that YouTube videos made my card reset :p

But i downloaded my drivers from the offical ATI site as i couldnt see them on the Dell page - was i being blind or are they not on Dells driver page?

Any reason to renew the BIOS by the way? I've not checked what version I've got because everything seems to be working...

when it comes to bios updates, there is only 1 rule...
    don't fix what ain't broke!

that being said, the throttling and touchpad issues have still yet to be resolved so no point yet.

    Shutdown the system -

    1. Disconnect AC power cable from system
    2. Remove battery pack
    3. Depress and hold power button for a 20 count
    4. Reconnect AC and battery and power the system

Although, your problem is probably with the Synaptics driver setting (if you have an external plugged in). Open the mouse control panel and on the synaptics tab, be sure the 'disable touchpad when external mouse is plugged in' is not checked.

The mouse pad wouldn't light up when I first got it because I had a mouse plugged in, this was because the mouse pad driver was turning it off.

Uninstalling the Symnatec drivers should make Windows automatically install its default drivers.

Use the DP->HDMI dongle (which should have come with your M15x) and connect the tv with a HDMI cable.

The other way is gto use a VGA cable, but the quality of this connectin can be worse and the vga cable does not carry sound

Works perfectly! I can't believe I didn't know that cable came with the machine lol, I guess I was way too excited unboxing I just looked at it like "wat" and put it back in the box lmao.

edit: Is there a way I can watch Bluray discs using my TV via my M15X? That'd be sweet :). When I try the colours go all purple and green.

By the way thanks so much for your stealth indicator, the first thing I did when I got my M15X was add that to the startup so I don't have to worry about stealth mode at all!

When you have a blu ray drive there should not be a problem as long as you TV is HDCP compatible (which only very very very very old flat screens dont support)

This I dont understand. Could you maybe rephrase?

Well I was watching Apocalypto (Bluray disc) and some of the colours would go an acidic green, and the others purple. It looked similar to being inverted. When I minimized the film the rest of the screen was fine, just the video being played would look "inverted".

I hope that clears it up, if not I can try and grab a picture.

oh, sounds like a decoding issue. Which application did you use to play the blu ray movie? Do you get the same problem when watching on you LCD panel?

If yes, then it might be an application problem, try using a different app.

It might also be a driver issue. Try changing to a different driver and see if that helps
