wonders why this doesn't get transitioned over to "Long threads, guides, etc..." section?

260M has been proven to be upgradable to 5870, what about the 5850's? Does the heatsink compatible with HD5870?
-

-
heard it was the same heatsink across the board. but still best to wait till confirmed.
-
It is. I had the GT 240M. When I upgraded to the GTX 260M they didnt change the heatsink. When I asked about it they said that all the cards use the same heatsink. -
-
If anyone wants to make sure just call the dell parts store and ask. That is where I got my info from. Im pretty sure if they had any other heat sinks they would have told me. -
Has anybody already tested the sound to the TV over the display port with the 5870?
-
Anyone know if the I7 940xm will work with the M15x?
-
-
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Hopefully in July the 940XM will be shipping. Intel has them in production right now
-
Congrats...
-
I also didn't get it working. Will another driver, as the 10.4, get the DisplayPort work? 10.3 for example?
Has anybody improved his Heatsink with additional cooling pads? Like this one:

Ok got my card delivered today... Already installed it.... used MX-3 and idling at 55 c... thats nice... but thing is my clocks show 699.99 on amd gpu tool but hw32 shows core clock at 700... and force installed the driver 10.3 preview.... ran 3dmark vantage on stock clocks got 7826. max temp when benchmarking was 72c. I couldn't get to install the CC... Any suggestions about the best drivers and way to install CC..
and ya what about 699.99 reading on amd gpu tool.... -
They are the same clocks, hw32 and GPU-Z round off to the near whole number. Those are great temps btw !
-
sup wiz, congrats on new card. what we found to work is download the M17x driver and extracting it. and just use the ccc exe from that file.
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
Does everyone have to point the inf file or just the folder to install the driver and there a number of 5870 listed when i select the inf driver file which should i choose
-
i just point at the folder, didn't you have the drivered installed already?
btw look at page 91 and the last post, that should help you get the ccc going. -
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
i did.. but i had to use the option where u choose the driver. and when i point to the directory nothing happens...
I have downloaded the 10.3 drivers and pointing to the folder driver\w76A_inf... my computer doesn't pick up the driver... -
so no driver is installed right now???? try to run the exe and it will install to a directory in the c: folder under ati or amd. then go to control panel and direct it to that folder.
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
I had already installed the driver but pointing at inf file... Was just wondering if i couldn't direct it to the directory and get at automated installation instead
of forcing and finally got it installed this way as well... Going to do the cc stuff
now... Thnx again bro...
10.3 preview drivers right now.. -
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
I also see that raid is supported on the hw32 info... Just wondering if i can get 2nd hard drive on raid ... I know we can get 2nd hdd in there..
-
yeah don't know why these ati drivers are such a pain to install.
-
Which driver is is the best to use with a 5870?

10.4 install fine too.
1) download driver 10.4
2) when extracting the files to install , there will be a path it will extract to. Copy the path before it extract.
3) after it extract the files, it will prompt to install, at this point cancel the install.
4) go Start, right click Computer, Click Propertities, Click Device Manager, Click Display adaptor, when you see VGA Graphic , Right click Update Driver, then click Browse my computer for driver software , this is where you right click and paste the path and hit the next button. It should install and display ATI HD 5800. I would advise you to restart the computer after that. -

There should be some new posts of 5870's MOD's of late. Where are you?
-
hahaha all the excitement wore off, oh well waiting to see some 5850 benches.
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
which pads are you using
-
I'm using the thermal adhesive tape from akasa
-
thewhitewizard Notebook Evangelist
i am using the same ones but it is only 0.3mm thick.... so I had to use it with the heatpads for GTX260m... Is it cold out there or something because I am idling at 57-58c... If its a bit cold the gpu idles at 55c... All these temp at stock clocks...
-
yeah those are awesome temps, i idle around the low to mid 40's at those clocks. and low 50's when at stock.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Remarkable temps. Looks like you have dedicated A/C cooling for that thing. Congratulations. You owe the rest of us lessons on the care and maintenance of the 5870m.
@Inapp: my experience is the same as yours. And I'm pretty happy with it. -
yeah pretty happy with temps also, but any mod to shave off a few more degrees would be awesome.

cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
That has to be with an ac unit or really downclocked or something......
-
Is there anything specific you did with pads to get those idle temps?
-
cookinwitdiesel Retired Bencher
that is not due to pads....that is something else.....
-
hi guys, just wanted to add to the temp talk,
I idle at 57-59 for stock, allnighter of BFBC2 brings my temp to max of 80c for stock. Starcraft 2 beta brings it up to 84-85c max (i think it's due to not really good design w blizzard n ati cards? prolly will get better once they finalizes it?)
I use mx-3 thermal, and thermal pads from frozencpu site, i ordered .5mm so i had to stack it several times, and it works just fine! -
-
Hi!
I've ordered a 5870 myself and I have never swapped a GPU before.
So although I am shimmering with anticipation, I am slightly frightened by the heat!!!
So
What did you guys use (thermal paste or adhesive film [1mm?])?
Any specific tools, programs or utilities to keep things under control?
Would Appreciate any help
Best regards. -
nice, congrats. yeah you will need thermal compound for the gpu itself, i used mx-3. also you will need some thermal pad for the ram, you can get new ones or reuse the ones from your old gpu. in my sig is a gpu replacement guide. use amd tools to underclock your card when not doing anything intensive, or to oc when you want to,
-
-
yes the pads are for the memory, you will see what i'm talking about once you open up the laptop.
-
Nope..why would they?
