Alienware should issue a complete and total recall of the AW 15 and AW 17 systems that left the factory before they fixed the issue (as per Umer & Azor's Twitter)
As part of the fix, they must change the design of the heatsink to have 4 screw and uniform pressure over CPU and GPU while change their thermal paste to something reasonable.

This is like the Samsung Note 7 issue. Thermal shutdowns on gaming machines are JUST AS BAD as a Note 7 going up in flames.
Both are design flaws that produce excessive heat and hamper customers from using their devices.

Amen to that. I agree 100%.

As for the 17, it is fine. My temps are about even and if anything on avg. 1-2C degrees apart from each other.

seeing how they sent out techs to "fix" the problems, and that their parent company outsources everything im really doubting they would do a recall unless forced. (samsung did it to save face and they kind of killed their line for atleast the next year)

This does not affect the 17 like the issue with the 15.
Also they do not need to change the heat sink completely. They can fix the issue by altering the assembly, mainly the tension arm (bracket).
From the big picture it seems they are on the issue like white on rice. :)

Rather put it this way... Samsung had NO other choices than to remove the burning trash. None was allowed carry the flawed Samsung phone in a plane. Not even as baggage. An not to save face. Imagine a businessman who had to send his Samsung phone by train / boat each time he should have a job travel by plane? :D

I really don't think it's fair that Alienware is saying that less than 1% of units were affected. We all know that 99% of people aren't enthusiast types, and wouldn't even know how to look at their cores temps, much less even have an inkling to do so.

It's more like 100% of the 1% who can check their core temps that are showing the core temp disparity.

    1%

the first time they attempted to play the "we're doing our best to fix everything" the 2nd time they had no choice haha.
they had to special pick up the 2nd time around :p the shipping companies were not going to go near the exploding phones.
im a note 5 owner who was going to get the note 7, glad i didnt

im hoping for @iunlock to pick up the new razer pro to see what disaster it ends up being

Exactly. 99% of the consumers will likely ask, "what is core temp?"

One would think that Dell would have a little more brains before quoting such ridiculous numbers. Guess not...

I really am eager to get my hands on one...But that thing is way over priced and they are trying to play Apple with the mark up. However, if there was one unit that I'd love to tackle...it'd the that Razer Pro without a doubt.

Hmm maybe? maybe....never say never. :p

Well my 17r4 wasn't fine at all I had the 6700hq as well. I returned mine at least the return is hassle free.

in game after less than fifteen minutes i was get getting mid 90's on 2 cores and mid 70's on the other 2 make of that what you will.

So it's NOT exclusive to the 15 at all

I never gave mine a chance, build quality was so bad on mine so when i saw the temps skyrocket imediateley it went straight back in the box and for me the QHD panel was very bad also.

I'll give them another chance on the 13r3 and looking at the manual i would also repaste with CLU on that it looks very easy to do.

Any way to increase the powerlimit?

My card boost up to 2100mhz with 50% load an lower... with rising load the boost goes down to 1800mhz due to powerlimit :( on desktop cards we can increase it to 115%... why not on notebooks...

Yes at 50% load but when you run demanding games and the load is 100% then the thermals come into play, if they unlocked the voltage people would be cooking their chips at full load so to speak :D, plus the cooling system of the cpu is also shared across the heatpipes. and they always try to build a safety margin into it as well.

I have found with my desktop titan x pascal my card boosts / overclocks the exact same on 100% as it does on 115% power limit all 115% does is make it hotter I know these laptops are a different ball game though....

Pascal will throttle back if your GPU temperature is above 49c.

Also to add, I'm not exactly sure what's happening here but on iGPU mode my CPU is getting throttled by the reason "GT: Fuses limit". Running OCCT stress test with cpu consuming around 28 watts (testing non turbo behavior). So the TDP limit is well below.

So it's not an issue with the CPU, it's the iGPU. Strangely enough I'm not running anything graphically intensive, just staring at desktop background.

yes. I went to best buy to try it out. it's snug, but you don't have to force anything. just slides right in and zips up easy.

$100ish for a decent bag seems alright to me.

like there are some of those really hipster bags that go for $300+. of course these things will only fit your little macbook. though I admit I do like the look of mission workshop bags, i'd probably get one of those if I ever got an "ultrabook".

anyone know if there is a way to overclock the 6700HQ with raising the bus clock ? I know that has a locked multiplier but are there any options in the 17R4 bios regarding the bus overclock ? I am coming from a 3920xm cpu overclocked at 4.4ghz (M18xR2) and buying a new 2016 laptop with the 6700hq is a downgrade in cpu performance. I know that the 6820HK overclocked is as powerful as the 3920XM but I want also the 2K g-sync screen which dell decided that isn't compatible with this processor!!

It looks great, but it also shows everyone that you probably have a very expensive laptop within your bag lol. Being in the military I like all black back packs because that's the only style outside of camouflage pattern I can wear around. I don't take my laptop to work that often, but I do use my current bag a lot without my laptop. So having a good all purpose back pack that's mainly all black is a plus for me.

at this rate i could probably get the maxed gt73 for less with a black friday sale

The Dell site says the "average" weight of the 17r4 is 9.74lbs. I'm just curious if that weight also applies to the 1060 17" models? I can understand the extra weight on the 1070, but do the 1060's weigh that much too?

it's still a 17 chassis.... so I don't really see why it would weigh any different.

I would def not go 1060 on 17 though... just go 13 for that.

So, i joined the club last night with a purchase from Best Buy.. i feel like i even got lucky; LG screen, SK SSD.. not the "bad" components that people talk about. Which is why i am bummed that when i look at the temps (which admittedly, i would not have looked at without this thread), i can see that my cores are unevenly heating. 0 and 2 have reached peaks of 82/81, while 1 and 3 only touched 73/71 (according to HW info - running OCCT and 3DMark).

I was also surprised to see just how much of the machine has to be torn apart to do a repaste.. i cant say i have seen a large dell like this that makes it so much work to remove the heatsinks. I am going to get some real games on here today, as i am curious how they do, but i will be keeping a keen eye on them. I really love the machine otherwise so far, but am seriously bummed to see i have the issue; i can return it or exchange it, but then i run the lottery on getting worse parts; not to mention the other machine may be from the same batch and have the same issue anyway...

Well I would never get a 13" laptop to play games on, so that's not an option. Playing a game like Civilization on a 13" screen doesn't sound very fun to me.

This is also not my "primary" gaming machine so the 1060 is going to be just fine for me at 1080p.
