Thanks for the tips. On one scratch I used toothpaste and it left a shiny spot since I buffed it. I'll try a auto wax next. I think it's impossible to duplicate the eggshelf finish that is painted on. I don't have deep scratches but still annoying. I miss the days of having the scratch resistant plastic and not having to worry at all.

After finals. I don't have time to borrow a digital camera. I managed to do the palmrest too. Before it had lots of scratches from the LCD bezel. Now, it has a brushed metal look.

What grade of steel wool did you use? Something fine (000) or more coarse (0) or really coarse (3)?

Steel wool? Isn't that pretty aggressive? But, if you are able to apply a consistent finish across the entire surface, you'll essentially create a new look. Let us know how it goes.

I took the conservative plunge and used Meguire's Yellow Wax that I bought at PepBoys Automotive. Cost about $12 for a bottle. WAX ON

It worked! It took out the little scuffs. It won't take out deep scratches.

Steel wool can be really fine or really coarse. It depends on the application. I doubt the finest (0000 grade) would do much more than just make microfine scratches in the finish, something that you'd have to look from a certain angle to see. On the other hand, grade 4 would utterly destroy the surface. It could work though with a controlled application.

That's a really creative way of solving the problem though. Instead of getting rid of the scratches, let's scratch the whole lid up! That way, an extra scratch will be unnoticeable...
I'm really getting sick of that plastic film that is on my lid now to protect it from those tiny hairline scratches.

Well, for a little while I had 2 E6400s. One where I brushed it and one that wasn't modified. You would need to look VERY hard to see any difference. The one I brushed previously had small dents and scratches that were very noticeable. It went away after brushing.

For a few very minor scratches, its an extreme solution. However, if you have a bunch of dents, it makes a big difference.

Does this help prevent future scratches? I might splurge on a bottle if it does.
