I just bought a Vostro 1500 with a T5460 1.6GHz and a 8600M GT. I don't know if it was a mistake or what, but I got an 8600 with 512mb when the order form only said 256mb. Anyhow, after playing the Crysis and COD4 demos "okay", I'm thirsty for a little more performance. I'm thinking I'd like to upgrade the CPU to a T7500 GHz or possibly 2.4 GHz T7700. I know this laptop model is still relatively new, but has anyone here ever upgrades the cpu on a 1500 before? Is it incredibly tedious. I havent installed a processor since Socket A, so I'm a little leary about just opening this thing up and going to town.? Any helpful information or links would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You have a 256 Mb 8600m GT with an additional 256 Turbocache. Upgrading the processor is not going to help with game performance.

Lithius is right. I've owned a G1s with T7500 and now own a Vostro 1500 with 1.4Ghz CPU and the gaming performance doesn't seem to be affected by CPU. It seems like it was affected mostly due to the slower video card that Vostro has compared to Asus G1s-A1.

How much RAM do you have? That could improve performance and is easy to install.

why dont u try to open all the small compartment under the laptop, it might show u the CPU right under it.

The Dell E1420 has the easiest access to CPU ive ever seen. Open the compartment under it and tada.. here is the CPU heatsink. Upgrade at ease.

Gaming performance is at top for that 8600gt if u want better quality only go for desktop ones. U can ask for much in a small factor laptop.

Newer core 2 duo is fast enough to handle games even with one @ 1.5 or 1.6ghz . The core thing is the gfx card that decides.

Few years ago games requires more CPU power , nowadays the gfx is the core.

You are probably fine with 2 but 3 would not hurt if you are looking for something because your graphics card is taking 256 MB of your RAM so you only have about 1.75 GB to work with. If you have two 1 GB sticks I would stick with what you have but if you have one 2GB stick buying another may help. If you do not remember what you have cpu-z is a great way to find out.

T7800 is also a nice option, which runs a bit cooler(max core temp 70C) than T5470(max 72C) in vostro 1400.(T7500 runs about max 66-67C in 1400)

if you want better game performance, you :

    1. Get new drivers for your card (169.04 are great).
    2. Overclock your card.

You dont go around buying expensive cpu's because it wont make a difference
