Undervolting will drop temps a bit too, so long as the card doesnt just drop out from lack of adequate voltage...
-
Rather than dropping another $2000 on a brand new one...
-
Just order mine from dell. Total come out to be 575.08 with free next day shipping. I will post some picture and benchmark once I get it.

Cant wait to see how this works out
Im gonna wait a while before I upgrade, but I most likely will when I've heard about the long-term effects -
If you overclock it ridiculously high, you'll run into thermal issues. Stock or a modest OC should be manageable in the M15x.

I want 485 SLi!
-
I'm thinking about buying the 5850... I don't know the cost though... -
I just called Dell and they said that they didn't have it available separate from the lap top right now. In other words, they don't have spare parts available right now.
I think that buying this card at 575 or whatever it is going for and a 920XM Processor on Ebay for 350, would be about 925.00 in upgrades. My guess is that it won't be outperformed too much by other computers. I spec'd out an mx17 R3 with the 6970 and the 2820 processor and it came to 2500. That is about 1600 more than it would cost me to just upgrade my mx15. So I am with the upgrade crowd! -

I want a 6970 so bad that I can taste it. Really i just bought a 5850, to replace my 5730. I wish I would have waited. I could have spent the extra 200 and got a super monster of a card!
Damn my impatience. I guess it will make a nice upgrade in the not too distant future! -
-
@Dttran83
Did you finally get the card in? -
I know the card is 575, but my mind automatically just pretends the 75 isn't there....it makes it easier for me to justify the expense.
And no my 5850 from Dell was 300. -
-
oh haha ic. You can look it like that. -
I could have ordered a Baseline R3 with the ATI 6970 and 240 Watt PSU and lowest spec everything CPU, SCreen, for like 1,100-1,200 dollars. Many of you are clearly over paying for the GPU if you're spending upwards towards $600-500 for that GPU.
-
Hahhahaah those numbers are clear as crystal XD. I'll send you an email as well . -
-
-
-
-
Yes where did you get that price from? I would buy that instead of the card if I can get a M17x R3 with that price.
-
I'm just a, little paranoid that most consider the M15x to be of better build quality. That is one of the deal breakers for the m17x r3.
At least in my opinion. -
It's not that they're overpaying for the 6970M, it's that Dell can only afford to knock the upgrade price of a 6970M down to $250.00 (That seems to be the default +/Upgrade Option) when you're paying for an entire new system.
T;DR - It's cheaper to buy a new system than to buy parts individually from almost any company/corporation that buys their parts wholesale.
I would guess that that order was haggled on the phone, as online prices are rarely as cheap (because they're more convenient). However, if you have a history with Dell I bet you could get some great deals. -
The order was not haggled at all, in fact is quite painless. What really happened was I gave my place of employment to my EPP Rep guy and then my name and then he quoted me at around 1,600+ over the weekend. I then made the order and paid for it on Tuesday He then called the following afternoon on my cellphone to foretell me of an upcoming sale on Monday (This Monday the 11th) and that I should cancel my order and re-do the order to get around 35% off the listed price as compared to the previous EPP price (which is actually alot in itself). Because he liked me or because I had already made a purchase they decided to run my order ahead of time anyways.Once we re-did my order it came to around 1200, which i then started doing cart wheels around my house. After I had a glass of water and regain my composure as I literally had the rep call me back in 30 mins (I was actually contemplating ordering multiple PC's) I then decided to upgrade my CPU and LED screen and then I guess I haggled to get Free Shipping because I told my Rep I'd like to keep it under 1,500 after taxes if at all possible, and that I would downgrade the CPU if this wasn't possible. So then the Rep got his manger to knock off Shipping, and then I paid.
Now I wait about 18-19 days and my System will be at my door
And to ArchNemesis where you say you're a little paranoid that you think the m15x is of better build quality I say the system is hardly portable to utilize the strong case. When you consider that you're using the same bag as the m17x series (Orion Bag or at least some 17 inch designed laptop bag) and your battery life being just under or over an hour, I say you pretty much have a non-portable system much like my other aluminum m17x R2. The r3 and SandyBridge offers a 4-5 hour battery life which is a huge substantial difference, and so it's made of soft touch rubber. Well the system was just a little over a grand, and like most Asus Rubber/Plastic PC's the price I got quoted was as close to those Asus Systems as it's really ever going to be. So you won't get or hear a complaint from me, yet I personally would go with an R2 before all of 'em but I just wanted to try out an R3 for a little bit and then probably pass on my savings to another member on the boards once I resell the system. -
Darkloki, can you pm me contact for this rep? I'm trying to help my friend buy a m17x.
-
1500$ for a M17x R3?!?!
Here in Spain we have to pay 2 times more to get the same config... -
Eurocom Launches Mobility Radeon HD 6970 MXM Board | techPowerUp
looks like the hd6970m is a 75w gpu -
No if you read the comments the 75w quoted is just the GPU not including the MXM board or the memory chips.
-
Im wondering, the 5850 power consumption is about 50w. The HD 6970 is 75w ++ (up to 100w i think). So that means more heat and more power consumed. Right? So is the motherboard designed to supply only 50w or it automatically supply the needed power regardless the card?
-
-
My system gives me about 2.5 hours, which I admit isn't very long, but I at least I know it's fairly durable. I take my system everywhere especially at friend's for lans so battery life isn't usually an issue. As for upgrading, if I buy the card for $575 and sell my current 5850 it'll cost around the same as the upgrade cost for the r3.
Anyway, has any one messed around with card for extended periods yet? -
Dell had delay my shipping date again so I had cancel the order. I just order it from aikimox, he a retailer on here from the clevo forum. So hopefully it be here by next week.
-
For those who want, you can get one from pkhetan. He's a Clevo middle man and can get them quite cheap, the process is a bit long winded but people have had good experiences with him as you get a very good price in the end. At first I thought it was a scam but it seems legit. Here's how it works:

Hey guys,
Anyone tried a GTX485m on the m15x?
Some guy on another forum claim to have it working or sounds like he got it working, but without proof -
If I grab one, I full intend on trying to undervolt it first thing. -
You either need a good bunch of pics and verified benches, or it needs to come from an established member. -
which makes me feel like i'm missing something.
Did fynight even tried the 485? If he did, someone please link me to the thread -
He talked about releasing the hack as soon as he gets th "ok", but he never showed here up again... and there has never been a picture or anything around to prove it.
Edit: check out his posts here. -
The dude from the other forum seems to be spending big bucks for his GTX485m mod.
According to him, he's waiting for a mobo (probably physical) and bios mod to be completed.
I'll just drop some news here in case he succeeds -
What about the 470m GTX?
-
-
Well Inap tried it a few months ago with "half" luck as it wouldn't go up to 3d clocks. But with recent bios A09 and official nvidia drivers now support the card it may be possible again.

*M15X + 6970* Anyone thinking of trying when they come out?
