I have a Dell Latituide E5520 laptop currently with 8GB RAM (2 x 4GB) and want to upgrade to 16GB RAM as I run lots of VM's.

Crucial have some DDR3 PC3 that will fit my laptop - but will it recognise that amount? Their sales staff say no and their website says no, but in my experience, the laptop often will. I have the latest BIOS installed but I can't find any info on Google or Dell's website.

    Any ideas?

Pretty much all the Sandy Bridge notebooks will accept 16GB's of RAM, even if it's not advertised. My previous Vostro 3450 and the E6220 in my sig accept 16GB's of RAM with no issue, so I'm not sure why the E5520 wouldn't as well. :)

Hi glambertuk, have you successfully installed the 16GB into your e5520?

;) Indeed, but because it's the only place I could find regarding successful installation of these 16 gigs I had to be sure.

Thanks. Extra memory is always welcome since my company has given me a development machine with 4GB of ram and a 32-bit Win7.

check your cpu support at ark.intel.com. It will tell you what it will support.

Except ark.intel.com isn't always accurate. It lists the i7-920xm as supporting only 8GB, but it can do 16GB in 4x4 config at the very least. Sandy Bridge, to my knowledge, supports 16GB.

Thanks for the pointers. I already checked my cpu before. It's the i5-2410M and it supports 16 gigs of ram. Hopefully Intel's site is accurate on this...
