I think I'll stick with the M4400 and do some upgrades first (like an SSD, move to 64-bit OS, maybe some more RAM...if I can find it cheap).

Honestly, I am not pushing the M4400 as it is right now and it's working good. I know popping in an SSD is a smart move, and if I get the right model, I can always stick it in another lappy when I upgrade.

Thanks for all of the advice!

(And glad I asked here before I dropped any money down on that M6300...what was I thinking?)

Ok, in case anyone is still answering...I see that Dell is starting to sell of refurbished M6400s for under $500.

Which means I might be able to get one for about $450, or $100 more than the local dealer was asking for the M6300.

That would be with a T9800, 6GM RAM and a 250GB HD. Not sure what the graphics would be.

I am thinking seriously about getting one.

NewEgg in US and Canada seems to have these at a good price. Newegg.com - Refurbished: DELL Precision M6300 Notebook Intel Core 2 Duo T7800(2.60GHz) 17.0" 2GB Memory DDR2 667 120GB HDD 7200rpm DVD-RW NVIDIA Quadro FX 1600M

I'm sure that there is an advantage in buying from a dealer you know and can visit.

The NewEgg ones have the 1920x1200 screen. I wonder if they are IPS.

The Newegg price is good, but I think the DFS deal on the M6400 refurbs is better.

I'm pretty certain the M6300 did not offer an IPS screen. The ones I've seen here had the 1900x1200 LCD with single CCFL backlight. They look good for their age, but the overall system is pretty suspect, because they had the flaky Nvidia chips (similar to the problems found in the D630 and D830).

I have a feeling the M6400 refurbs are going to come down further in price shortly. They're already selling for under $500. And we may seem more M6500 refurbs showing up, which is even better!

You had 1900x1200? The one on my desk has only a 1400x900 LCD.

Personally, I agree that the M6400 is a much better idea. While, we never had the GPU problems with the M6300s I've encountered, they have seemed less reliable overall than contemporary systems.
