It was only on the TV, on the screen it plays fine. I have to use Cyberlink PowerDVD 8 because I can't find any other software that plays Bluray discs. I'm not too bothered, everything else works perfectly :).

is it only the movies? or websites etc as well

i had an old geforce2 ultra that would have color problems cause of the cable not being align'd in the socket or whatever, I had to put a light weight on top of the VGA socket behind the computer

Just to be clear, I need to uninstall the standard driver, run CCleaner, and then install the modified ATI driver from the thread linked in the OP?

To re-install your 5850 drivers it is recommended to uninstall your current driver, run CCleaner, reboot, then install the Dell drivers (or ATI if you wish).

I use the Dell drivers, it's about preference unless someone with a bit more knowledge on those certain drivers can clarify this.

edit: I know there's a sticky about coolers, but in your experience what is the best cooler for the M15X compared to the price?

How can I check the detail of my Samsung SSD? E.g. if TRIM is enabled or not etc etc...

Also I cannot remember the shortcut for turning off the battery when you are running with the AC still in...please tell me :)

I'm a new Win7person so please forgive these nooby q's.

Edit: oh and another thing : where is the "run" command thing?

    Thanks!

thanks! Its slightly annoying that the only message is "enabled" even if you disable it - anyway to know if its definitely enabled/disabled? The system tray just says battery at 100%...

I knew that this was the case with stealthmode - hope its not the case for everything :p

Edit: If it says "TRIM" in the "Supported Features" section, does that mean TRIM has already been enabled/ or just that TRIM is supported and I have to update the drive to enable it!

    Thanks again!

I have this one, and it's lightweight, has two fans, and cools pretty well. My gf bought it for me cuz she was tired of the piece of wood I wud put my m15x on while in bed lol... I have to admit it's a little pricey though, but I'm happy with it.

A new update to the login background.
This is the permanent solution to keep the login Alienware background as I found out that by not doing this, every time you change back to windows theme, the value of OEMBackgound will reset to 0.
    Instead of changing:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background\OEMBackground

Instead, Use the following Policy key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System\UseOEMBackground

Alternatively, just copy the following into a text file, rename the file with a .reg extension and double click it:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System]
    "UseOEMBackground"=dword:00000001

This is probably a stupid question, but I'm trying to uninstall my old drivers and I don't see "ATI Display Driver/Utility." In fact, all I see it "ATI Catalyst Install Manager."

Is that what I need to uninstall? >_>

1 - hit it again, i.e., it toggles, so one key press combo = enable; two = disable and will be reflected onscreen.

2 - Yes, if CrystallDiskInfo shows that TRIM is supported, then it is active and able to receive TRIM commands from Win7 if the controller driver is TRIM pass-through capable. The default Win7 driver is.

initial impression is a08 fixed the throttle issue.
would recommend nvidia drivers from dell on the website.

however you are aware that the 5850 is better in games right?
yes i agree with you the ati is a pain to install... serously amd/ati should take some lessons from nvidia in the driver department.

The 5850 outperforms the GTX 260m by about 30%, has GDDR5 instead of the GDDR3 memory the 260m uses, and supports DX11 while the gtx 260m only has DX10. Also its 100$ cheaper.

Wouldn't make any sense for you to pick the nvidia over the ati... unless you actually WANT TO pay more for a crappier gpu :D lol

and i don't know where all this talk about ati drivers being hard to install came from, but it just as easy as installiing the nvidia drivers, or any other drivers for that matter. I uninstall my old ones, reboot, and install the news ones off ati....

Unless someone is completely technologicallly handicapped, i don't see how it's nearly a problem??? besides, you have to follow those steps for any driver you install anyways...

    Don't make a mistake you'll long regret...and get the 5850m.

Nvidia just released the A08 bios, that *seems* to stop the year-old throttling/stuttering problems users had with the 260m, but it's too early to tell if it solves it 100%.... but it would seem that it definately makes an enormous improvement and prevents the system from throttling during synthetic tests...i think i remeber forum member tuenkamen saying it still throttled for him during one particular test though...

you only mod drivers released by ati and not by dell. Dell has beta drivers that are premodded and ready for you to install on their website. If you want the bleeding edge then you will have to do the manual workaround for the ati drivers to install which takes like 2 extra minutes. Ati makes the drivers and releases it to Dell. They then test it and once it is ready mod the drivers for the alienware series. Ati makes beta releases all the time but to try those you will need to mod not stock drivers that dell releases. The drivers are a cake to install and it is not like you are installing drivers daily but you will be gaming daily and the difference between the ati and nvidia card is easily noticeable not only in FPS but in $$$.

my hive? isn't that for the older area 51 models.

your drivers should be taken from here:

    Drivers & Downloads

make sure to select win 7.

or go to ati site and download the newest mobility driver, 10.8

Yes myHive is only for the Area-51 m15x/m17x and prior. Basically prior to full Dell takeover, so ibraveheart either you have the older model and should be looking in the Area-51 Legacy section of the Alienware forum, or you're looking in the wrong place for drivers.

My M15X should be arriving this week! Referring to the first post, is there any need to uninstall the mousepad driver now that A08 is out or should I just update the bios as I think it fixes that issue? Thanks for the thread, I'll be sure to check back here hopefully on Wednesday.

Update to A08, if your mousepad disables when you plug in an external mouse (like my did) which causes the lights around the mousepad to turn off, then uninstall the driver and Windows will install its own one. A08 fixes the touchpad issue though, and it's a huge improvement :).

Your laptop may already have A08, mine had A07 even though it had only been out for a little while.

you can also stop your mouse from disabling in the synaptics settings, its a tickbox. no need to uninstall just for that.

My M15x should be arriving within the next day or two!

I'm not sure if the new bios (I say, like I have anything more than the vaguest understanding of what this mens) will be installed, but in either case since it fixes the touchpad, I guess I don't need to do anything about that? Also looking upthread a bit I'd definitely want my touch pad to disable itself when I had a mouse plugged in, but I guess this is personal preference.

I've seen people on this forum variously recommend using drivers from the AMD or Dell site (my card will be the 5850) and it seems that various people have posted varying and different experiences with each. Any particular reason why this post points to the AMD site over the Dell site for their versions of the amd drivers? Or will my drivers be up to date anyway since I'm getting this brand new within the next few days?

I think I need to turn PowerPlay on in the CCC to get decent performance out of my card, is this correct, or was it the opposite in fact? ;)

Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials are both only antivirus programs and not firewalls too, right? I'm not too bothered about having a firewall since I'm sitting behind a university network, but even so I'd like to know for sure :) I've had Norton 360 before which is both but increasingly it seems like norton and co are just running a protection racket so I'm kinda saying screw that and looking at the free options. Is there any especial reason why you recommended these two over, for instance Ad-Aware or some other free option?

Also, I've had spybot S&D run on startup since time immemorial: any reason for me to not do this?

Finally I'd like to extend my thanks to everyone here at NBR who helped me chose this laptop and helped me with about a billion questions :)

    -Poobs
