Will still have same TDP. Hardware engineers design cooling for this target. Then add in 5 or 10% extra cooling capasity for high ambient temp/dust buildup. Not much really will change. And smaller die is normally harder to cool.

I don’t recall seeing a 1060 in the cofig as placeholder. I did see a 1070 and 1080 as the placeholder. So for $2549 .... you can argue that you will get a RTX 2070 ... :)

Well, in terms of stock clocks. 9900k is almost at the limit even on stock turbo while next Ryzen or next Intel 10nm will surely have more headroom.

Not to mention if they are dropping the AW13 15 and 17 and replacing with these m15 and m17 and area 51m. They are creating their own gap in the product line.

The down side to that is there is no benefit to headroom because Ryzen is really terrible at overclocking and when you try to overclock them, their power demands and temperatures quickly escalate and go through the roof with comparative small increases in clock speeds and they hit a wall without any appreciable degree of improvement in performance. Ryzen is not a bad product, but it is not suitable for anyone interesting in overclocking. It's perfect for people that want to save a few bucks on less expensive hardware and are content to have good performance with a static configuration made for the masses as shipped by AMD.

The way that I see it, if it took for them to offer only the FHD for now to be able to release the Area 51M asap, then okay fair enough.

I also really prefer a QHD @ 100Hz+. It doesn't need to be 240000Hz lol..

I would also take a 144Hz FHD over a 60Hz 4K anyday so with all things considered.... fair enough eh....for now that is. :)

$2600 would build you a killer desktop. :p

Yup more options coming for sure... Like with all things, sometimes getting what is only available at the time that isn't ideal is the price some people pay. As I've said above, I'd rather have a 144Hz FHD over a 4K at 60Hz, which is just the biggest oxymoron for such a low Hz display to be in such a powerful machine that is intended for gaming etc...

To be fair, that's how it is with pretty much all things. We only acquire real world data form early adopters, so we should really be thanking them for bringing concrete data assuming that it was properly achieved by someone who knows what they are doing.

Clevo's aren't perfect either and we all know that there were just as much guinea pigs there as there are with any AW or other brand of products.

This reminded me of the famous credit card commercial.... "... For everything else, there's a desktop." :)

As I've mentioned in my previous post a few pages back, the reality is that for those who bring about so much hatred on something, in this case a brand and laptop; when something comes out that they finally have been wanting all along, a strange anomaly related to Stockholm syndrome kicks in to where it naturally forces them to trash on the product as a defense mechanism to justify all the negativity. Some calling it, having to crawl out of a deep hole that they've buried themselves in. Some call it being straight out childish.

It makes you think... if haters are in this very forum section that involves a product that they hate so much then what is that? LOL... seriously. That's trolling and better yet, there is an element of truth in that they are actually intrigued with some form of interest that they are here even in the first place. Common sense right?

I wish that more people could be more level headed about things and just appreciate the fact that a mainstream company like AW/Dell is leading the march in bringing about modular laptops again. This is a huge deal and something we should all be grateful for.

The simple answer is, this is the internet and there will always be haters. Having an opinion is fine, but once the context becomes hatred with immature choice of words, then that's when it becomes annoying, which often times is referred to as trolling.

Why can't we just all be happy and get along? Right?

Well to be fair, there are AW/Dell haters in here who are here because why? I don't even think there are any AW fanboys on the Clevo forums derailing threads like there are here. I just wish everyone could get along and be mature adults without using grade school words for name calling.

It's okay to have an opinion, but to bring about so much negativity on something we can capitalize on is very counter productive. We don't have to like every aspect of the Area 51M, but at least appreciate it for what it is in the march that it is leading for others to follow.

Also to be fair, a Clevo is a great choice if one is only after hardware. However, reality is reality in that if someone has the financial means to afford a system and want's something that is well built, can provide more than adequate gaming and work tasks, Clevo is not it.

Not everything is perfect. We would all be more productive if we can collectively meet eye to eye on progression for having a unified voice in demanding what we want...

Miracles do happen as we have seen with this surprise from AW/Dell. Out of all ODM's right? That shows that we should not lose hope, because good things can happen...

Well said. What other company is forward marching like AW/Dell is right now in this category right? There are a lot of things going for them right now and the way they are being open, honest and transparent about the latest offering says a lot.

In my previous post I had mentioned the following in post #268...

"... I can confirm from actually having owned many systems, testing them, modding them, benching them etc... that there is more to a system than just the size of the heat sink / pipe. Sure the obvious are the obvious, however there are much more engineering factors that need to be accounted for such as the use of air flow paths, case compartment design, tolerances to where the fins meet the heat pipe, overall design etc...

Ex. The AW17R4 when properly modded / repasted etc... cools better than it should, even with its smaller heat pipes, fans etc... Compare that to something like the upper end MSI or ASUS machines with bigger pipes, heat plate, etc... in ratio if you do the math and calculate its percentages, the bigger (approach) laptops should be cooling much more if you apply the numbers of what the smaller / tighter laptops achieve. Therefore, it's all relative to the design and there are many variables over just how big the heat pipe is.

Another Example is like with the GPU on the Asus vs AW (1080's) ... Both can reach over 210W+, but have different GPU temp numbers at the same CPU clock speeds etc... due to the design and all the factors mentioned above.

It just depends, so while we can look at something and speculate, the problem I have is that most people who do never have even driven the car is judging it like they've actually driven it. It's all speculation until we see actual real world, hands on testing...

Oh another thing is that a lot of people don't understand "efficiency," and never take that into account when it comes to the reality of things.

Just because something has a 957349257924835439584564575676756765765476546532432447W TDP, doesn't mean that it's necessarily better or efficient. It's all about efficiency. True enthusiasts should know this already... like when we tune a cpu at 5.3GHz, we're not sitting there trying to achieve the highest wattage lol. It's the complete opposite.

Ex. The AW17R4 with the 7820HK is "technically," on paper rated at 45W, which we all know is just paper data... We also know that it can reach much higher than that. I've clocked it at 5.1GHz as shown in my signature.

Anyhow, I could go for days... but I've written a book already. :) Cheers to all ... And boy you guys write fast! I come back to the desk and bam....several pages already. LOL"

    Yes that's correct. 1060 > 2060 is on the m15 and m17 models.

This may possibly change. Ryzen 1/2 was made on the Samsung Low Power 14nm process. The Ryzen 3 CPUs will be made on TSMC 7nm process. There's a possibility they'll overclock better now but we won't find out until mid 2019.

Yeah, that has been the case with first Ryzen and the refresh since they all had hard limit on achievable clock rate on air cooling. TSMC 7nm is not likely to have high peak speed despite being being far more efficient at given power, so most likely that Ryzen 3 will have similar characteristics like previous versions. Though I have to wonder if decoupling I/O from the core helps with that hard limit.

Samsung is much preferred over TSMC like what we've seen in the previous gen cards. I wish all the memory across the board and 7nm goodness was 100% Samsung only over the inferior TSMC ... It is rumored that in 2020 the 7nm for NVIDIA will be produced by Samsung. Thank goodness.. it'll be much better for us all, especially enthusiast as Samsung is much more stronger and superior all around. The only reason Samsung didn't pick up the bid for the early 7nm was due to them building new and setting up older facilities to really go all out with the smaller nm process production, so while we still have to deal with TSMC right now, Samsung will dominate in the near future with having a much larger production capacity, while producing a superior product.

Well, can't really say much about Samsung's 7nm LPP since we won't see the first product until new Snapdragon (never mind, it is TSMC) and Exynos comes out next year, but it certainly seemed promising. Even though Samsung 7nm might be superior, I am not sure if they would have been able to release Ryzen 3 this year if they went with Samsung first, since TSMC was already mass producing 7nm since last year. I think AMD already knows TSMC is not the only option so they will definitely consider Samsung as well.

It is easy to miss the MASSIVE heat sinks of the past (they certainly worked) - however those machines were literally 12-15 lbs on their own. It is easy to shrug that off, but also freaking heavy lol (and the weight is really a non issue to me personally). I remember when I got my M18x how shocked I was at its density and how solid it was - and I was coming off of an M17x r1 so not new to large laptops with a thick metal body.

Of all the laptops I have had, ever, the M17x was still my favorite (despite that TERRIBLE nvidia chipset). The M18x would have taken that spot with ease if a) it had better than a 1080p screen and b) you did not have to remove the freaking screen to repaste the CPU. The screen hinge mounting plates literally screwed over the heat sink for the CPU and GPU, atrocious design.

Interview w/Azor. Aside from his Freudian Slip about being a cheap salesman & being off by $600 on the starting price ('starts at $1949!'), listen in @12min, when you go to upgrade 'we ask that you consider buying the CPU from us, due to our specific thermal paste that will void your warranty if you do not use it'. The fact he'd be so open, honest & transparent about the latest offering says a lot re: the fastest way to void your warranty is to do your own CPU upgrade

Instead of buying their CPU, I'd much rather ID the thermal paste & buy a tube of it, slather it on before the tech got there for warranty service

Will liquid metal void warranty ... someone better tweet him

This is subjective, but, the sense of pride he has in saying 9900k will be 'allowed' to creep up to 120watts, that the system as a whole gets a 'full' 300w green light, is just, I said it in an earlier post, the difference between Lucas & a Disney Star Wars

BTW: raise your hand if you know exactly why that oddball Gen8 8700 is on the sales menu as starter CPU (& not the K model)

42 pages so far, I've yet to see trolling or people who are 'mad', all that'll happen after buyers take delivery. In the meantime it's been questions answers opinions wishful thinking etc, very civil in here unlike in other Dellware threads. The fact that the jaundiced eye sees yellow cuts both ways, for haters & fans alike. True Stockholm Syndrome would normally come from drinking the koolaid, would it not ... ... ...

Azor himself said he 'heard the complaints'; such complaints do not, do not come from BGA lovers singing kumbaya in a BGA Pride Parade echo-chamber all the live long day; if you think trolldom itself here & everywhere didn't help launch a product like this you're mistaken, where 'vomiting' thread-****ing & making things 'toxic AF' might best be described as necessary evils that can help produce so-called miracles; BGA LoveFests that wield crucifixes & douse Holy Water on LGA owners only produced more BGA mediocrity my good man, for years; like it or not so long as it's acknowledged that the right people spoke up & the right people finally listened & so here we are

Obviously everyone involved wants it to be the best product on the market, & it will be if it earns it; it doesn't surprise me in the least if forum members dwell less on what's right with 51m & more on what might be wrong with it; none of us were running around Las Vegas calling it the world's most powerful gaming laptop & because the Aliens themselves were, it should be picked apart on that basis & so should the marketing language. Moving forward, trolls & staunch critics will likely help bring about a better R2 next year packing Ice Lake, don't @ me

    @Vasudev
Hi. Alien owners have been deprived of desktop CPUs for so long now, it's likely that some in the readership may have to get acquainted with the latest Intel parts. 9600k 9700k 9900k have a soldered IHS, explained, tested & then de-lidded in this video for those interested

A delid & cleanup followed by liquid metal results in admirable cooling as shown. Members are welcome to search for info related to results achieved with a delid using the best traditional pastes as an alternative to LM. Some will decide not to delid & leave well enough alone, others buy a delid tool & DIY, some will pay for the mail-in service through Silicon Lottery for example or may wish to purchase one of their SL binned / de-lid chips https://siliconlottery.com/collections/sl/products/delid?variant=12790751494230

Member @UltraMale spared no expense & has purchased his binned delidded warrantied 9900k SL CPU from HIDEvolution w/an NBR member discount, & an excellent choice of shop to do business with

Everyone here talking about RTX 2060/70/80 DGFFs and MXMs, and here I am, just waiting for Quadro RTX upgrades on my Precision.

I really want to first try and unlock the full potential of my 1728 Pascal cores in my Quadro. Compare to the 1280 cores of the GTX 1060, the 1920 cores of the desktop GTX 1070, and the 2048 cores of the notebook GTX 1070.

I currently barely get the performance of a GTX 1060, which has nearly 500 fewer cores, just because I have memory at 7 GHz, voltage locks at 0.7 V under load, and clocks under gaming locked at ~1.3 GHz. Anyone willing to do a (paid) VBIOS mod for me?

I am confused about two things:

    1. Does this system support only 2400Mhz memory modules?

    2. Is the 1 year default warranty changed with this laptop? The basic warranty seems to support only "mail-in services" , what the hell does that mean? I seem to remember that all Dell laptops had a yearly accidental warranty and in-house parts replacement, have they scrapped it?

I don't mind being a guinea pig and pre order this system but the cheap warranty is a absolute no go for me considering I don't live in the USA. Also, 2650$ for a basic model with 8GB Ram, no SSD and a 60Hz panel is an absolute rip-off!

I wonder if the 450$ to upgrade to a 2080 makes it worth it considering the system only had a 1080p screen.

The more I think about it, the more I realise that this is a rushed product and nothing more than a marketing hype created by AW/Dell. Just look at these forums, it has got us talking. Meanwhile, over on the GT75 threads, there is hardly any talk about the new model. Excluding the "desktop" chip, MSI GT75 is a much better product that this AW A51m will ever be. The screen, the cooling and the keyboard of a GT75 is miles ahead of this one.

    What do you guys think?

This thread is barely a week old and it's already toxic AF. Reminds me of the 17R4 thread where people come only to vomit their hatred of "BGA turdbooks" and Dellieware, but never to share experience and advice (as they don't even own the device we're speaking of)...
Good job f***king this thread so fast. This is just sad.

Rushed? Frank stated this had been in development for years. The GT75 looks clunky, fat bezels etc. The GT75 chassis needs an update. I do like MSI. The GT75 was actually in my top 3 choices this year but I couldn’t pass up the beautiful look of the 51m. Also DESKTOP CPU!

Also regarding warranty, it may be different depending where you are located. My included warranty is “1 Year Hardware Service with Onsite/In-Home Service After Remote Diagnosis”.

Agreed, mostly. GT75 could use a design upgrade but it still has the best keyboard and screen you can buy on any laptop. Dell spec wide is a tempting that's for sure too.

But, where I come from, 3500$ for a laptop is huge. Absolutely huge! So, a little skepticism about the product which hasn't been tested yet is a little understandable I hope.

I mean, it will surely thermal throttle and there will be some serious power limits on the K processor. In the end, it will be up to the end user to fine tweak his system for a 3500$'s worth performance. How much will it throttle, we'll find out in a few weeks time. Till then, I'll play the waiting game until it shows up on Hidevolution.

So the more I've been reading this thread and the debate of the resolution that comes with this laptop (1080p but 144hz) my question is are there currently any gaming laptop screens out there that are 1440p+144hz combo? Sounds like that is what most people are looking for, but I'm wondering if it's just not available yet in that specific combo.

What is not available according to the AW engineers, is a higher than 1080p 17.4" pannell that can fit the 'thin bezel' configuration.

Which makes sense if you ever disassembled a 17" laptop. The metal brackets around the LCD are usually quite large.

Is the Alienware 17 not thin bezel? Looks like it comes in 1440p but 120hz..seems like that would have been a good compromise as long as it was thin bezel.

    So I found a 17 R for sale for just 800 euro's. Kinda debating if I'm going to sell my R5 for a 17 R socketed (have seen a 17 R with a 1070 modde
Maybe @Falkentyne can help you. He modified his 1070 mobile Vbios to adjust the limit. And soms tuning with clocks. I thought he cloud match or surpass desktops 1070 without TDP limit or throttling.

I've been trying to find information on that. It's sad the base model only comes with 8GB. And it's two sticks instead of one. And of course they want an arm and a leg for even the 16GB upgrade. I can't find anything on the Alienware website. And there doesn't seem to be a service manual yet. I would like to know as I'll be upgrading the ram myself. But it's a long way off so there is time.

It's caught my eye for sure. But I'm gonna wait until we get hands on it before I start splashing cash around.

Yeah i know, the forum i came across was for the complete mod, HS mod included (cause the heatsink for the 880m won't fit the 1070 without some modding)

Isn't the 9th gen LGA pre-delid? Thermal paste can be replaced and it will be replaced anyways out of the box. Using LM I don't think LM can be applied if the heatsink isn't perfect and slight imperfection will cause LM to slip off and with Dell applying LM it'll be risky 100%.
120W for CPU seems too low for LGA chips.

I think dell will reserve i9 and 2080 as top end tier otherwise people will buy 2060 and i9 w/ AGA 2080Ti to save some cash and same gaming experience.
You could put 1080ti in desktop and see how it performs on 9700K.

120W (they say 136W if GPU is not fully loaded) is too low for the i9.

i7-9700K, i7-8086K and i7-8700K is more appropriate. For gaming it should be fine. For benchmarking and pushing overclock... will depend on silicon quality, but probably not enough

Looks like the price went up by $250, at least for the highest end model.

EDIT: I bought it yesterday when it was listed at $3,999 and then I added a few things, and the $200 off coupon; looks like they want you to use the coupon to still come at $50 more expensive than originally listed. Guess it was an error.

EDIT 2: I can modify the lowest end model to have the i9, RAM, and SSD upgrades that the high end has and it comes out cheaper, wtf.

Price is going to be allover the place. Should not buy and Dell system at ticket value anyway. You can negotiate at least 10-12% off over the phone or chat

Yes, I think w/ GSYNC I think TDP will be set very low ~110W for CPU and GPU at ~150-190W.

And, then there are those of us that just expect something expensive and fancy is actually going function correctly in every way, without any underhanded performance gimping nonsense. When the numbers are way off and do not align with known facts, that raises lots of questions. What we don't know is, are the numbers mentioned wrong because of a typo in the script, or is it the "business decision" to actually use those numbers where the error exists? The former is a simple mistake in the script, whereas the latter reflects miscalculation or bad judgment. Either way, the questions about the number are totally legitimate. We don't have to wait and see what's going to happen if the latter is true. The only possible outcome is malfunction.

I think if a person already owns the eGPU and has a powerful graphics card in it, and they always game at their desk, it is rational to go big on the CPU and get the cheapest GPU offered inside of the laptop. The exception would be the fact that resale value and desirability would be dramatically diminished. If a person does not already own the eGPU and desktop graphics card, I would say skip that silly nonsense and pony up the extra cash for the best GPU available for inside of the laptop. It will run great, holds it value better, and be a lot easier to sell later with the best specs offered.

It does exist. It's just not time for distribution. I have a good friend that got up close and personal with one at CES. It throttled and hit 99°C in Cinebench R15. Maybe making a good impression at CES wasn't a priority, so they sent a a broken one. They should strongly consider reinstating their beta tester program, but this time actually listen and not turn a deaf ear to negative feedback and recommendations on what to fix that needs fixing.

@Danishblunt chill, we know this machine is on the right track going modular but it still has the unfixable cancer. when clevo and msi gets their 2080, this machine will be destroyed and left in the dust, actually CPU wise this machine is already crippled and capped.

Yes indeed. Samsung chose to take the time in order to build new manufacturing plants for the newer nm process, while converting their existing facilities to also support the newer nm process production. It was strategy for them, which will yield huge production capacity in the very near future. In regard to the release of the Ryzen 3, I agree... it would not have been possible right now due to the circumstances. But good things come to those who wait eh? :)

I also had boots on the ground at CES and to confirm, that demo unit was taken apart and put back together a million times so I'm not surprised that the temps were in the red due to the sloppy disassembly, reassembly and likely the lack of ability to properly repaste it at the show. For all we know, the temps may be in the red even on a final production unit out of the box, which in reality is to be expected. Nothing new... Especially with what it is packing in a small form factor.

We won't know for sure what the system is capable of until a proper repaste, repad and some mods are done to the system. Only then can we know for sure what it can and can not do. All my Clevo's were in the red too out of the box. It could not handle until the obvious things were addressed, therefore, we should not expect anything different with this new modular laptop packing the latest hardware.

I remember when Alienware was the only high performance notebook manufacturer that paid close attention to thermals and did everything they could to mitigate thermal issues, but I do not believe any of them do well with this any more. Like most things in life, if you want something done right, you absolutely have to do it yourself or pay someone else to do it that cares how it turns out and has the knowledge it takes to do things right. The biggest problem with notebooks is the cancer firmware and the downright diabolical nonsense they do to block people with the know-how from fixing their botched up messes. And, that will be the most telling of what this new Alienware is capable of, not the thermals. One could use a portable air conditioner to cool it for severe overclocked benching (as some of us have for many years) but if the firmware is botched and a mod cannot be applied, nothing good will ever happen. That applies to any and all notebooks, because NONE of the notebook OEMs are righteous... no, not one. Firmware is what makes or utterly ruins otherwise admirable products. Gimped firmware is a hopeless cause and a problem without any remedy. The applies equally to GPUs.

Doesn’t help much if cooling is as today. Awful cheap cooling design due chassis being created as Applebooks force the notebook manufacturers to develop firmware with all sorts of limitations. Nothing will be changed before the cooling is good enough and in place. And the trend has gone opposite way! No point in purchase nice looking gloves if you lack hands!

Well said and you do make a good point. Simply put, the limitations exist due to all the many reasons we are well aware of. The majority of the companies don't care about extreme enthusiasts like guys like us, because we are the minority. (There are exceptions of course, but in terms of the latest Area 51M, we have yet to see... which is why I am reserving judgement until I can fully test one myself with all the proper measures that I do to get the system to run at its peak.)

The issues regarding firmware are all by design, ignorance, lack of knowledge, laziness, sloppiness or are left at the mercy of someone else providing it, which causes other issues of its own. It is a hot mess and it has been for most companies; not just AW/Dell. The thing with AW/Dell is that at least they've been actively involved in making changes to it from user input to some degree, while other ODM's remain silent.

However, any company that releases a product geared toward true enthusiasts and advertises it as having no compromise needs to live up to their word. For extreme overclockers, this is where Clevo is a better choice for purely the hardware, less the premium price AND because of the luxury of what Prema provides. Only because of Prema, Clevo got lucky with slipping by with having the right combo of hardware + software, otherwise it'd be in the same exact boat as all other laptops that suffer from software limitations.

I'm sure you're aware, but for those who are reading, you have to also realize that most of the consumer base are regular gamers. Also, most of those people at the companies are just regular gamers (at best) as they are not extreme over-clockers or remotely close to someone who you'd call an enthusiast. This is why the things we gripe about (things that limit the system) are not the top priority for the lads at the companies. They are after profit and the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to get it to please the share holders... it's business... nothing new.

On the bright side, we have sparks like the Area 51M that brings back hope for the enthusiasts. This system is not meant to be a benching beater, rather it is one to provide the end user a quality built system where they can have an enjoyable gaming/work experience. The Area 51M will surely provide that.

Just because it can't do Mach 1000, doesn't mean that it is a bad system. Also, when comparing these dtr systems, the category is very small so aside to Clevo, AW is really paving the way among the mainstream brands that everyone knows about and uses.

I do think that we have a unique situation here in that AW is being pretty transparent about everything so far and from what I can see, if there ever was a sliver of chance of our voices being heard regarding our wants for the Area 51M, I think we are closer than ever from getting our wishes answered. The release of the Area 51M alone is a good start... perhaps it wouldn't hurt to give it the benefit of the doubt to have some hope in them fixing what may need to be fixed.

    We shall see...

We'll see benchmark and thermal results once its dispatched by HID to a person who lives in dubai and hopefully AW drivers and firmware list will be updated frequently!

And I'll asume there is no picture or video about it.

As far as consumer goes, it doesn't exist yet.

Imagine if the clevo fanboys would stop putting their notebook with ridiculous mods against stock notebooks and calling stock notebooks trash because they are little slower but offer way more overall package.

Also Prema mod doesn't fix lots of things. I have an old P375SM-A, it's still bugged, even with Premamod.
