So I thought I would investigate this further, and this is what I came up with:

just a reminder, don't rely on anything a single sells rep tells you.
-
So if a near 100w card works why won't a 470m GTX work?! I would love to get a 6970 but I'm bound to Cuda because of the applications I use. I'm living on the wrong continent.
-
thats still a mystery, the 470m does boot up, just need it to kick into 3d clocks.
-
Yeah with the recent bios update and now the 470m GTX is officially support without modding...the dream is still out there, just $700 away...
-
You'd lose battery life, and generate more heat at idle, but it's better than not being able to run the GTX 470. -
yeah i didn't want to risk bricking another card, hehehheh
-
Check this out. Modded voltage max was 0.94v and now 0.99v(the 470m is the only Fermi card that supports this) http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...on-460m-470m-480m-485m-newer.html#post7222942
GPU score of over 12K!!! -
I guess you could call the extension she provided and find out
@Inap:
I had 2 reps tell me the same thing
But you are probably right. Be on the safe side and ask the one selling you the card. You could always use my chatlog as a reference if that makes any difference.
Guess they cant really go around telling people different things -
-
No no, I never said that. I'm just speculating as the last time we tried a 470m we were still on A08 and official nvidia drivers wouldn't work without modding.
-
Ah. I see. I'd really love to see how this 6970 thing pans out. Also, I've noticed that the stock clocks on Nvidia cards are kinda low...Like, the 470m is 500mhz. That's a really low clock speed...what's up with that?
-
Yeah like all things the laptop cards are always downclocked desktop versions. 470m is a downclocked GTX 460 SE, the 6970m is a downclocked 6850.

niffcreature ex computer dyke
I have a strange gtx 470m card and I am in NJ near NYC if anyone would like to meet up.
Its definitely not Clevo or whatever brand was attempted previously, so maybe it will run at full clocks -
Out of interest what is strange about it? And if it works, I got dibs! Joke, but not really...
-
Call dell today and the rep quote me at 565 before tax and shipping. After tax and shipping he said it be around 645. I told him that was to much so he went and talk to his manager and the lowest they could do is 575. That include tax and shipping. What you guy think?
-
seems like a deal to me.
-
Also, I hope we can tell if the layout is the same from the Dell cards and the Clevo cards from the pics. I'd love to try for one of those 1120 shader ES's. -
I think the original plate that come with your laptop. It can be from the 240, 260, and 5850. I think any of those would work.
-
So, are we gonna get some pics soon?
-
575 for the 6970m is a good price. If i could get one at that price over here i would buy it this instant.

MrButterBiscuits ~Veritas Y Aequitas~
The question is have you checked the clocks when its installed, are they running full? any fan problems, what kind of scores are you getting etc.... were testing out the 485m over in the M17x lounge, we got it installed and its working pretty awesome, but there are some minor problems, and no S3D .... hopefully you guys are having good luck over here.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
@Rouge-OP or Inap -- what CPU does Rogue have in his M15x?
-
I think it was the 740, and powerplay did work on the 6970.
-
But how much o/c potential does it have? I mean, it must run hot already for sucking so much power...100w or something? It's stock clocks are already 20 MHz lower than the 5870...
-
Yeah but its not just about clock rate but also the number of pipelines it has. The 5870 has 800 whereas the 6970 has 960.
-
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Its listed as the 9th best mobile graphics card.
HD5870 is listed as nr 17, whereas 5850 is down in the forties.
This is not just listed by the specs it has, but also by tons of benchmarking.
You can compare the different cards and their benchmarks by clicking on them
Wont the 6970 have a HUUUGE effect on batterylife since its drawing 2-2½ times the power 5850 does? -
So then...this means that Dell sneakily added bios support somehow?

-
Rev what happened to your Sager?
-
My prayers have been answered! I'll probably buy the card sometime this week and end up putting another 5850 for sale, lol.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Gave the Sager to a friend to clear out some space for the next one, whatever that turns out to be. Once I moved the 920xm over to the M15x, the Sager became superfluous anyway.
-
yeah i realy wished i still had my M15x to test. if you need a 240watt psu, let me know i can loan you one.
alot more testing is need but looks good to me, wished i would of tested the power draw when i had the chance. only had the system for maybe 2 hours max. anyone care to loan me an M15x, heheheh. -
Well now that it at least works I'm definitely gonna get one. I just gotta pull the trigger on spending all that money after I just bought my car =x
-
Just keep in mind the M15x mxm port and circuitry weren't designed for a card that can use up to 100W load. Don't be surprised to find your M15x dead after sometime.
-
-
yes the psu is the power brick. we are not assuming anything yet.
like joker said the 6970 was never meant for an M15x so we don't know what the long term effects would be. even though the initial test seems good, more testing is still needed. -
Damn wish I had a proper job (I'm a student). Hopefully my job interview was successful. Good to see that it works without problem. Probably going to see some numbers cropping up soon
-
for anyone still thinking of doing this you can buy the 6970 form here
Alienware m17r3 HD6970 MXM Upgrade prices are 430us and 475eu these prices are in Euro's as well don't no if the warranty will hold up but you can always ask -
Yeah, I ordered mine there... hope it will arrive soon. I contacted them about warranty and returning. It should be fine as long as you contact them in advance, just let them know you order it for a M15x. I guess in case it works fine they will soon change it so that you can order the card specifically for the M15x.
-
I will order mine hopefully by this week from Dell.
-

430 Euros = 612.06 USD
-
Dude. Rather than buying a whole new lappy in the next four years, I'll just drop some cash on a 940xm and a 6970 sweet 8)
-
^^^ that what I'm thinking!!
-
People better hope their M15x doesn't fry to death after using 6970 extensively...
-
man but thats still like 1k in upgrades, ouch!!
-
*M15X + 6970* Anyone thinking of trying when they come out?
