260M has been proven to be upgradable to 5870, what about the 5850's? Does the heatsink compatible with HD5870?

It is. I had the GT 240M. When I upgraded to the GTX 260M they didnt change the heatsink. When I asked about it they said that all the cards use the same heatsink.

Um yeah but im not talking about the 5850. I had the GT 240M. But I do Highly doubt the 5850 is smaller then the GT 240M. Its almost half the size of the GTX 260M.

If anyone wants to make sure just call the dell parts store and ask. That is where I got my info from. Im pretty sure if they had any other heat sinks they would have told me.

Yes, I did and could not get it to work with 10.4 drivers from the ATI website.

totally wrong thread to ask the question. My hunch is that it should work, no idea if the bios supports it though.

Motherboard supports it, but Im not sure if the BIOS do/Are required too. Probably need a new BIOS to get them running in the M15x/M17XR2

so no driver is installed right now???? try to run the exe and it will install to a directory in the c: folder under ati or amd. then go to control panel and direct it to that folder.

It's not Dell OEM card for m15x thats why.

    10.4 install fine too.

    1) download driver 10.4
    2) when extracting the files to install , there will be a path it will extract to. Copy the path before it extract.
    3) after it extract the files, it will prompt to install, at this point cancel the install.
    4) go Start, right click Computer, Click Propertities, Click Device Manager, Click Display adaptor, when you see VGA Graphic , Right click Update Driver, then click Browse my computer for driver software , this is where you right click and paste the path and hit the next button. It should install and display ATI HD 5800. I would advise you to restart the computer after that.

i am using the same ones but it is only 0.3mm thick.... so I had to use it with the heatpads for GTX260m... Is it cold out there or something because I am idling at 57-58c... If its a bit cold the gpu idles at 55c... All these temp at stock clocks...

Remarkable temps. Looks like you have dedicated A/C cooling for that thing. Congratulations. You owe the rest of us lessons on the care and maintenance of the 5870m.

hi guys, just wanted to add to the temp talk,

I idle at 57-59 for stock, allnighter of BFBC2 brings my temp to max of 80c for stock. Starcraft 2 beta brings it up to 84-85c max (i think it's due to not really good design w blizzard n ati cards? prolly will get better once they finalizes it?)

I use mx-3 thermal, and thermal pads from frozencpu site, i ordered .5mm so i had to stack it several times, and it works just fine!

    Hi!

    I've ordered a 5870 myself :) and I have never swapped a GPU before.
So although I am shimmering with anticipation, I am slightly frightened by the heat!!!
    So :D
What did you guys use (thermal paste or adhesive film [1mm?])?
Any specific tools, programs or utilities to keep things under control?

    Would Appreciate any help :)
    Best regards.

nice, congrats. yeah you will need thermal compound for the gpu itself, i used mx-3. also you will need some thermal pad for the ram, you can get new ones or reuse the ones from your old gpu. in my sig is a gpu replacement guide. use amd tools to underclock your card when not doing anything intensive, or to oc when you want to,
