I have the 14-incher with 1440x900. But I feel quite more comfortable with the 90DPI of my 22" screen (1680x1050).

In my oppinion 120 DPI is already too much. But since there was no option for a LED-backlit 1280x800 screen when I bought my E6400, there was akshully no alternative. The 90DPI of my 22" screen are more convenient for all kinds of text based work.

I have the exact same preferences. Unfortunately 1680x1050 is rare these days so 1440x900 like another person said above is the next best thing on a 15 inch.

I have an E6400 at 1440x900 and I absolutely love it.
Text is very crisp and it's the perfect size for viewing two side-by-side pages of a pdf in full-screen.
No eye strain. Though I wouldn't recommend to someone with less-than-perfect vision (yay for contacts).

I returned a dell studio 17 in part due to the 1440x900 resolution and smaller text/icons etc. Yes I tried all the software adjustments but nothing seem to work very well. On a recreational machine I have no need to have multiple windows open so it makes no logical sense to me to have a bunch of screen real estate and super small fonts/menus/icons.

Does the vista scaling you are talking about scale up everything on the screen proportionally, including menu bars in FF or IE, task bars, scroll bars etc?

most things it does right, but some (mostly pop up boxes that arent necessarily meant to be maximized) have missing/half visible buttons. i put my dpi to 110 or something, seems like a good compromise.

I fell over this thread in the "Recent Discussions" to the left.

The computer I'm typing this on is 15.4" and has a resolution of 1440X900. I realise the actual screen is an inch bigger than the e6400, but the stuff on-screen is simply too big. I took a look at my settings, and it whereever possible I have made the text smaller.
This is why my next computer (I was hoping it would have arrived this weekend) is 1440x900 again, but this time on a 12.1 inch screen. Although, I figure this is at the very limit of how small I want "stuff" to be. I believe I calculated the 12.1 inch to be 140 DPI.
