Hey Precision users, why did you choose a Dell Precision over an Thinkpad/Elitebooks? I ask because I am expecting get either a m4700 or m6700 around September or October.

I don't speak for others. For me, personally, it's the warranty.& support.

I'm particularly interested in a 17" machine so the Thinkpad is out since they stopped the W7XX series.

I did take a hard look at the Elitebook but the Precision offers some bonus technologies that I'm interested in (mSATA, Optimus, TPM module). Some of those might have made it into the new Elitebooks that are launching this month — I haven't checked yet. On top of that, echoing dejazz, I've always had a first-class warranty/support experience with Dell.

    [Edit - update]
Looks like TPM and mSATA made it into the HP Elitebook 8770w. Not sure about Optimus yet (they're not shipping with NVIDIA cards yet).

I'd say the only real competitor is HP with their Elitebooks. But I personally hate their new keyboards and the fact that they only use a single fan cooling for both CPU and GPU - their cooling is significantly subpar to that of the Precisions. Also, Dell offers more features (extra storage, more connectivity, etc)

I like Dell's service, the m4600 has great cooling that makes it a decent gamer if you want to play a few games with it.

I can have 2 hard rives and one msata drive installed

    4 DIMM slots

picked mine up (refurb) for $800.00

Standard 3 year Next Buisness Day Warranty.

    Dude it's A Dell :) lol

I'm in the same boat. I actually prefer the HP design (except that light grey area under the screen), but, recently, I'm in the situation where sometimes I need up to 2.5 hrs of battery life while working, thus some hybrid graphics switching is mandatory and HP doesn't seem to care to support it. Though, I wish I don't need that so I could get an IPS screen.

When I purchased my m6600 there were no 17" thinkpads & the HP's didn't have sata3. Things may have changed since then but at the time the m6600 was the best value for my needs.
