Nice review and an absolutely beautiful laptop.

I just picked up a Latitude, but I'm kinda wishing I got the Precision.

By the time I configured an M4600 with the specs I wanted, easily hit 4-5 grand with Pro Care >__<

Nope I don't agree on the CPU & GPU fan location. The bigger one on the right in the picture is CPU fan.
I tested with prime95, temperature hitting 90C, hot air coming our from the left and the fan is spinning fast. GPU is not having load and temperature about 46C, and the fan at the right remains quite and cool.

When the bottom case is in opened position, the left-right position also swapped, so the left side fan during normal use position become right side in opened case position, which is the CPU.

About the power adapter, if Dell has designed 240W adapter with half the thickness, why still come out with the thick 210W adapter?

    The 210W adapter is approximately 19.8cm x 9.8cm x 4.5cm = 873cm3

    M4600 180W = 15.3cm x 7.3cm x 3.0cm = 335cm3

Woot the volume difference is more than double.

Is somebody able to compare a display with a brightness of 300 cd to the new M4600 IPS in a picture? The IPS screen seems to be very nice, but i'm still thinking about to buy the WLed one because of the higher brightness specs.

Awesome review. This post made me register just to commend the OP on the review. Well done.

I am very close to making a purchase decision on the M4600. Just a couple of questions:

    a) Is the IPS display available in Canada?

    b) I am worried that the 1080x1920 display would result in a too small of a display and cause my wife to get pissed! Should I even consider anything lower?

    c) does 1600MHz RAM make any noticeable difference? The wiki page (Sandy Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) states "*Memory: Up to
    dual channel DDR3-1333 MHz"

    d) I plan to get the dock (eport plus so I can use dual monitors). Can anyone confirm that if you don't use a 210w p/s that the M4600 clocks itself down? Does the dock indeed come with the 210w?

    e) I don't understand the advantage of the Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 802.11a/b/g/n Half Mini Card over the Dell Wireless™ 1501 802.11b/g/n Half Mini Card, can anyone clarify?

    f) 128GB SATA3 SSD over a 320GB 7200 rpm?

    thanks!

    Yes it is. :)

It is true that the font is small, I asked for 1600x900 but the sale person said no such configuration available. However Win7 is able to adjust the font size easily.

I can't answer this at the moment, my 1600Mhz RAM will only arrive next Tuesday.

I have been using the M4600 180W at dock port for 2 weeks and it worked absolutely fine. The dock will come with 210W adapter.

Sorry, not sure about that. I know only little about those 2 and roughly as below:-
    - Ultimate-N 6300 uses 3 antenna vs Dell 1501 2 antenna for higher throughput and coverage.
    - N-6300 max speed 450Mbps with proper setup vs Dell 1501 72.2Mbps
    - N-6300 is Intel premium product while Dell 1501 is a low cost card.
    - N-6300 supports 2.4 Ghz and 5Ghz while dell 1501 only 2.4Ghz.

If you are asking about performance, yes it is a great enhancement but the storage space may not be sufficient. However you may consider having both by using 128Gb Mini SATA SSD "PLUS" the 320Gb 7200rpm as 2nd hardisk, then that is a perfect match.
If your question is about the price alone, 320Gb 7200rpm is the clear winner ;)

Don't waste money on "faster" memory. Purely marketing and zero real performance benefit. The intel card is technically better but the difference is only really realized in a busy network. The ssd is a lot faster and more durable but obviously more expensive and less capacity so it depends on your budget and needs.
