I've read other complaints about the scratches on the E6400. Has anyone found a successful method of buffing out the scratches on the exterior surface of the LCD panel? Thanks.

good question. I have some scratches on my e6400 lid cover as well, and I'd love to somehow be able to get rid of them.

I heard wax was a good solution to that in the owner's lounge awhile back?

I just brushed it with steel wool. The "Brushed Metal" cover is really very poor. Why couldn't it have been boring old plain metal?

Rubbing alcohol is a solvent. All manufacturers say not to use solvents because they could damage the finish.

And yes, Dell should have given us actual brushed metal. How much extra could that cost? The painted on effect is just stupid. The steel wool does sound cool, I'll have to try that.

Search the owners thread. I also recall something about wax...

One of the biggest complaints that I had about the E6400, which was written in my E6400 review that hasn't yet been posted on the site, was the quality of the paint and the (in)stability of the software tools like DCP.

The software has been much improved over time, but the paint is still an issue that Dell hasn't corrected. When one of the biggest complaints about a model is something regarding looks rather than functionality, that is a good thing. But yes, it is still annoying.

Maybe I spend too long looking at the front of my screen and not enough time looking at the back, but I haven't noticed any scratches on my E6400.

My only concern with the paint quality is that I can see bare metal on each of the front corners of the chassis. However, I suspect that's because they are vulnerable to attack by the zipper on my computer bag.
