hey guys really considering taking the plunge in getting the M15x and the DIY gfx upgrade to 5870 but have a couple of noobie questions that i was hoping u guys might be able to answer....

from wat i have gathered the 5870 heatsink is from the clevo and regardless not compatible in the M15x system.

and furthermore i need to grab the existing gfx card mounting bracket and heatsink so.... does anyone know if the ATI 5730 heatsink would be adequate for the 5870 or where i may find out?
(coz the 5730 is the card i'd be considering getting to cut down on costs if im gonna upgrade it anyways)

    Please and thank you ^^

All m15x heatsinks are the same arcoss the board so no worries. Babyhemi is having a sale the 5870 so right now is a perfect time to buy them. Prices may go up once he runs out of stock of the current ones.

This definitely seems like a viable solution. Does putting the 5870 hamper battery life, even if you put the laptop in stealth mode? Next question is can you put a set of XFIRE 5870s in this laptop? This way I pretty much get my m17x set up plus more battery life for stealth mode.

Well the M15x can only take one GPU.....

you can put two in an M17x but the ones Hemi is selling do not have a crossfire connector....so that is pointless

and no one has tried them in the R1 that I know of but I am pretty sure they do not work there

pretty much stealth mode no longer works, but you can down clock your card to save battery life. sorry no cf 5870 for M15x.

So a new question then would be the performance of 1 5870 compare to 2 5870s in xfire non-existant? or is would ther be a huge performance bump really noticable ?

EDIT: didnt see inappropriatename_3's post, so then would the power savings in when throttling down the 5870 in the m15x be still better then the m17x-R2?

yes, I can get up to 2 hours of battery when the gfx card is throttled down (manually)

the M17x R2 and M15x can achieve about the same battery life if everything is downclocked and put in low power mode

So then how much better is having 2 5870s in xfire compare to just one? does someone know this???

Then theoretically i should be able to get 2 hours of usable word doc time? I mean all ill be running on battery is with stealth mode on, word doc and the occasional web browser? Would i get more milage out of the battery then? Right now my decision comes to this one element, the battery time in class while using word doc, if i can get it to last more the 1 class perferable 3 but 2 classes for sure at an hour a class.

well of course 2 cards will always be better than 1 card. but check out the benchmark thread for both, surprisingly right now the the performance gains aren't that huge, but maybe will be different once dell fixes their driver issue. having 2 cards doesn't mean doubling the performance, its more like 1.5 instead of 2 times better.

it always depends. Some games dont even support crossfire at all at release day and patch it only after. Sometimes you never get a patch. But in general I agree with Inap.

battery life is not a strong point for any gaming laptop. it just something you will have to deal with if you want a beast of a laptop. i suggest getting a extra battery or an M11x.

I figured as much with all the hardware and junk, and i was thinking id buy 2 batteries and do the ol' swaparoo in class, but I mean for some word doc and web browser with stealth on all low settings, you figure 2+ hours ??

If they still offered the R1 with the WUXGA screen, I would just recommend that if battery like is your goal. Due to the integrated graphics you can pull 3.5 hours of battery like with it. Unfortunately though they don't offer it with the better screen anymore :(

How much gaming do you do? Maybe an M11x would be all you need.....and it still gets netbook class battery life

Well currently on my ps3 ALOT, but its dying so im trying to kill 2 birds with one stone. Get gaming and a laptop for school just to do some basic word doc and web browser. so this thing will probably be running all day most likely from one to the other. Battery life needs to be atleast marginal, Be able to handle atleast 3 classes 2 min without having to find a jack, if i knew all my classes had power outlets id be fine. but I dont.

At school all setting will be low and on stealth, I just chatted with a lady at dell and she says min of 4 hours in these settings for the m17x 9-cell, I understand shes trying to sell a product, but she said 4-6 hour on that batt. Is this realistic or no?

Guys I need help big time. I put the 5870 inside the laptop, installed the 10.5 ati driver manually from Device Manager. I goto run Windows Index and when it first starts to run the DX9 test the laptop shuts off. I have put thermal pads on the RAM banks, and MX3 thermal paste on the die. I have done this three different times with no luck. Any suggestions? I'm confused. The video card shouldn't be overheating that fast to shut the computer down.

Try the 10.4 or 10.3 driver. For me the 10.5 was kinda buggy. Also, run AMD GPU Clock tool and go to the Thermal Sensors tab. you can monitor the temps there and also log them to a file. Since your pc restarts, try logging them to a file and hope that the buffers get flushed before the shutdown.

Also, what is your temp on idle?

To those whom have responded to my problem a few days back. Just to update that I got CCC Running and installed. The problem lies in the extraction folder and after re-downloading the 10.5 catalyst full suite, the CCC Setup folder and files were complete and thus allowed a full installed which had to be done manually by looking up the files under Packages/Apps/CCC . However though I've udpated to the newest 10.5 driver from AMD, I still can't get my card detected fully as seen in the picture of a screenshot I have uploaded below. Pay attention to the areas circled and a quick comparison with those whom have the drivers fully installed would show that mine still doesn't have a proper name BROADWAY and instead is given a codename 68A0. DirectX Support values are still unstated thus rendering it impossible to run AMD GPU Clock tools and seen on my screen as an error message "No Valid Device Detected"....

I'm out of ideas as to handle this  as I have just started from scratch from my previous attempt. :(

    Hey,

Try using a later version of GPU-Z. The current version is 0.4.3. Under catalyst, I get the same device ID. Also, which version of GPU clock tool are you running? Try using the latest

try to do a bios reset, open up the bottom of laptop, then unplug the coin battery connector, then do the power drain trick. then reconnect and boot up. as devise id i get the same 68A0. as for gpu-z make sure it the newest version available, otherwise it would not read right. did you reinstall steam or was it already installed when you replaced the gpu. if it was pre existing, the issues is it install when you have a 260 and its trying to find your 260. a reinstallation should fix that problem.
