great news for all of us m6400 users (I got one a couple of days ago!)
there is the possibility to manually control the fan and make the laptop way more silent during web surfing. for me it was a bit annoying while web browsing to have the fans spinning up and down constantly.

    "Hold Fn+Shift then type 1 5 3 2 4! Now you can enter a menu with Fn + R.
There you can see temperatures from cpu, gpu (skin) and system i think.

And for the ones how wanna set the fan to xxxx rpm they can do this there too. Even the throttling can be disbaled.

You just have to do this every time you start the laptop.
But only, when it was completly without power.
So when you just restart it or put in in "sleeping mode" the settings won't be gone. But thats not a big deal!
You can see if its still on by the blinking led next to the "caps lock" led."

all credit goes to the user who posted it here:
diefer.de - Solution for E-Series (maybe others too)

I simply tested it to see if it works with m6400 and the answer is: YES IT WORKS GREAT!!!!

I'm not sure if you can use i8kfangui as with w7 64bit it lacks the signed driver (seem they have already fixed that too, gonna give a try later) but the internal app works great, now I have both fan manually set at 2000 rpm and it's whisper quite while keeping both cpu and vga cool enought not to worry (cpu 40c and gpu 51c). I'm on a qx9200 fitted by myself with AS5 undervolted with rmclock and quadro 2700m stock settings and stock thermal paste.
hope this helps other people like me who have been fighting with m6400 fan going on and off every few minutes

Thank you very much indeed for this great information!

I have just tried it for a few minutes and seems to work as described.

    Regards,

    Antonio

I am wondering can i put a x9100 in my precision m6400? Are there overclocking abilities allowed with this machine? It should since it can take up to a QX9300.

Yes. I run that processor in mine (read previous posts).

    No.

You can't but performance is very close anyhow so you won't notice any difference unless you're doing 3D rendering or compiling huge software projects.

Yeah i know that most quadcores don't make it a difference. Can I use programs to overclock the unlocked multipliers?

How to make Premiere CS5 work with possibly all CUDA 200 GPUs
    ________________________________________
    Here are the steps:

Step 1. Go to the Premiere CS5 installation folder.
Step 2. Find the file "GPUSniffer.exe" and run it in a command prompt (cmd.exe). You should see something like that:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Device: 00000000001D4208 has video RAM(MB): 896
    Device: 00000000001D4208 has video RAM(MB): 896
    Vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
    Renderer string: GeForce GTX 295/PCI/SSE2
    Version string: 3.0.0

OpenGL version as determined by Extensionator...
    OpenGL Version 2.0
    Supports shaders!
    Supports BGRA -> BGRA Shader
    Supports VUYA Shader -> BGRA
    Supports UYVY/YUYV ->BGRA Shader
Supports YUV 4:2:0 -> BGRA Shader
    Testing for CUDA support...
    Found 2 devices supporting CUDA.
    CUDA Device # 0 properties -
    CUDA device details:
Name: GeForce GTX 295 Compute capability: 1.3
    Total Video Memory: 877MB
    CUDA Device # 1 properties -
    CUDA device details:
Name: GeForce GTX 295 Compute capability: 1.3
    Total Video Memory: 877MB
CUDA Device # 0 not choosen because it did not match the named list of cards
    Completed shader test!
    Internal return value: 7
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you look at the last line it says the CUDA device is not chosen because it's not in the named list of card. That's fine. Let's add it.

Step 3. Find the file: "cuda_supported_cards.txt" and edit it and add your card (take the name from the line: CUDA device details: Name: GeForce GTX 295 Compute capability: 1.3

So in my case the name to add is: GeForce GTX 295

Step 4. Save that file and we're almost ready.

Step 5. Go to your Nvidia Driver control panel (im using the latest 197.45) under "Manage 3D Settings", Click "Add" and browse to your Premiere CS5 install directory and select the executable file: "Adobe Premiere Pro.exe"

Step 6. In the field "multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration" switch from "multiple display performance mode" to "compatibility performance mode"

Step 7. That's it. Boot Premiere and go to your project setting / general and activate CUDA

Tried it and tested, unbelievable speed comes from this little trick. Will try a GT9800 as well. Thought the people in here using CS5 could use this high performance tip.
