yes rmclock monitors the temps and the cpu speed and it will display in the system tray for easy viewing and monitoring

Thanks for the reply. It seems that rmclock doesn't support Vista 64bit...?

hmm never knew that mate sorry for that ! i will try and look for an alternative that supports voltage and multiplier adjustment

of the top of my head crystalcpuid springs to mind i used to use it on my desktop that does similar things it might support 64bit check it out let us know

were hoping for software that works in x64 that can adjust the voltages as heat is his problem so voltage manipulatiomn is essential in reducing temps

oh sorry, i thought he had resolved the heat problem after removing the dust and was just looking for a temperature monitor tool...cos he said rivatuner dosent give cpu temps or something.

winaje: was it running hot since the day you bought it, or only recently, or gradually became worse?

i ask because there is obviously a problem with your machine (was it the dust?) you should not have to undervolt to make it better, as this is just treating the symptoms and not the underlying cause

yeh he dropped a few degrees but using a voltage controlling app can decvrease temps even further which is always a good thing !

i would say he dropped more than a few degrees! 15 is a lot! but i agree, his temps are still a bit on the high side

im really curious whats causing it, because my inspiron 8600 started running a bit on the high side after 3 years of use. cleaning the dust helped, but temps were still higher than when i first bought it....unfortunately i solved the problem by accidentally dropping a pint of beer on it :(

*Disclaimer:try beer as a cooling agent at your own risk

Hi guys thanks for the interest and the replies. As I type this my GPU temp is a steady 62c. This is about 12c cooler than before I cleaned the dust off the heat sync (not running a game). However, the laptop itself still seems to get pretty hot. I currently have it in a Dell docking station, which elevates the fan intake area by about 20mm. The ambient temp in the office is about 22c. As I have stripped the fan down and cleaned it, as well as the heat sync, and reapplied thermal paste to the CPU, I am not sure what else I can do. May have to look into a couple of polished copper shims to fill the space that the thermal pads currently occupy, and use thermal paste on them.

afhstingray: yes, the machine has always run "hot" as far as I am concerned, but then again it is my first laptop, and being a Precision it has a magnesium case, which may contribute to the perception of heat.

    Thanks again guys.

the magnesium can also help disipate the heat !

turst me now u got ur fans blew out and cleared temp software will let u cool it nicely , if u are getting a gap then a shim is a must and will really help too

now that u have lowered the temps a nice margin its time to raise them again by ocing the gpu :p
