Thanks for the nice review. Can you please put a photo of the bottom sticker of the M4600 180W power adapter? I need the model number so I can search for it online for my M6400 (I have the 210W behemoth).

Your M6400 will not run at full performance when using anything but the 210W, or greater, power adapter.

I know some people with fully-specced M6400s had problems with the 150W power adapters under full load, but I think 180W might just cut it; I assume that 210W is projected for the dock (e.g. as HP 8710W came with both a 150W adapter for the notebook and a 180W to be used with the dock) so there should be some extra power there.

BTW, that's a pretty generalized statement since you don't know the exact specs of my particular configuration.

Really doesn't matter what your configuration is, the system will detect a power adapter that is not 210W, or greater. When that happens the system defaults to a different power mode to ensure it does not cause the power adapter to fail. Safety thing. If you know that what you are doing will not tax the system then you should be ok.

This is completely new to me. I might be wrong, but I seem to remember people discussing how they tested various M6400 units with weaker PSUs in the M6400 thread and some could get by with a 150W adapter without down-throttling.

The IT department unpackaged my M4600 and docking station, but my understanding is that the M4600 came with an FA180PM111 power adapter which outputs 19.5 V and 9.23 A (180 W) and the docking station came with a much larger power adapter which I believe is rated at 210 W.

Just to be clear for the record, are you saying that the M4600 will not operate at full speed with the factory supplied 180 W power adapter? Does that apply to all configurations of the M4600 or only units with a specific configuration (e.g., processor).

Or does the reference apply to the M6400? I originally thought it was a typo, but then I noticed the post it was in reference to. Sorry for the confusion. I thought the thread was about the M4600.

They are talking about the old M6400 (17", big brother of M4400).

Thanks. I managed to find it on Dell Accessories pages in Europe, but it's pretty expensive. I hope that the model number from this photo will be helpful to search for it on the internet from some resellers and alike.

It's interesting to note that it doesn't have the family denomination (e.g. like the 210W PA-7E or the 240W PA-9E).
