he had a 5870 and sold that off since his 5850 was under warranty and it was overclocking as high as the 5870...no point keeping a 5870 when the 5850 is just as good and covered under his 4 yr CC warranty.

i had two 5870's and two 5850's, other then the different stock clocks there is pretty much no difference between the two. actually my 5850 can oc higher then my 5870. i've push both cards to the limits and both are about the same.

just look at the benchmark thread and you will see the top score is actually a 5850.

The theory most of us have is that the 5850 and 5870 are the same card, just two different levels of stability on stress testing from the factory. Some cards though are able to do beyond what you would think, the 5850 in my rig has beat out even the OC'd 5870's in the bench thread. Check it out in my sig, don't always judge a book by it's cover ;)

And Jstar I'm still waiting! :D

Should be fun... now if only i didn't have to endure 6 hours of school first...

Shoot I'd take 6 hours of school over the 8-10 hours of work I have to go through! :S I'm hoping you give me a run for my money and take the score so I have a reason to bench my rig again! Funny part is I don't have the lead by much but until someone does even just 1 point better there's no reason for me to push it further and risk it lol. I expect some good stuff out of you tomorrow! :D ;)

    P.S. When's the ETA for your m17x?

In university it's simple. Your payin outta ur arse to register for classes. If you don't show up, your only throwing your own money out the window. And the profs don't give a BLEEP about you... One of my profs told us to not come to class so he has less papers to correct lol.

My strategy? You need an "anchor" I like to call them, in each class, which is someone reliable who you know will go to each class and take quality notes. Once you have that, you can skip the useless lectures and just ask the anchor what happened, and photocopy notes lol.

But it's best not to skip (obv). I Learnd the hard way in college, and skipped weeks at a time lol... But let's not go into that...

I skipped too much freshman year.....after hurting my gpa for the rest of college I got my but into gear....I recommend going to the classes even if they are boring (they are only an hour long)

At least that was my experience with an engineering degree

Installed the 5870m mod with stock thermal pads + Cooler master thermal fusion 400. Idle GPU temp is around 56-60 celcius. =/ Ordered more thermal pads to play around, hopefully will lower my temp.

@Jstarnino: Where have you bought your dell mobility 5870 graphics card? Will the sound works over the DisplayPort? Dell does not want to sell to me a 5870 for my M15x.

I got an offer from Dell for a mobility 5850, but they said that the graphic card has only GDDR3 VRAM, because the M15x System will not support GDDR5?!?

Take the 5850 if they offered it, same hardware as 5870 just lower clocks (although it can overclock the exact same)

Ignore the gddr3/5 part - dell techs on the phone are generally not smart people.

Can i clock the 5850 without issues up to the 5870? Dell also offer a 460M GTX, but i'm not sure which one is better. But the surcharge of the 460M GTX is expensive.

You think they have the same performance (460m GTX and 260m GTX) and the mobility 5850 would be the better choice?

no, I know they have very different performance

Many people are waiting for the 400 series from nvidia to be made available by Alienware. The 5850 will outperform the GTX 260m. We do not yet know about the GTX 460m

I have just read a couple of tests about the graphics card (460M GTX). They said that the 460M GTX would be a bit faster as the mobility 5850. But slower as the mobility 5870. Just the Nvidia 470M GTX could messed up the moblity 5870.
But they also said that the nvidia 460M GTX operate only with a beta driver, at moment.

I dont know which graphics card shall I take now. What would be cleverer. :(

just have to wait and see, everything is just speculation atm. also with new cards come new problems. it always take a few months to work out the kinks anyways, i really dont' recommend jumping in right away.

for gaming the 5850 has been proven to be very solid so far.

Yea stick with the 5850m bro... as it outperforms the Nvidia at the moment. I know this because a friend at school has the new Asus 73jh-wtv the hell its called with the GTX 460m in it... and we've both played Medal of honor side by side this week on wednesday, and i can say that i was getting on average 5-7fps more than him on 1200p than he was on 1080p. Ok That was with my 5870m, but essentially they are the same card, and the 5850m from Dell can Easily overclock to 5870m stock clock speeds(700 on the core/1000 on the memory), and actually has reportedly reached over 950 on the core, heck even over 1000 (just ask danGRclose). So its safe to call DELL's ATI 5850m's just as powerful as their 5870m's.

I've read many sources confirming that as well, that the 5870m outperforms it by quite a bit... and Nvidia is "supposedly" waiting for some "magical" driver that they will be releasing that will propel it's performance beyond the 5870m... but i'll believe it when i see it... as i very much doubt this will happen since when ATI releases new drivers, most of the performance tweaks are geared towards their Newest cards or 5XXX series GPUs... So the 5850/5870m will be inching ahead as well...

Here's some real-time comparisons from a guy on XoticPc.... take a look:

    460M vs. 5870M - XOTICPC Forums

So would you pay MORE for a lesser card, that can potentially have problems since it is too new? Doesn't seem logical to me.

The only reason anyone should go for Nvidia, is if they need the CUDA cores and PHYSX support... or else i wouldn't even think twice for a second, and Just go with the 5850m.

To stay on topic - i dont know why these folks clamoring for the 460m just buy the 5850 and raise the clocks to the 5870 level. Problem solved correct? Has anyone ever disproved that the two cards are literally the same card with higher clocks? It would be really nice to have two m15x's or one m17x with a 5870 and a 5850 oc'd to see what the vantage numbers are? (I am talking same cpu, same driver level, same clocks, etc...) Best Wishes, StevenX

Just check the M15x benchmark thread part 2.

DanGRclose had the highest GPU Vantage score and he has a 5850m.

And Inap is right up there too, all with 5850's... so there you go.

dell's 5850 is killing everybody else 5870, like asus and clevo. wonder if it will be the same for the dell 460m.

I have to think the Dell/AW 460m will probably slaughter the Clevo/Sager and Asus 460m, but I still have to think that total picture performance it still won't catch the 5850.

You guys bring up a good point. Dell seems to have been getting things right with their revision/versions of gpus for the past while... if thats the case with the 460m, that would be awesome.

Honestly I like Nvidia, because it feels somewhat limiting not having phsyx n cuda cores with ATI, even though i'll rarely run an app that need 'em. But their prices do not make sense. They need to compete with ATI price wise. Sure they have the most powerful gpu out right now (480) but 2x5870s will be slightly over the price of 1x480 and demolish it in benches.... so like common.

I'm hoping Nvidia realizes this soon, or ATI starts adopting PhysX n their own form of CUDA cores or wtv....

I've read a couple of times about ATI adopting PhysX back in like 2008, but i don't understand it completely because i still don't see ATI cards using it, even though i've seen modded ATI drivers using PhysX... Anyone read the am estuff i read and know what the hell is the story with all that? Too me it still looks like its Nvidia only.

Have you raised voltages? and reflashed the card with new a new stock bios?

    Hi,
I just bought 5870m and installed it in my M15x. But I could not monitor the temperature in AMD GPU Tool. The Enabled column says "no" and there is no information display. I can still monitor the temp through GPU-z though. Any ideas ?

    Thanks

I use ThrottleStop both to help with CPU throttling (Turbo Boost specifically) and to monitor temperatures. If having the temperature listed in the system tray sounds useful (as well as minimum and maximum temperatures on hover) check it out.

I have no idea, I've never used AMD GPU Tool (I'll get it to check for you), and I have a Clevo card as well.

Edit: Nope, my Clevo card doesn't show temperatures in AMD GPU Tool either.
