So if a near 100w card works why won't a 470m GTX work?! I would love to get a 6970 but I'm bound to Cuda because of the applications I use. I'm living on the wrong continent.

thats still a mystery, the 470m does boot up, just need it to kick into 3d clocks.

Yeah with the recent bios update and now the 470m GTX is officially support without modding...the dream is still out there, just $700 away...

Did you try flashing the vbios so all the entries are the same? Meaning 2d/3d etc. are all at the highest voltage and 3d clocks?

You'd lose battery life, and generate more heat at idle, but it's better than not being able to run the GTX 470. :p

Hmm.. I didnt ask. What you see in the pic is the whole conversation.
I guess you could call the extension she provided and find out :p

    @Inap:
I had 2 reps tell me the same thing :)
But you are probably right. Be on the safe side and ask the one selling you the card. You could always use my chatlog as a reference if that makes any difference.
Guess they cant really go around telling people different things :)

No no, I never said that. I'm just speculating as the last time we tried a 470m we were still on A08 and official nvidia drivers wouldn't work without modding.

Ah. I see. I'd really love to see how this 6970 thing pans out. Also, I've noticed that the stock clocks on Nvidia cards are kinda low...Like, the 470m is 500mhz. That's a really low clock speed...what's up with that?

Yeah like all things the laptop cards are always downclocked desktop versions. 470m is a downclocked GTX 460 SE, the 6970m is a downclocked 6850.

I have a strange gtx 470m card and I am in NJ near NYC if anyone would like to meet up.
Its definitely not Clevo or whatever brand was attempted previously, so maybe it will run at full clocks :)

Call dell today and the rep quote me at 565 before tax and shipping. After tax and shipping he said it be around 645. I told him that was to much so he went and talk to his manager and the lowest they could do is 575. That include tax and shipping. What you guy think?

You had to mount it in the machine with the 5870 plate, or the 6970 plate?

Also, I hope we can tell if the layout is the same from the Dell cards and the Clevo cards from the pics. I'd love to try for one of those 1120 shader ES's.

The question is have you checked the clocks when its installed, are they running full? any fan problems, what kind of scores are you getting etc.... were testing out the 485m over in the M17x lounge, we got it installed and its working pretty awesome, but there are some minor problems, and no S3D :(.... hopefully you guys are having good luck over here.

But how much o/c potential does it have? I mean, it must run hot already for sucking so much power...100w or something? It's stock clocks are already 20 MHz lower than the 5870...

Yeah but its not just about clock rate but also the number of pipelines it has. The 5870 has 800 whereas the 6970 has 960.

Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Its listed as the 9th best mobile graphics card.
HD5870 is listed as nr 17, whereas 5850 is down in the forties.
This is not just listed by the specs it has, but also by tons of benchmarking.
You can compare the different cards and their benchmarks by clicking on them :)

Wont the 6970 have a HUUUGE effect on batterylife since its drawing 2-2½ times the power 5850 does?

Thanks Inap. Great news, and crucial, about PowerPlay. Comparing the GPU score to the R3 GPU scores, it looks like the 6970m is running flat out in the M15x so it has at least enough power to run it at stock clocks with a 720qm. My biggest concern is the power requirements for a 920-940xm and the 6970m and whether or how much o/c'ing can be supported. Can't decide whether to go on and order one and find out or wait for the early adopters to jump in and ride on their efforts. Gonna probably need a 240W brick too to check it out fully.

Gave the Sager to a friend to clear out some space for the next one, whatever that turns out to be. Once I moved the 920xm over to the M15x, the Sager became superfluous anyway.

Just keep in mind the M15x mxm port and circuitry weren't designed for a card that can use up to 100W load. Don't be surprised to find your M15x dead after sometime.

Hm...is this 240watt psu is external? Sorry if this sounds noobish...is this referring to the brick that the power plug goes into? Also, is the assumption that this larger psi can power both a 940xm and an over 6970?

yes the psu is the power brick. we are not assuming anything yet.
like joker said the 6970 was never meant for an M15x so we don't know what the long term effects would be. even though the initial test seems good, more testing is still needed.

Yeah, I ordered mine there... hope it will arrive soon. I contacted them about warranty and returning. It should be fine as long as you contact them in advance, just let them know you order it for a M15x. I guess in case it works fine they will soon change it so that you can order the card specifically for the M15x.
