Good thread, keep the comments coming.

Question: Can you hook up two monitors to a standard E/Port (not the Plus)?

    Thanks.

Using it for my E4200 but the DVI port doesnt seem to work. The computer doesnt recognize external monitors attached using the DVI...only VGA works.

Posting on my E4200 right now, docked in a standard ePort and viewing on a 22" connected via DVI.

Haven't tried the DisplayPort or VGA outputs yet (either individually or at same time as DVI).

Right click and look at the Screen resolution settings...do you see a second monitor attached? When I connect to DVI and press detect, it doesn't detect my 22" HDTV...Also try connecting VGA and DVI at same time and switching between them..

    Display Properties > Settings

Shows my 22" monitor (DVI) as #1
#2 is greyed out, says "Not Active"

I'll have to dig up an old monitor to try the VGA output and post back later. FYI, I'm running a Samsung 22" monitor.

You mention HDTV? Are you using a DVI>HDMI connector, I wonder if that causes any issues? Do you have a DVI computer monitor to test?

My samsung is an LCD HDTV, it has both connections...so I just hook up both my VGA and DVI to it but only the VGA works...

Well, guess what, two monitors work with the standard e-Port.

Went to Advanced and the Intel Driver properties to set them up properly.

I have a Samsung 22" connected via DVI as the primary monitor (shows up as the "Digital Display") 1680x1050

I have an old Acer 19" connected via VGA (shows up as "Monitor") 1280x1080

    Works in extended desktop mode.

The displayport also works up to 2560x1600 res on the 3008wfp monitor.

The standard e-port also drives 2 19" displays at 1280 in extended desktop mode.

I have a similar problem with my Dell D620. A few weeks ago, it would not boot past the windows screen without the monitor going into sleep mode when the laptop was docked. I can pull it out of the docking station and the laptop screen comes up fine. But when docked, no amount of pushing buttons on the external keyboard will wake it up and get the video to come out on the external monitor. I have the original XP installed. the docking station and video screen have been replaced by my tech support (it is a company computer). I can't help feeling there is a software setting that somehow got changed. the tech folks have checked that supposedly. Any body else experience this symptom? If I have to get the laptop replaced, it will be hours of reinstalling applications and quite likely I will lose some in the process. With the new monitor, I now get a "going into sleep mode" just before it goes dark after the Windows splash screen.

Is it allowed to dock and un-dock the E/port dock when the E6500 is energised?

    I'm running the following:
    E6500
    A14 BIOS
    Port Replicator dock
    4GB RAM
    Vista32

I find the design of the E/port poor. I bought it to connect the COM1 and/or the parallel port. But ports are embeded, (plastic all around) so not all connectors (only none encapsulated connector) can be hooked up. I can't imagine the reason why Dell made this poor design.
I have bought a gender changer (M-F) and screwed it up the ports now.
