    Hi all, first post.

Have a Precision M65, 2ghz Centrino Duo, Nvidia Quadro FX350M GPU, 7200RPM HDD, 4GB RAM, and Vista 64 Ultimate.

I play WoW on this laptop, and find that the entire lower chassis gets VERY hot. Have installed RivaTuner which monitors GPU temperature, and the GPU seems to run at up to 83C...! This seems to be pretty hot.

Has anyone got any similar experience with this or a similar laptop?

    Thanks

83 is hot, but still in the safe zone.
I suggest you clean the vents, elevate the back end of the laptop when in use, or use a laptop cooler.

Thanks for the reply. I have had the heat sink off a few times. It has heat pads on the CPU and GPU. I have heard that these pads are supposed to be single use only. Would it be worth replacing the heat pads with good quality thermal paste?

the heat pads might be too thick, if you take them off, and use thermal paste, chances are you will have a gap, which you will then need to fill with slice of copper.....and getting a highly polished copper shim is not easy

i would try the thermal paste route has worked well for me in the past

but you will see most gains if you spend some time with RMclock and adjust the voltage of each of your cpu's multipliers down to the lowest stable voltage for each one, you will be surprised how much some cpu's can drop below their standard voltage and still function perfectly

i have done this with great success on all laptops iv owned in the last 3 or 4 years now i think and thats around 7 laptops ! all have seen nice temp drops and increases in battery life plus the lower voltage and less heat helps prolong the life of your machine in general

defo have a fool around with rmclock and use two instances of sprime 2004 to stress each multiplier for a good half hour atleast at a time till the testing throws up an error then bump the voltage back up a notch an you should be fine

an let us know your resulst mate so that others can benefit or if your struggling jus shout back here an we will help

remember when running sp prime start two instances as in two of the programs open and running and set the affinity of each one to a seperate core

e.g. set affinity to first sprime to core 0 and the second sprime to affinity core 1

and leave it running for about 5-10 mins as you lower the voltage untill u get errors then up the voltage 1 notch and stress it for about a half hour on your max multiplier

the other multipliers generally dont need to be tested as heavily but a good ten mins each and you will be fine

Thanks guys, I stripped the laptop down, and removed the 4-5mm of fine dust on the heat sync...!!! It's amazing how much cooler it's running, probably up to 15c. I removed one of the heat pads, screwed the heat pipe down, and there was a gap of at least 1mm, so I put the pad back. Will also have a look at RMClock; does it monitor CPU temps? The Rivatuner prog I am using seems to only monitor GPU temps.
