It's not really blowing it away, The 5870 is a still a better card. People can argue that the 5850 is just an underclock 5870, but there are OC limits for each of the card. And from many experience of the 5870 users, I don't think that a 5850 can come up to the 5870 level.

The 5850 may not reach 5870 OC levels but it should get close (800 mhz territory). After that it's a case of diminishing returns and the difference is minimal.

It seems the 5850s are voltage limited to 1.00, I have a feeling their the same card as the 5870, any ideas how I can get the voltage to 1.15 like many with the 5870 are doing? Also what are you best overclocks at 1.00 voltage?

Well you cannot expect the 5850 to outscore the much higher clocked (or overclocked) 5870s

I can do google checkout but the problem is I will have to wait till it completely clears into my bank. If they are ok with waiting for that before it ships then OK.

Guys, I am very tempted to add the 5870m into my m15x but have a question regarding noise. I have my 260m and the fan is quite quiet, it often only kicks up one notch but if I play something demanding (like bfbc2) it will kick up to the third setting.
For those that have moved from 260 > 5870 can you please comment how the fan behaves?
    Thanks in advance

For me, whenever I play game the fan is very loud but I have a headphone on so it doesn't matter. For web browsing the fan is very quite. Just make sure to use the AMD GPU Clock to download clock it to 200/300 whenver you not playing game.

Thanks mate, that is what I was expecting looking at the higher temps. I think I will stick with the 260m for now as the lack of powerplay and high noise are putting me off. (although gpu tool works, it doesnt drop voltage so you will still have a high idle wattage, on my clevo 870cu it idles at 50w whereas my m15x idles at 35w giving me much better battery life)

So, i have been using my 5870m without downclocking it or anything, just leaving it at stock speed, is this ok? Dttran83, why do you downclock it? for the noise or?

to lower down the temps because you won't be using 3d clocks all the time... Yes it also lowers the speed of the fan..(low noise)...

@ Mutoloco mostly is for the temperature but also the noise. Also with the 10.5 driver I got my frist BSOD yesterday while playing BF2 and whenever I play crysis my temp go up to 87C compare to 82C with 10.3. So I be sticking with 10.3.

I'm to cheap to upgrade to the 5870 (seriously 350 dollars for like what, 3-5 fps improvement compared to the 5850), so is it possible to overclock the 5850 version to the performance of a stock 5870? And if not possible, then what are the max idle/load temps in the m15x without frying your laptop. (I will not be using an external cooling mat).

most people who upgrade to 5870 were 260m owner, and yes it is not worth it to upgrade from 5850. try to oc your card using amd clock tools. also can can probably flash your cards to 5870 stock speeds but i hav e yet to see anyone do this yet. judging from my experience with the 5870 the 5850 max temps should be fine without a cooler.

BTW, why do people get the 260m? The 260m is 50 dollars more than the 5850m and yet the 5850m is GDDR3 while the 260m is GDDR3. o_O Is it that the 260m comes with a larger power supply? /confuzzled

its because at the time only the 240 and 260 were available, just only recently the 5850 was released. but some people perferr the nvidia because of phsx and cuda support for other 3d applications.

yea the 5850 came out just after my 21 day replacement date so im stuck with the 260m sadly also i wasn't sure if it was GDDR5(which it is). I'm most likely to update a few of my components in a few months but for now am very content as my games play at very good frame rates at 1080p.

Oh I see. That's why the 5850 suddenly appeared randomly a few weeks ago. I thought it was just me imagining it didn't exist.

I've always seen Phsx as a marketing scheme and never really understood CUDA.

This is a super deal! I can only recommend this for anyone who has 240m or 260m. On a side topic, I got 2 external monitors working now. The only thing this card seems to lack is sound over DP, but it makes it up with the horsepower!

    In his sig.

Hey guys, I have a problem here and I need some help.

I got the 5870 card installed, and got device manager to detect it. I could even bench the card and run games.... Problem is, after installing the 10.3 preview driver, then installing the 10.5 driver, I still don't get the card fully detected which can be seen here on the GPUz application(Under GPU its nor written as BROADWAY and certain values and not keyed in such as DirectX Support etc..). Due to this, I can't run AMD GPU Clock tools as you can see in the error message when I click on the application. And besides that, as you can see on my desktop, CCC is not present at all when you right click DESKTOP. How do I rectify this problem having tried the 'Power Drain' method and even opening the extraction folder and installing every installer available under packages/apps/ccc folder. For a brief moment CCC was visible on my desktop but nothing happens when you click it. Plus after a restart it disappears again.

There is no option to powerplay in CCC.

Does anyone else have powerplay enabled on the ATI HD5870?

Try this.. might get sound over dp... download 5870 mobility drivers from dells website for m17x-r2.. extract it...

Go to device manager.. Audio devices... There should be a high definition device listed.. update drivers and manually direct to this folder C:\dell\drivers\R259589\Packages\Drivers\WDM\HDMI\W764a
    ..

This should install the driver for the sound over dp.. i have already installed the drivers but have nothing to test on...

@inap hey can ya test that bro!!!!

yes I tried this already. I tried different driver versions as well. CCC keeps telling me that I have a HDMI->DVi adapter plugged in and sound wont be available :/ . Also, the ATI sound device is always unplugged. I fear that it might have to do something with the wiring :/
