It may be nothing, but I originally got about 5400 in 3DMark06 with the stock drivers and clocks for my 1700M. Overclocking I got 6100 but my temperatures have never gone anywhere near the 90 degrees in that review. I wonder whether Dell has downclocked something somewhere to keep temperatures down...

Default clock speeds are 625/800/1250. I set them to 700/900/1500 to get 6100 in 3DMark06.

    ??? really?

The FX 770 hits about 7000 when i set at 600/900/1600...gets up to 81c but that's it. In actual performance that means around 20-28fps in Far Cry 2 running at 1680x1050 everything at med/high. Runs smooth enough for a good play. L4D runs pretty smooth too.

The overheating issue is also dealt with in detail and i think me and
I♥RAM amongst others pushed it as far as possible there.

:| i knew people were saying that the FX1700 wasnt worth the extra money, but i dint expect its performance to be virtually identical to the FX770!!

there's quite an extensive thread on overclocking which i started a while back
