It's probable that they haven't actually sent your order into processing since they aren't open over the weekend?
Also your credit card hasn't been charged. What Dell does is when you place an order they issue a temporary hold of the required funds to your credit card company. This is just to make sure the card is valid and you actually have the funds available to pay for the PC. After 3 or so days you should see that hold clear from your card. When your laptop ships (which is usually after a week or two) then Dell will actually issue a charge on your credit card.
The reason they do this is because if you want to change or cancel your order it's far easier for dell to do so since nothing has been charged. If they charged your card when you ordered the system and you decided to change something or cancel the order, then they have to either issue a refund or charge you for the remaining balance. Both of those options cost Dell extra money since every card issuer / payment processor will charge them a percentage of the cost as a processing fee.

Order was placed early Friday morning over the phone and details given at that point. I did order a previous order on a Friday, and it was in the system right away, also charged right away too, the order was processed at a rapid rate.
Seems strange they took this approach this time around. I did call my credit company to check to see if the authorization was done by Dell (don't like seeing no status on my order/account) and it checked out OK it was them, but they had not done the final step in the credit card process (according to my card provider), which I think is actually charge it.
As they have changed what they are doing this time around, compared to my previous order, this is adding in a unexpected extra delay (what is the point ordering on a Friday!). I will undoubtedly now will not be around to collect it due to a holiday break coming up.
Hopefully from what you have said, hopefully I can cancel my order at its current state, before it is to late.
I called tech support, Dell are refusing to send anyone else in the world that buys a AW 15 or 17 their knowledge base with a 240W power supply, to correct issues for low performance with the 180W with the 980M that is in my order.
Guy keep on saying you need the A02 beta BIOS, and I said thay isnt the acutal fix yet. Once I found out the future BIOS is just going to use the battery to used/drain power from to supplement the weak 180W power supply, this has totally put me off it altogether.
They are just say the 240W offer is only for US and Canada customers, which is utter BS and I am disgusted that it is not for everyone, as anyone with 980M model is still going to have the same issues, no matter where they are in the world.
In that case if I am stuck with 180W, they can shove their order for "high-end gaming notebook" that comes with lower performance issues!Last edited: Mar 21, 2015 -
Also sometimes the order statuses don't really match up. You would expect them to because lets be ****ing honest, how hard is it but there are times when they simply just don't. For example if I call Dell up it says my order is still processing (ie they're still waiting for verification from my CC company that I have the relevant funds). But if I check online it says it's in production.
Don't worry about it too much. Check on monday and if it still doesn't show up then give them a call but I'm willing to bet that on Monday it'll show up as "In Production"
See in the US Dell only has to prove that the power supply won't blow up and burn down the house (I'm exaggerating but you get my point). In the EU dell has to certify that both the laptop and the PSU (because its a complete unit) so they can't just add in a 240W PSU because it'll no longer be certified and hence no longer legal for sale. It's completely and utterly ********. A bigger PSU doesn't increase your fire risk, doesn't increase your chances of damaging anything. I could plug a 50000W PSU into my laptop and the single ONLY difference would be now I have to carry around something that weighs 200 lbs instead of something that weighs 2 lbs. The PSU will only supply as much power as the laptop draws. If that's 200W then the PSU will supply 200W even if its rated to supply 50000W. But thats the EU for you....
As for the power thing. I really think it's a BIOS issue. The same laptop from Clevo works fine with 180W and since it has almost exactly the same specs as the Alienware, the AW should only need 180W too. And I think the way they both do it is the hybrid power thingy (most of the time its 180W but if it needs any extra it pulls it from the battery). I personally don't like the system but I do think that the reason the AW performs worse is something is wrong in the BIOS so hopefully AO3 fixes it. -
Personally, I have a 330W supply and that's good enough for me! -
Still baffles me that this huge corporation closes over the weekend.
I am in the Australia/NZ region. I don't know of any specific requirement around the power supply, don't think would a big deal over this way, we don't have the same EU requirement.
My card has two of these units charged on it, not exactly cheap. One of which someone said you should just max out at 980M rather than 970M with the 4K panel ( everything else was max except for the hard drives which I will do myself), therefore I changed the order to 980M. Problem is the original order had to be cancelled and refund may take up to 21 days, then they had me place a new order with full charge on card again for 980M unit. Hence all the apprehension at this stage not seeing any progress compared to the first order placed.
Seems Dell have only bother to supply the PSU to a particular target area where their biggest sales are, and screw everyone else. If I quote the URL to the tech support over here, they just look at the bottom of the page and see the US/Canada only and just say we cant do anything for you.
Considering the 240W doesn't seem to produce a huge boost in benchmark or near nothing, I am somewhat wondering if the 240W does anything at all? I surely will be hoping that the BIOS fix could do anything, as right now it is my only hope.
I do have my other M17x R3 which does have a 240W PSU, but that will be sold if/when the newer AW15 turns up. Can't keep the 240W and cannot swap them either, will need to keep the 180W with the shipped system for whatever reason, return later sale. -

4th day from ordering, no status at all. Now into Monday afternoon here, no one can tell me what is happening either from Dell. Customer Service is poor, although there are a few good people, is like a lottery to get someone good.
Not impressed about the power supply not for anyone else outside US and Canada, which is ludicrous, we don't have the EU policy either. I certainly don't want battery drain BIOS while plugged in, to make up for the performance issues as a fix. Nice one Dell. CANCELLEDLast edited: Mar 22, 2015 -

I see that when going to the drivers download area, says Alienware 15 ( early 2015). I am pretty sure there is going to me another version if quoted early 2015. Could wait till then, hopefully they can sort all the rubbish out, then again I like not be interested anymore, and there be better other options around. -
I never understood all of the smoke and mirrors when it comes to computer releases, like they don't know exactly when they will be updating the current hardware. If I'm looking at a new car, I know about a year in advance what it coming out, the specs, and how much it will cost. I know computers progress much faster than automotive technology, but proportionally the time from flash to bang is still way shorter with computers.

Maybe it's just because I have bought 2 AWs or maybe it's because I expect more, but it seems that they do this with EVERY model. The first one is a proof of concept, the 2nd one gets the specs the 1st one should have gotten, the 3rd one gets some anecdotal upgrade, and then the 4th one is just a last ditch effort to squeeze more money out of the platform.

The alienware 17 R2 was released in EARLY 2015. The previous generation was released in 2013 with the 780M and got a refresh in 2014 with the 880M.
Intel follows a tick tock cycle. The first generation is called the Tock, in the case of the current processors 'Ivy Bridge' was the tick. Then Intel fixes some of the issues, makes a couple of changes etc and releases the Tock (in this case Hawell).
Nvidia does the same thing. AMD does the same thing. OEMs do the same thing etc.
Hell cars do exactly the same thing too. Car manufacturers introduce a redesign every 3 or so years and then refresh that design twice and then introduce a new design and so on.Last edited: Mar 22, 2015 -
I'm fine with revisions, and incremental improvements, its just the lack of customer contact and forecast that is provided. With most other products (less cellphones...they are even worse with keeping you in the dark) you know with enough warning that an upgrade or revision is in the works so you can plan your purchase better. Some poor guy here just got his AW 14, full spec, and then turned around and saw the upgraded specs on the AW website...he's over clocking his GPU but still

Meh looks like my 17R2 might be late =(
The estimated delivery date (next business day) is supposed to be 3/24/2015 but it's still showing as in production haha. So unless it ships within the next 8 hours it probably won't arrive tomorrow.
I was also supposed to get Mario Party 10 delivered today...but doesn't look like that will show up either. Just not my day for deliveries lol
Oh well, I just wish dell would explain where in the process your laptop is...just seeing "in production" for 1-2 weeks doesn't tell you much haha. -
I paraphrased the process he told me for mine (I'm in Canada so the shipping stuff is a bit different):

So order delayed to 4/3/2015....

My replacement order is being delivered today.

Yawn, this is taking ages. Took Dell a long time just to get my status working online, says "Work in Progress", whatever that means?
I am guessing that it is about 4am Saturday in China or near abouts wherever they making this. Rep told me the factory is closed during weekends. Would it be fair to say nothing is happening at all, right now for the next 2 days? -
