well I did that powerstrip thing, and I could display 1680x1050 but only at 30Hz and it looked like hammered garbage

Pretty frustrating....what monitor do you guy(s) use? I'm just going to get something else

Yeah I have the monitor driver installed. Still came up with weird resolutions

Did the same with the E207WFP, still came up with weird resolutions. Right now I'm using 1440x900 since it maintains the 1.6 ratio and comes out cleanest.

Sorry I couldn't help. If the monitor.inf file does not define the available resolutions and refresh rates, I don't know how else you do it.

yeah some of the settings might be wrong for that res, havn't used it in years (it's an old app back from the days of CRT and win98). problem is unless you can find the exact specs of the monitor and the correct settings for the 1680x1050 res, it will look strange... and mucking around with the settings without knowing what they do or their limits is playing with fire.

    Hi, inap

Since I'm looking for an upgrade to the GTX 260M, I contacted babyhemi about the 5870. He then redirected me to you here.

So is the 5850 and the 5870 truly identical except for the clock speed?

    Thanks in advance

    I'd get a Dell 5850m over a Clevo 5870m.

clock speed is the only thing different...and the clock speed can easily be OC'd to match the 5870m... and even surpass it by quite abit.

Also, Dell 5850's allow you to:

    1. Use audio over display port. this doesn't work on clevo cards.
    2. Powermizer works on Dell cards, so you won't have to manually down-clock the 5870m when on the desktop, it'll do it for you automatically.

And in general... the dell cards are more stable, OC better, and run cooler if i'm not mistaken :)

everything Jstarino said is true, your best bet is to buy the dell 5850. it's around $300ish, but comes with warranty and a tech will come by to install it for you also.

i have had both and the dell card out performs the clevo 5870 in almost every aspect.

yup, pretty much sums it up.
if you're overclocking or want sound over dp... go for the dell ver.

i can't break 900mhz core without increasing the voltage to dangerous levels (1.2v)

    whereas inap's reached what? 980?
    i'm green with envy!!!!! :p

oh there is one more thing, the clevo's run with pci-e 1.1 not 2.0... not an issue since its not bandwidth capped, however just a heads up.

actually its now 990 with the v2 bios @ 1.15v
    muhahahahahaha

but memory capped around 1150. and 985 seem to be my sweet spot for benching. 990 is hit or miss sometimes.

No risk as long as you are smart. Here is what you need to know:

    1. Do not leave the laptop off in the freezer, if it gets too cold it will not boot
    2. Turn the laptop off when you take it out of the freezer and leave it off for 5-6 hours to "defrost" since it will be cold and attract condensation (which kills stuff - my first ssd died this way). Need to let that evaporate off before it is safe
    3. Bench the bejeezus out of it!

Now that we have ThrottleStop the limiting factor for the i7 cpus is definitely the temps. Your GPU should like the cooler temperatures as well.

You will obviously need an external monitor and mouse and keyboard. I also recommend the use of a kill-a-watt for monitoring power use as this has helped me in benching. If you need help feel free to ask!

    For inspiration ;)

normally i just do a run or two when i have some free time.

definitely gonna hit you up for more pointers, wished there were more people benching, some competition will gave me more drive to go all out.

Your competition is (well....was ;)) the entire G73 world haha

Nothing wrong with wanting to just go as high as possible!

And ya, when the freezer gets involved it becomes a time investment. If you want to keep your options open, just leave it in the freezer all the time always on so it does not get too cold. Then you can pop over and run a bench when you feel like it lol. That is what I do during the day when the GF is over. At night it is focus time haha (no distractions ;) )

Just played through Crysis at 1920x1200 all Very High :D (although for the very last scene on the deck of the carrier I did have to step it down to just high - but who doesn't haha - that scene is sick)

That is what john said lol

If it were not for the need to stay upright for the loop to work right and the fact that I only have distilled water as the coolant I might have haha

Probably better that I have not. I actually still need to overclock it, have not gone anywhere with this cpu yet. Took the 920 before it to 4.53 GHz though :) Should be able to beat that some with the extreme chip since binned higher. Unfortunately the GPUs will not have nearly as much headroom, since it is mATX they are sandwiched and the in FurMark at least, they both get up to the low 90s

Scook quick question, I know you've probably benched your laptop in the freezer with the scores you've pulled. Have you had any issues with the lcd in the freezer or do you think it could potentially cause a problem?

The LCD has worked like a champ despite the thorough cooling. Never had to think about it at all. And no, the desktop has not gone in the freezer. The laptop goes on that fan haha

I have never had any issues with the screen at all. There is no reason for there to be a problem either. The liquid crystal is not water, so if it freezes it wont expand. So as soon as it melts all is well again. I do not think it is even freezing though in my case as the screen has worked fine when I needed it while in the freezer

If you guys are ordering 5850 by the case are you planning on trying a stock 5870 vbios to see if it has any advantages?

Also thanks to everyone and Jstarnino on how to flash the vbios. I took mine to 700x1000 @1.05 (stock 5870).

no problem buddy :) you can take it much higher though ( ~800) without your 5850 breaking a sweat.

and if you really want to push it... you can flash it to a higher voltage n all that, n make it reach 990 like Inap did :p... but thats just for benching braggin rights...

@Jstarnino - I just changed my 5850 to 5870 values because I knew it was a safe overclock. How high, for gaming, were you able to take the 5850 with voltage @1.05? Thanks! StevenX

I run my 5850 at 750/1050 default clocks, but 800/1075 is equally workable. There is no universally "safe" overclock, but I would be amazed if you have any issues at either of those settings for gaming purposes. On the other hand, even relatively little increased stress makes no sense unless you see performance benefits resulting in improved game play. Just keep an eye on temps, if they rise past 80C, cut it back a little for sustained use.

Yea please keep in mind, that an Overclock while gaming is rarely worth it... because often, an increase of 3-5fps translates to an increase of 20*C on the gpu...

But OC'ing is diffrent on every system, and every game... so you'd have to experiment for yourself. But like Rev said, ppl usually go for a slight OC to run games, as you want to make sure that its super stable if your gaming, and you don't want your temps to skyrocket... and gaming for hours already can heat up your gpu quite abit at stock so... bette rmonitor those temps! just a couple things to keep in mind... but generally.. 750-800 shouldn't be a problem both stable wize, and temperature wise. But remember any OC will degrade the gpu quicker. How much quicker, well thats where everyone has their diffrent opinions...

To clarify - review the terms of what complete care is - it covers drops and spills - NOT overclocking or any other intentional misuse.

To those who are new to dell and dell policies, i suggest you review the terms of your warranty before jumping on the bandwagon. Be aware, if you cause damage, its not covered - by any warranty.

Complete Care is Accidental Damage coverage with in-home/on-site service. Details can be found here:
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/services/Accidental_Damage_Services_Contract_6_21_10.pdf

Main warranty/policies can be found here:
    http://www.dell.com/content/topics/...service_map?c=us&cs=555&l=en&s=biz&redirect=1

We will not debate here (on NBR) what Dell can 'detect' or check for as it relates to fraud. NBR has a very strict policy against fraud and any posts related to fraud discussion will be removed and mod action up to perm ban will result. There will be no warnings.

Any questions, PM me or another moderator.

Now, get back on topic please... enough of exchanges, replacements and the M17x - we have threads for that. Posts unrelated to post#1 are OT.

    Thanks.
