    Hi,

does anyone else have issues with backlight bleed with Dell's glossy laptop screens? I got the glossy FHD touchscreen (with the E7440), and the bleed is significant.

Pic taken with a black video on fullscreen, at full display brightness. I adjusted the pic's colors in Photoshop to represent my subjective impression of the bleed.

I have little experience with glossy screens. My last laptop was a Latitude E6420 with a horrible screen, which there was no better option for available. So I didn't bother complaining.

But now with this beautiful FHD screen with its great colors, it does bother me.

Should I get it replaced? Would the replacement likely have similar issues?

    Thanks!

MatzeXXX, I have the same problem with my E7440 touch and my E7240 touch. I contacted my rep about it and he said I could return for a replacement, but the touchscreen versions have such a production delay that I'd be wait till January to get one back. On top of that I'm not confident I would get a better-performing replacement anyway. I'm wondering if I can just get the screen replaced under the ProSupport warranty, maybe in a few months after they've worked out the kinks? I've never had a touchscreen laptop before so I don't know if this is expected.

    Thanks for your reply!

I myself would only order a replacement if I'd get it under the pro support, which brings a technician to my office the next day. It propably won't be a problem to do that, but like you I worry the replacement might have the same issue. During everyday use it doesn't bother me at all, but when editing video or watching movies it is annoying.

I placed a dispatch with ProSupport yesterday to get the screen replaced on my E7440 and one of my E7240's. No contact from them yet on when they'll be out, so I suspect there is a shortage on panels holding it up. I'll update here when the panels get replaced.

Okay, so there was a small delay in the local tech getting the parts, but he came and replaced the LCD on the E7240 on Wednesday. Dell shipped him the wrong LCD for the E7440 so that had to wait. The E7240's screen is now flawless. The tech came back today with a new screen for the E7440 but the bleed is pretty significant on that, too, so he put in for another part dispatch for Monday. Hopefully that one will be as good as the E7240 screen. I'll update more after that.

Great to hear flawless displays are indeed available! I'll wait for your post about the E7440's display, and then I'll order a new one myself : )

Wow, that bleed is pretty bad -- but yes, and yes. Also, I suppose it is possible to find a good one if you're lucky enough?

Still, it is less a fault of Dell as it is the technology. Not even IPS screen is immune. Some of them suffer badly with bleed (mine has a hint of bleed at the bottom right but you need to look for it), others not so much.

Thanks for your reply and your confirmation. But as you said there is no guarantee the next one will be better. Still I plan on getting it replaced early in January, when I'm back in the office.

If we're lucky they're working on the problem. I know there are other technologies out there, but this seem like one they can fix with a little better quality control That's especially apparent when you get one that's good and one that isn't.

Update: So apparently I did get lucky with the E7240 screen replacement. I've had my E7440's screen replaced three times now and it still has significant bleed. I'm thinking about just waiting a few months before opening another ProSupport case to see if they can work out the production issues. I felt bad having the Dell tech repeatedly come out to do the same thing.
