I bought my Vostro about a year ago. I went to burn a CD today and it was saying something about not having the proper equipment. Went to my My Computer and sure enough, there is no DVD drive listed?

Haven't used it in awhile, so I don't know how long it has been this way. Maybe I need to reinstall the drivers?

Dell lists that I have a: FW733 ASSEMBLY..., DVD+/-RW..., 8X, IDE (INTEGRATED DRIVE ELECTRONICS) ..., HITACHI LG DATA STORAGE..., CGS

Which drivers Do I need? Any suggestions?

    Thaks in advance!

    Jb

Have you checked your device manager to see if there is an error for the drive?

You could also remove it to see what type it is. It is easy to take out.

Take it out and put it back in a few times just to clean the interface. If it still aint showing it sounds like the drive has failed.

I'll have to take it out at some point when I get a chance. The thing will spin. I can here it working, but no indication that the disc is being read.

Does your vostro have CD/DVD burning software such as Nero or something similar? That may be the culprit

I would suggest to try and boot from the drive that way you eliminate any software or OS conflicts. ;)

If you can't boot your system from the OS disc then I would try cleaning the lens on the drive.

Well, Dell is sending me a new drive to throw in. Apparently it was bad enough where they think I need a new one. Hopefully I'll have it within a week or so.
