    Hi,
    Thx guys.
I got another question about temperature
My 5870m is undervolted to 1.05v and temperature idles 200/300 at 49*c. After running Vantage at 700/1000, temperature peaks at 69*C. Is it ok ?

That's actually an amazing temperature. Mine stabilizes at 74 Celsius for gaming.

I would hit up StevenX he knows how to do a lot of that kind of stuff, he's very into gaming performance and modding .inf files for games.

Aight will do. I already scanned through all the .inf files in the game engine folder...and i didn't find anything DX related. Maybe i'm just looking in the wrong places...

Hope he knows what to do :)

I have a Clevo 5870 in my system and I was just wondering in a simple yes or no, can I connect to a external monitor with a DP to DP cable. I've looked all over the forums and can't seem to find the answer. Any comments will be appreciated.

    Thanks

Reason I say this is because I can't, I have no idea why. I have a Dell U2311. It's basically plugged from my M15X to the DP port on the monitor with a DP to DP cable. Nothing appears on the monitor though. I've tried starting with it plugged in, plugging when already on, rolling back drivers, quite a few things. The monitors reading because if it doesn't detect anything it says "no DP cable" but when I plug it in it says "going into power saver mode" which is when its plugged but theres no input coming to the monitor.

I have checked all the settings. How should I connect it? Plug it in and detect displays in CCC? or FN+F6?

It works if I plug via the DP to HMDI adapter and a HDMI to DVI cable to the DVI port on the monitor.

So strange. I would really like to know what the problem is now. Could it be the cable? It was brand new and as soon as I plug it in the state of the monitor changes so I don't think it is but it's a possibility. Or because I have a clevo card? I know audio doesn't work but has anyone actually got video signal with a DP to DP cable on a clevo 5870? Or what I've actually found out is that some of the Dell monitors have problems with Displayport connectivity which I think may be the problem but just trying to eliminate everything else first.

sorry if this bring life back into this old thread,

    but I have a question.

so I recently got a Nvidia 285m to replace my ati 5730m in my M15x. However, I have come across a problem.

The screwholes in the 285m's backplate/xplate are too small for my M15x's heatsink. Now, in this thread you advised to just remove the xplate from it but I feel a little hesitant to just apply physical force. I can't seem to find any tutorials on how to properly remove the xplate.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to this?

    edit:

So I just forced them out, was pretty easy.

However, I have come across a problem now. I tried installing the Nvidia 285m drivers for Win7 64(which I have) however, it says it couldn't find a compatible device so it failed the installation.

    Anyone have having ideas?

Are any of you getting system instability with 10.11+ ? I had 10.10, installed 10.11. Clean install of the drivers on a fresh windows install and everytime the screen turns off the system hard crashes. Installed 10.10 and it was fine. Clean install of 10.12 random system crashes without BSOD's.

Just wondering if anyone ever experienced anything like that? Temps are idling at 49C at 200/250.

Ezi0 have you tried to install the drivers through the inf file through device manager?

hey i just saw that this threat was bumped to the top, and I started reading it, but quit after about 20 pages. the thing that bothers me, is that people were saying it only works with the GTX260m heatsink for the stuff beyond the RAM, but I used the GT 240m heatsink and the dell thermal pad strips which are too short for the whole 5870 ram strip and doesnt even cover the stuff beyond the ram, so I had to stretch it with my hands, but I have my 5870 on 1.1v, 800/1100 and playing most games that i play (bfbc2, WoW, occasional crysis), the core gets to like 70C top, and the RAM gets to like 85C sometimes but usually steady around 80C. I have been planning on getting those thermal pads every1 says to use, but keep forgetting. Would buying a GTX 260m heatsink make much of a difference? If so, how much?
    thanks

i've found a dell 5870, but im not sure on the Bios version of the card.
i remember reading, that the card had to be a certain version to work on the M15x, and other versions will not work?

    can anyone confirm that?

i tried the search, but searching a large thread is a overwhelming

@madoon. I suggest starting a new thread as usually it is difficult to get good imput in a slightly unrelated thread. I am pretty sure any dell 5870 should work and have never heard of that, but then again mine is clevo and it works fine too, except about 2 or 3 disadvantages that I never notice.

You are correct, the last vbios version of dell gives artifacts (at least on my 5870). You need to run the stock vbios. The advantage is that you can go back to a previous vbios because you have something on the screen. So no worries, install the card and start your laptop. If you have the old stock vbios on it everything runs fine or else you need to downgrade it (you see it directly on the alienhead at boot, there is a downside: overheating may give the same effect, so be sure that the memory and gpu are correctly cooled with thermal pads).

I have put the original vbios somewhere on this forum but I'm now to lazy to search for it.

    thanks for your reply.
the seller doesnt know the version of the bios, but says he didnt upgrade it, and doesnt know if it had a newer version from dell.

so if it did come with a newer vbios, can i down grade from my M15x or will i need to use a M17x?

You can do it from your m15x, you just get artifacts on your screen but the command prompt is readable, just create a bootable usb stick (or diskette if you have an usb diskette drive). Put the flash file and flash tool on it and flash it.

They are sort of the gurus on 5870s in the M15x from what I recall

I have never had an M15x personally, just read alot here :D

Be a sport, save a copy of the vbios in your 5870m that is working properly and post it here for Madoon.

With Atiflash from a DOS boot: atiflash -s 0 5870bios.rom

If not comfortable with DOS/Atiflash, use GPU-Z to save a copy (click the camera icon to the right of the BIOS Version box).

Well, I'm going to revive this thread. I bought Ethanh's
M15x, the first one with the 5870 in it. I read some of this thread, but couldn't stand to read the whole thing, so I have a question. Does the Dell 5870 VBIOS work on a Clevo 5870 and does it make it so that you don't have to use the AMD GPU clock tool to change the clocks to 250/300? If so, anyone got a copy of said VBIOS? I know how to flash and what not.

There was an early MSI 5870m vbios that allowed PP and Overdrive on the Clevo 5870m's, but it was unstable and was used only for a short time by a few pioneers. No reliable method/alternate vbios was ever found to implement either function as of the time of introduction of the 5850m, which provided both and could be overclocked beyond the limits of most Clevo 5870m's. After that, the Clevo's lost favor.

If its your first time swapping the card on your machine, you can reuse the pads on your new card.

    * Make sure to place the pads correctly

Those temps are crazy. You might have to add more pads than just using the original and perhaps re-do the paste job on the GPU Proc. Highest I got on the 5870s were mid 80s

Too much paste is not good. Just see if the contact is good and make sure you go easy on the screws for the heatsink. See if the padding is still good for use. Else you might be better of replacing them.
