Why bother when that's what they're going to do right now? We're going to have a definitive answer as to whether or not it will work.

I am sure that many M15x owners could not be more thankful for your effort!. Kudos to Rogue-OP as well! :D

Next question: Where can I purchase AMD HD 6970 which is bundled with Dell warranty, just to be on the safe side?

inap, it would be great if you can produce a PDF file detailing how you install the card inside M15x and test its stability. :)

DAMN! Awesome news. I just sold my M15x to my buddy, so he'll be happy to hear this. I gave it to him for $1100, and now for a few hundred bucks more, his system will be just as powerful as my R3 for almost $1k less. The M15x just became the bang for buck champ, if you're willing to go used.

OUCH ! i just talked to dell - Sweden and the 6970m card costs $920 !

Do you guys have any ideas how i can get this card cheaper? Do you think the mxm-upgrade card has the same problem as clevo 5870m where sound over DP/HDMi would not be available?

I use my laptop alot with my home cinema and need both picture and sound over DP/HDMi.

Hope to hear some great ideas about my little "dilemma".

Do you mean that we can buy HD 6970M direct from Dell? Isn't it restricted to the owners of M17x-R3? Can M15x users purchase this card from Dell, so that it is protected with Dell warranty?

Ouch... I'm going to get the mxm-upgrade card and I can let you know whether it works or not. By the way, you can have 5.1 output via the three stereo jacks (2x headphone and 1x microphone) works great, so that would be a solution too.

Depends on whether you can persuade the rep to sell you the card... According to my experience you may have a hard time doing so, they usually want the service tag of your machine and then they say the can't sell you a card that's not sold with your system... and even if they would do so the warranty would be voided... that's what they're going to tell you probably.

The Clevo 5870's had powerplay disabled, meaning it always ran at 3D clocks. I haven't seen evidence that it's working on the 6970's yet.

Thanks for confirming my doubt. :( Probably, I just wait if there is any Dell HD 6970m on sale with Dell warranty.

Other method is to request the owners of M17x-R3 to purchase additional HD 6970m direct from Dell. Then, they can sell the cards with Dell warranty to any M15x owners who are interested. Hopefully, it would work.

Yeah i called in to dell with my M15x service tag and told them directly what i wanted. He then looked up the 6970 and asked some questions if it works with a M17x 6970 in an M15x and i told him that the graphics cards are identical to the 15 and 17 system. I told him that i know what im doing.

He sounded wery interested himself and was able to sell me a card.. But at that price im not ready to buy one.

Ugh, those 3 jacks would never deliver the quality sound that Hdmi delivers. Also where would i connect those 3 cables on my receiver. Im not using a crappy computer sound system :)

I also dont think you can get HD master sound via those 3.

Im really excited to hear if you can get video and sound via hdmi from the mxm-upgrade 6970 card. You´ll be my hero if you could test that for me.

If that is the case, presumably Dell will not dispatch on-site technician to install HD 6970m in our M15x, right? I know, anyone with the knowledge similar to inap's, can easily install the card inside M15x.

For a novice user like me, it is a bit of the journey into unknown, even though I myself have read inap's guides. Coupled with the fact that my warranty may be voided for installing officially unsupported video card, I fear damaging my laptop to the point it is not protected by the warranty. :(

No they will not help you with installing the card. Im not even sure they will give you any warranty on the card itself.. But i ordered an 5850m from dell and that card is under warranty so im not totaly sure about this..

Anyways installing the 6970m is no problem at all.

Well, as svl7 pointed out, HD 5850m is officially supported by M15x. That is why Dell provides a warranty for that card you purchased from Dell.

HD 6970m is not officially supported by M15x. Even though Dell is obliged to provide warranty for the card bought from Dell, Dell can refuse to provide the warranty, on the basis that it is not officially supported by M15x.

Just hope it wont void warranty, since paying for 3 years+accidental damage would be such a waste if its gonna be voided anyway :(

He got a M17x R3 and meet up with a member on here to do the swap. The mounting plate is the metal x thing on the back of your graphic card where the four screw from the heatsink go into just pop that out and put it onto your new card.
