Have D420 here and was thinking if it's possible to use WWAN slot for any other mini pci-e cards like SSD or video decoder. Now Dell docs state not to mix WLAn and WWAN cards between their assigned slots. So have anyone tried to ?

I really wouldn't recommend this since there will surely be negative outcomes.

Your computer wont function since that area was made for that specific type of card, you might get bsods if you try to put some other kind of wifi card into the slot.

    nightmear321,

Do you have some sort of reference or any reason to state the fact that it "nothing good will come of it"?

From what I see it appears this is a normal Mini PCIE slot and can accept what ever device that will fit. For example, that slot is compatible with the Intel Turbo memory/Flash Cache and I wouldn't be surprised if other SSD cards also worked fine in the slot.

You can see that you are able to use the WWAN slot for that card here:

Let us know when you toss something in there and what kind of speeds you get.

I think that, if there are limitations it is coded in the bios.

The slots are specific for different functions. If you put a PCI-E SSD mini card in there it will not work. The slot does not have a mux to support eSATA and other items that are needed to make it work properly.

    bumpity bump :)

upgraded my wi-fi to Intel's wireless N card and decided to risc my old one. plugged it into wwan slot, turned cellular on in bios and got online :D
so i guess for D420 the wwan slot is compatible with all mini pci-e cards.
