Hey everybody well I have been using my dell for a little bit but lately i have been noticing some strange things with it, wasnt sure if anyone could help me or possibly experienced them for themselves.

Sometiems when i unplug the ac adapter or even plug it back in from battery power, the screen will go blank.. as in like it has been powered off. Now nothing I do gets it back up till i do a hard shutdown and reboot it.

The other thing i noticed is with the dell quickset, When i first boot on it wil work fine no issues, than after some unknown period of time it seems like the little bar for the audio level does not appear when i alter it. Although if i change the brightness level and etc it will show me those.

The machine is running vista business, so i am not sure if maybe it is related to that?

Anythoughts would be appreciated, the hdd has been making some noise like a high pitched tone, so instead of driving myself insane i did order a new harddrive

Yea i even tried to run that dell diagnostics where you test plugging in and unplugging the ac adapter and when i go to put it back in the screen goes black and i can not get it back up kind of like it is in hibernation

Go into the Control Panel, Power Settings, Hibernation tab, uncheck "enable hibernation".

Looks like I just joined to post this LOL.

When you power it up, press F2 when you see the DELL logo to go into the BIOS. After you get in, unplug the AC adapter to see if the same thing still happens. If it does, your battery probably cannot hold charge anymore.

When on battery, try hitting Fn+F8 a few times.

yea the thing is pretty strange, because now it seems to not really be happening. Such as I can sort of get the screen to go black but now it will come right back witha touch of a key.

I know there is a loud high pitched noise when its on battery, and i do get that alert stating my battery is at the end of its life, so ill buy a new one and see what happens.

ps- i put a 2 gig stick of ram in it, and wow that helps so much ha

I am seriously about to give up on this thing. I havent had that shut off issue for a little while but so far twice tonight it has done it to me, for no explainable reason. I borrowed a battery from another machine here at work thinking that had something to do with it but nope.

I see no hibernation mode set, or anything.. but the circle green power light and the battery charge light on.. such as the machine is powered on but nothing does anything

I was so happy to get this thing but im turning into a sad panda :(

If it did it in BIOS it is definitely a hardware issue.
