Why is that? I would have thought that the computer would just use as much memory as it was rated for, leaving the rest unused.

Intel claims the PM965 and GM965 support 4GB Max memory. Here is the link to the Intel website: http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=28116

Based on my experience with Dell systems I would say there is a good chance the system will not boot with 8GB's installed.

Thanks for the help, guess this isn't a loss since i dint need any more extra ram since i do mostly web browsing and a occasional game every now and then.

Yes, that will highly depend if the BIOS has the ability to detect more than 4GB RAM and put it to use. The Santa Rosa XPS and Inspiron systems, on the other hand, uses a GM965/PM965 chipset respectively, and with the newest BIOS update allows more than 4GB. (Both of my rigs, 6 & 8 GB respectively. See sig)

An unorthodox solution but well I guess the only way is to try it out yourself if it works like I did for my 1720. But since you do occasional gaming and web browsing then having 6 - 8GB is an overkill.

    Hope this helps.

    PS, V1500... Is that a Vostro 1500?

Dells wont boot if the BIOS doesnt support the Maximum RAM

Its was confirmed when they tried 4x2GB modules on the XPS M1330. One of the BIOS's could boot 8gb, but a newer BIOS could only boot 6gb for some reason. It just wouldnt turn on with 8gb unless you reflashed back.

^ Actaully, there were some people who had BIOS A14 working. BIOS A15 for the M1330 works with 8GB. Not so sure why A14 weirdly wouldn't work on some machines though. I had a friend who wanted to have 8GB in his M1330, but I told him to skip A14 and wait for A15 to be released due to that some time back. A13 and A15 works with 8GB.

Same applies to my 1720 - it wouldn't boot if it had 8GB in it as well.
