Well mine has been shipped and states 2 days until arrival. I am hoping its here tomorrow!!
-
Ok so here's the latest info.
The Dell reps are apparently having a problem with their system tools when they try to order the part # associated with the 5850. There are 3 (that I know of) part numbers and each one will return as either failed or cancelled because the part that is linked to the number has not yet been released for distribution on the system.
So the engineering team has to figure out what its doing with those parts or issue a working number. And that is where I sit at the moment since at least last friday. They are waiting on a response from their contacts and I am waiting on a response from them. -
My order status was just updated with a tracking number. It is being shipped from Tennessee and I'm in Saskatchewan. It's going to be at least five days, unfortunately.
Hopefully one of the other guys will get theirs soon. I can't wait to see what the card can do. -

The last attempt that I thought worked turned out to be a newly shipped GTX 260M and a 1GB DDR3 240pin Memory Module .
So, I'm still waiting. I had even asked Bill to take a look at the situation and when he gets around to checking the forums he might have an answer for me. -
RAHHHHHHHHHHHHH Dell - Australia now has the 5730 as its upgrade. LAME http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/484622-m15x-5730-what-earth.html#post6260500

Mine is coming TODAY.
I'm getting it at work, which means I can't look at it until I get home at 9 pm. -
nice can't wait to see some benches
-
Here in France some rep on the phone apparently made it clear that the 5850 is ddr5 for the US and ddr3 here. I guess they thought the French are losers without real money to spend + living in a socialist country (the latter of which is actually true), so let's provide them with some outdated crap like it was no big deal and make $$ out of these f*ckers. Rofl. I guess that's goodbye Dell for me.
-
We'll see whether that statement is true, should be getting mine in a few days -
DELLChrisM Company Representative
The rep is incorrect. They are all GDDR5.
-
I hate having to wait for even just an update for the status of my card. Patience is not one of my virtues :S
-
Well Chris no offense meant, I'm all willing to believe you but I'll definitely be on the safe side and wait until skynet1988 or other european customers get their babies and confirm then.
-
Good lord, this thing is a MONSTER. Should be fun toting this and my 17" Macbook Pro on my photography trip next week. Yikes.
As for benchmarks, I'll let someone else do that, since I don't have 3DMark (really, you have to pay for it?).
I haven't checked what kind of RAM since I'm still at work. Do you go to the ATI Control Panel or what? I checked the Device Manager, but nothing. -
so you receive it already?

^^^ looking forward to hearing from you later on.
mind posting your build specs so we know what were looking at for benches? -
-
So guys, I've been trying my rep, and this is what I have him down to.
$1,998 after taxes. This is in Canadian dollars. The specs are as follows:
M15x
i7 720
500 gb
5850
6 GB DDR3 1333 (since its a special offer I dont have the option of going down to 4 GB)
900p screen
2 years advanced warranty.
What do you guys think, is this worth it? Keep in mind this is through Dell.ca, so US deals are considerably better. -
The memory is indeed GDDR5. Yay.

Could you take a picture of the heatsink setup on it (don't have to remove it just want to see it installed to compare with the 240m/260m setup).
Thanks and congrats! I see the core and memory run 625/1000, my 5870 runs 700/1000 so I don't see huge differences stock for stock (speed wise). -
My 3DMark Vantage result was 5266.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/2511/img0816t.jpg
My system is as is in the pic. i3, 6 gigs of RAM, 500 gig harddrive. I must have had the test on extreme since it falls in line with other results I saw on the net. The tests never got above 20 fps. It pushed it pretty damn hard, although the heat coming off the fans wasn't hot at all. My system was plugged in, BTW.
Going to bed now, can't answer more questions. -
The GPU score of 5096 suggests to me that you're having the same PCI Express issues that many GX640 owners have had. Many people with the GX640 have gone from ~5k to ~7k GPU score upon getting the PCI Express working at x16 instead of x1, which it would often go to on the default drivers.
I would recommend that you install the latest drivers, and set PowerPlay to Maximum Performance and/or turn it off altogether.
Be careful with the PowerPlay settings, since the automatic downclock to 100/1000 has almost universally caused problems for GX640 owners. If the 5850 in the M15x behaves in the same way, your laptop might have trouble waking from sleep or booting when at the lower clock speeds. For example, my GX640 fails to boot when PowerPlay is set to Maximum Battery Life. -
-
There's a lot of information that can be shared between GX640 owners and upcoming M15x w/ 5850 owners; we're brothers in arms, after all
It's possible that the M15x doesn't have many of these issues the GX640 does, but I think a lot of it has to do with ATI's drivers for the card and so these things definitely need testing. Your Vantage result definitely suggests that the GPU performance isn't quite up to scratch.
Congratulations on saving a nice wad of cash with the Core i3, by the way. -
How does one go about getting one of these 5850 cards? Surely you don't need to buy a m15x from dell to get one right?
-
Laptop cards are much harder to get your hands on than desktop cards, though.
-
K I'm confused, everyone keep saiding that the 5850 GDDR5 is only 75mhz different from the 5870 and the performance won't be that much different. Base of EI vantage score which is ~5000 and 5870 stock are ~7800. That a ~2800 different. That is a big different.
-
As I said before, I think the M15x is having the same issue as the MSI GX640 with PCI Express running at 1x with stock drivers.
The 5850 GDDR5 should get around 7.1k for the Vantage GPU score with stock clocks of 625/1000; that's what people (myself included) have gotten on the GX640. -
Speaking of upgrading my drivers, AW doesn't have the drivers for the 5850 yet. I'm wary of getting them somewhere else besides AW. ATI? They have drivers from 11-2009. Right ones?

I don't think so. Those are just links to the manufacturers' sites.
I'd say that Mobility Catalyst 10.4 from here is probably your best choice; that or 10.3. -
Gratz on getting the card. As far as i'm concerned your the first!, Hopefully the new drivers will fix your issue and we'll see the real cards score.
-
-
So, somewhat good news (at least until it turns out to be false). The rep dealing with my exchange let me know that the team dealing with the 5850 has apparently fixed the problem. So i should see my card tomorrow.
-
Lol, appears the fix was only implemented for US customers, trying to get CDN updated as well.

here's hoping you get it soon. id love to see some comparisons and the more people that have the card, the better info we'll have on the numbers.
-
At least Chris @ Dell was telling the truth, I have a lot more faith in the reps on the forum now.
And btw, here is a link to the notebookcheck review of the GX640 with the 5850 card, and it has all the benchmarks. http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GX640-i5447LW7P-Notebook.30776.0.html
As lackofcheese said, its likely the same issue with the PCI x1 as with the GX640. The simplest solution is to install ATI 10.4 drivers, go to powerplay and disable it. Everything is fixed, and the only problem is that the laptop will not downclock the card on battery as powerplay would. -
I just got off the phone with Purolator. My M15x will be here tomorrow.
Specs are in my signature, I'll be running some benchmarks. I will also get a shot of the heatsink for those of you who wish to see it. -

Well received my M15x.. Yes the 5850 is GDDR5!!
Love the system!! Still had to uninstall the touchpad driver and use the windows version to smooth it out. Otherwise the AW is a sweet sweet system. -
congrats on the new system, do you mind taking some photos of the heatsink for the new card. thanks
-
-
hahaha its sad indeed. still doesn't hurt to asking.
-
Received my M15x. 5850 has GDDR5.
-
Now for you to do some benchmarking!
*and possibly a pic for Innap! -
Awesome guys. I have not had time to buy this system yet but I am going to do so probably tonight. Please post benchmarks with updated drivers and such. Congratulations to the ones who got it already and good luck to those who will like me.
-
I'm surprised that we've only seen 1 benchmark so far from all the new owners and the one benchmark we do have was gimped.
-
I'm anxiously awaiting mine. I took the day off work so I could sign for it (Also, so I wouldn't have to wait to get off to play with it ). I live alone, so I don't have anyone to sign for me. Rest assured, I will be posting some benchmarks as soon as I can.
M15x now with the 5850!
