I am particularly interested to know the brand Dell uses for the 200GB 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor in the Latitude E6400.

    Anyone? Thanks! :)

I've seen Dell use Seagate quite often in the past. I read Hitachi 7K200 does not come with FFS. So it makes it likely Dell is using Seagate 7200.2 or a Toshiba.

Although I did read about someone getting a Hitachi while they had ordered FFS.

By the way, if you could get 160GB 7200rpm it's probably faster because it may be the newer generation with 160GB on one platter.

My newly arrived 5400rpm 160GB is the Samsung HM160HI. It's a good performer since the 160GB is on one platter.

That doesn't answer your question about the 7200rpm FFS, but it adds to the list of sources that Dell uses.

Dell uses the cheapest source at any given order time. Hitachi, WD, Samsung ..... you'll find them all at various speeds and sizes.

    Thanks for all the input.

Platter means the number after the dot.? say 7200.2 means 2 platters?

With Seagate, the number after the dot is the "version". This year's model may be 7200.9. The next model released will be 7200.10 (which I think has been released in the desktop drive world).

Right. The 'Momentus 7200.3' is the current generation laptop harddrive with 7200rpm. 7200.2 is the older generation.

With Momentus 5400 they're already up to 5400.5.

so,why do you think that the 160GB 7200 can be the newer 3-th generation and the 200GB is the older?Don't they have 200GB 7200 Momentus 3-th generation model?
This with the hard drive is a really tricky moment. In the reviews they state that the newer 5400 drives are as fast as the older 7200 models. So you never know if the upgrade to 7200 is worth it, because you don't know what brand, model and generation hard drive you'll get.

Thanks for clearing that version number thing of Seagate HDDs.

I tried searching WD and Toshiba, though they have "free fall sensor" tech, doesn't seem to have 200GB 7200rpm model. I just checked Hitachi and their 2.5 7200rpm drives doesn't seem to have this "ff sensor" thing. Samsung doesn't seem to have 200GB and up 2.5 7200rpm drives.
(please feel free to correct me with regards to the info above.)

So, I guess it's a Seagate that I'm getting, which is what I am really hoping I'll get...
