I can get a Precision m6300 for under $400 locally. Dealer has several off lease that look brand spanking new! That price is with 2gb ram, smallish HD, and the FX 1600m graphics card. I would bump, the ram and maybe do an HD replace with an SSD. Graphics are fine for what I need, but I don't want to get one with known problem chips. Was the FX 1600m one of those Nvidia-recalled chips?

The 17" screens on these things are very sharp and look perfect. I think they might be the higher res option. Barely any scratches on the external cases, either. These things must have been treated very gently.

Guess I am just looking for folks who might have been running one of these for a while who can tell if they think it's worth considering.
    Thanks!

    Yes.

Depending on your spec, I think $400 may have been a little much considering that these are commonly going in the $300s on eBay. Plus Nvidia.

The Precision M6300's go for around $300 locally here, similar or better specs. TBH you could probably even haggle to get it for less than $300 here locally. They're build quality is so-so.
$400 is pretty high imho. Not to mention risky.
I would say leave it, or return it if you already bought it.

Thanks for the advice and opinions. No, haven't bought it...they have plenty in stock and I am not in that big of a hurry. :)

That's why I asked here first, because I was not that familiar with the M6300. Just was impressed with the 17" Ultrasharp screen and the clean condition of the one I saw. I knew the main specs were not all that great, but good enough for what I do most of the time. On the other hand, it was sort of heavy and not very portable, really. Sounds like their asking price is too high.

    Again, thanks for the info!

Well, expecting portability from a 17" laptop is a bit too much. Personally, I'd skip it. IMHO, it's ugly design-wise and its Nvidia graphics cards are known to die quite often (there was some manufacturing defect on the Nvidia low and mid-range chips of that time). I'd go for an M6400 - IMHO, much better looking and rather more powerful, especially GPU wise.

Yeah m6400! If you can get the one with qx9300, don't think twice. I am still using it even thought it's 3.5 years already....

Ok, the refurbished M6400s are just outside my "comfort range", price-wise, but I will definitely keep on eye on them.

I already have an M4400 that is my "default" system and does everything I need for right now.

But having a larger portable screen is always a nice thing, especially if you can get a well-treated used machine cheap. :)

Man I wanted a m6400 SO BAD! If you can get one with a quad core Id say definitely get one. Otherwise stick with your m4400. I have an m4400 I am using for my server and it was a solid rig and the WUXGA screen (even the CCFL) screen was beautiful and just as useful as the 17in m6XXX.
