Will still have same TDP. Hardware engineers design cooling for this target. Then add in 5 or 10% extra cooling capasity for high ambient temp/dust buildup. Not much really will change. And smaller die is normally harder to cool.

Not to mention if they are dropping the AW13 15 and 17 and replacing with these m15 and m17 and area 51m. They are creating their own gap in the product line.

I also really prefer a QHD @ 100Hz+. It doesn't need to be 240000Hz lol..
I would also take a 144Hz FHD over a 60Hz 4K anyday so with all things considered.... fair enough eh....for now that is.
Clevo's aren't perfect either and we all know that there were just as much guinea pigs there as there are with any AW or other brand of products.
It makes you think... if haters are in this very forum section that involves a product that they hate so much then what is that? LOL... seriously. That's trolling and better yet, there is an element of truth in that they are actually intrigued with some form of interest that they are here even in the first place. Common sense right?
I wish that more people could be more level headed about things and just appreciate the fact that a mainstream company like AW/Dell is leading the march in bringing about modular laptops again. This is a huge deal and something we should all be grateful for.
The simple answer is, this is the internet and there will always be haters. Having an opinion is fine, but once the context becomes hatred with immature choice of words, then that's when it becomes annoying, which often times is referred to as trolling.
Why can't we just all be happy and get along? Right?
It's okay to have an opinion, but to bring about so much negativity on something we can capitalize on is very counter productive. We don't have to like every aspect of the Area 51M, but at least appreciate it for what it is in the march that it is leading for others to follow.
Also to be fair, a Clevo is a great choice if one is only after hardware. However, reality is reality in that if someone has the financial means to afford a system and want's something that is well built, can provide more than adequate gaming and work tasks, Clevo is not it.
Not everything is perfect. We would all be more productive if we can collectively meet eye to eye on progression for having a unified voice in demanding what we want...
Miracles do happen as we have seen with this surprise from AW/Dell. Out of all ODM's right? That shows that we should not lose hope, because good things can happen...
In my previous post I had mentioned the following in post #268...
"... I can confirm from actually having owned many systems, testing them, modding them, benching them etc... that there is more to a system than just the size of the heat sink / pipe. Sure the obvious are the obvious, however there are much more engineering factors that need to be accounted for such as the use of air flow paths, case compartment design, tolerances to where the fins meet the heat pipe, overall design etc...
Ex. The AW17R4 when properly modded / repasted etc... cools better than it should, even with its smaller heat pipes, fans etc... Compare that to something like the upper end MSI or ASUS machines with bigger pipes, heat plate, etc... in ratio if you do the math and calculate its percentages, the bigger (approach) laptops should be cooling much more if you apply the numbers of what the smaller / tighter laptops achieve. Therefore, it's all relative to the design and there are many variables over just how big the heat pipe is.
Another Example is like with the GPU on the Asus vs AW (1080's) ... Both can reach over 210W+, but have different GPU temp numbers at the same CPU clock speeds etc... due to the design and all the factors mentioned above.
It just depends, so while we can look at something and speculate, the problem I have is that most people who do never have even driven the car is judging it like they've actually driven it. It's all speculation until we see actual real world, hands on testing...
Oh another thing is that a lot of people don't understand "efficiency," and never take that into account when it comes to the reality of things.
Just because something has a 957349257924835439584564575676756765765476546532432447W TDP, doesn't mean that it's necessarily better or efficient. It's all about efficiency. True enthusiasts should know this already... like when we tune a cpu at 5.3GHz, we're not sitting there trying to achieve the highest wattage lol. It's the complete opposite.
Ex. The AW17R4 with the 7820HK is "technically," on paper rated at 45W, which we all know is just paper data... We also know that it can reach much higher than that. I've clocked it at 5.1GHz as shown in my signature.
Anyhow, I could go for days... but I've written a book already. Cheers to all ... And boy you guys write fast! I come back to the desk and bam....several pages already. LOL"alaskajoel, corteen, IXVIXXII and 2 others like this. -

It is easy to miss the MASSIVE heat sinks of the past (they certainly worked) - however those machines were literally 12-15 lbs on their own. It is easy to shrug that off, but also freaking heavy lol (and the weight is really a non issue to me personally). I remember when I got my M18x how shocked I was at its density and how solid it was - and I was coming off of an M17x r1 so not new to large laptops with a thick metal body.
Of all the laptops I have had, ever, the M17x was still my favorite (despite that TERRIBLE nvidia chipset). The M18x would have taken that spot with ease if a) it had better than a 1080p screen and b) you did not have to remove the freaking screen to repaste the CPU. The screen hinge mounting plates literally screwed over the heat sink for the CPU and GPU, atrocious design. -
Instead of buying their CPU, I'd much rather ID the thermal paste & buy a tube of it, slather it on before the tech got there for warranty service
Will liquid metal void warranty ... someone better tweet him
This is subjective, but, the sense of pride he has in saying 9900k will be 'allowed' to creep up to 120watts, that the system as a whole gets a 'full' 300w green light, is just, I said it in an earlier post, the difference between Lucas & a Disney Star Wars
BTW: raise your hand if you know exactly why that oddball Gen8 8700 is on the sales menu as starter CPU (& not the K model)
42 pages so far, I've yet to see trolling or people who are 'mad', all that'll happen after buyers take delivery. In the meantime it's been questions answers opinions wishful thinking etc, very civil in here unlike in other Dellware threads. The fact that the jaundiced eye sees yellow cuts both ways, for haters & fans alike. True Stockholm Syndrome would normally come from drinking the koolaid, would it not ... ... ...
Azor himself said he 'heard the complaints'; such complaints do not, do not come from BGA lovers singing kumbaya in a BGA Pride Parade echo-chamber all the live long day; if you think trolldom itself here & everywhere didn't help launch a product like this you're mistaken, where 'vomiting' thread-****ing & making things 'toxic AF' might best be described as necessary evils that can help produce so-called miracles; BGA LoveFests that wield crucifixes & douse Holy Water on LGA owners only produced more BGA mediocrity my good man, for years; like it or not so long as it's acknowledged that the right people spoke up & the right people finally listened & so here we are
Obviously everyone involved wants it to be the best product on the market, & it will be if it earns it; it doesn't surprise me in the least if forum members dwell less on what's right with 51m & more on what might be wrong with it; none of us were running around Las Vegas calling it the world's most powerful gaming laptop & because the Aliens themselves were, it should be picked apart on that basis & so should the marketing language. Moving forward, trolls & staunch critics will likely help bring about a better R2 next year packing Ice Lake, don't @ me

Everyone here talking about RTX 2060/70/80 DGFFs and MXMs, and here I am, just waiting for Quadro RTX upgrades on my Precision.
I really want to first try and unlock the full potential of my 1728 Pascal cores in my Quadro. Compare to the 1280 cores of the GTX 1060, the 1920 cores of the desktop GTX 1070, and the 2048 cores of the notebook GTX 1070.
I currently barely get the performance of a GTX 1060, which has nearly 500 fewer cores, just because I have memory at 7 GHz, voltage locks at 0.7 V under load, and clocks under gaming locked at ~1.3 GHz. Anyone willing to do a (paid) VBIOS mod for me? -

I am confused about two things:
1. Does this system support only 2400Mhz memory modules?
2. Is the 1 year default warranty changed with this laptop? The basic warranty seems to support only "mail-in services" , what the hell does that mean? I seem to remember that all Dell laptops had a yearly accidental warranty and in-house parts replacement, have they scrapped it?
I don't mind being a guinea pig and pre order this system but the cheap warranty is a absolute no go for me considering I don't live in the USA. Also, 2650$ for a basic model with 8GB Ram, no SSD and a 60Hz panel is an absolute rip-off!
I wonder if the 450$ to upgrade to a 2080 makes it worth it considering the system only had a 1080p screen.
The more I think about it, the more I realise that this is a rushed product and nothing more than a marketing hype created by AW/Dell. Just look at these forums, it has got us talking. Meanwhile, over on the GT75 threads, there is hardly any talk about the new model. Excluding the "desktop" chip, MSI GT75 is a much better product that this AW A51m will ever be. The screen, the cooling and the keyboard of a GT75 is miles ahead of this one.
What do you guys think?

Wow
This thread is barely a week old and it's already toxic AF. Reminds me of the 17R4 thread where people come only to vomit their hatred of "BGA turdbooks" and Dellieware, but never to share experience and advice (as they don't even own the device we're speaking of)...
Good job f***king this thread so fast. This is just sad.Last edited: Jan 11, 2019MogRules, alaskajoel, iunlock and 3 others like this. -

Also regarding warranty, it may be different depending where you are located. My included warranty is “1 Year Hardware Service with Onsite/In-Home Service After Remote Diagnosis”.Last edited: Jan 11, 2019 -

But, where I come from, 3500$ for a laptop is huge. Absolutely huge! So, a little skepticism about the product which hasn't been tested yet is a little understandable I hope.
I mean, it will surely thermal throttle and there will be some serious power limits on the K processor. In the end, it will be up to the end user to fine tweak his system for a 3500$'s worth performance. How much will it throttle, we'll find out in a few weeks time. Till then, I'll play the waiting game until it shows up on Hidevolution.

So the more I've been reading this thread and the debate of the resolution that comes with this laptop (1080p but 144hz) my question is are there currently any gaming laptop screens out there that are 1440p+144hz combo? Sounds like that is what most people are looking for, but I'm wondering if it's just not available yet in that specific combo.

i7-9700K, i7-8086K and i7-8700K is more appropriate. For gaming it should be fine. For benchmarking and pushing overclock... will depend on silicon quality, but probably not enough -
Looks like the price went up by $250, at least for the highest end model.
EDIT: I bought it yesterday when it was listed at $3,999 and then I added a few things, and the $200 off coupon; looks like they want you to use the coupon to still come at $50 more expensive than originally listed. Guess it was an error.
EDIT 2: I can modify the lowest end model to have the i9, RAM, and SSD upgrades that the high end has and it comes out cheaper, wtf. -

We won't know for sure what the system is capable of until a proper repaste, repad and some mods are done to the system. Only then can we know for sure what it can and can not do. All my Clevo's were in the red too out of the box. It could not handle until the obvious things were addressed, therefore, we should not expect anything different with this new modular laptop packing the latest hardware.alaskajoel, Aroc, judal57 and 5 others like this. -

The issues regarding firmware are all by design, ignorance, lack of knowledge, laziness, sloppiness or are left at the mercy of someone else providing it, which causes other issues of its own. It is a hot mess and it has been for most companies; not just AW/Dell. The thing with AW/Dell is that at least they've been actively involved in making changes to it from user input to some degree, while other ODM's remain silent.
However, any company that releases a product geared toward true enthusiasts and advertises it as having no compromise needs to live up to their word. For extreme overclockers, this is where Clevo is a better choice for purely the hardware, less the premium price AND because of the luxury of what Prema provides. Only because of Prema, Clevo got lucky with slipping by with having the right combo of hardware + software, otherwise it'd be in the same exact boat as all other laptops that suffer from software limitations.
I'm sure you're aware, but for those who are reading, you have to also realize that most of the consumer base are regular gamers. Also, most of those people at the companies are just regular gamers (at best) as they are not extreme over-clockers or remotely close to someone who you'd call an enthusiast. This is why the things we gripe about (things that limit the system) are not the top priority for the lads at the companies. They are after profit and the fastest, easiest and cheapest way to get it to please the share holders... it's business... nothing new.
On the bright side, we have sparks like the Area 51M that brings back hope for the enthusiasts. This system is not meant to be a benching beater, rather it is one to provide the end user a quality built system where they can have an enjoyable gaming/work experience. The Area 51M will surely provide that.
Just because it can't do Mach 1000, doesn't mean that it is a bad system. Also, when comparing these dtr systems, the category is very small so aside to Clevo, AW is really paving the way among the mainstream brands that everyone knows about and uses.
I do think that we have a unique situation here in that AW is being pretty transparent about everything so far and from what I can see, if there ever was a sliver of chance of our voices being heard regarding our wants for the Area 51M, I think we are closer than ever from getting our wishes answered. The release of the Area 51M alone is a good start... perhaps it wouldn't hurt to give it the benefit of the doubt to have some hope in them fixing what may need to be fixed.
We shall see...Last edited: Jan 12, 2019alaskajoel, Aroc, VoodooChild and 7 others like this. -

NEW!! Alienware Area-51M LAPTOP!! (to replace alienware 15 and 17)
