Precision M4600 Owners Lounge

Thanks for your response. I was just about ready to give up. it seemed odd that the bios would detect it as unknown. I have another ssd lying around, I'll try a clean win7 install. one thing tho, is the rule of thumb to use the AMD m4000 driver from the precision m4700 for the precision m4600, and the AMD m5100 driver from the precision m4800 for the precision m4600? I was thinking of going the firepro m5100 route, but I figured it wouldnt work at all.

First I would try the M4700 drivers of AMD website, as that is the card you have installed physically.
Very much doubt it, that M4800 drivers will be better in your case.

wait, why would the m4800 drivers be better? I thought the m4800 only came with the firepro m5100? I have the firepro m4000, so wouldnt the precision m4700 drivers be better?

I followed your advice, and for some reason, the firepro driver from AMD's site designed for the precision m4700 would not work on a clean install. here's the error I got:


it gave me an error log file in a .xml. here's what it looked like:



However, I used their "autodetectutility.exe" utility and it found the GPU as a hd7700M and installed the drivers for that. and it seems to be working.


however, I would rather have the firepro drivers installed as I mainly use the machine for solidworks and adobe cc, which can potentially work better with the firepro drivers.

however, isnt this card a hd7700M /firepro m4000 card? is it not the came GPU? I mean, shouldnt this card work as a m4000 card with the appropriate drivers? I dont think the hd7700M is a different card. Who knows, maybe im wrong and this came from some other dell laptop and not a precision m4700, and the ebay seller was wrong.

I am going to try again after a restart to see if I can get the firepro drivers to work.

Commissioner, when you got it working with 7770M drivers, did you happen to try using it with external monitors, either with or without a dock?

I am very curious if there is a way to get that working.

 

I actually installed windows from scratch with my laptop on the dell advanced port replicator dock (USB 2.0 one, not the USB3.0 one).
I installed all my drivers like this as well. including the radeon 7700m drivers and firepro drivers.
After the initial firepro m4000 drivers failed, I installed the 7700m drivers, and then uninstalled them, to try and get the firepro drivers to work (firepro drivers certified to work with solidworks). I redownloaded the m4000 firepro drivers and installed them, and this time there were no errors. However, nothing worked, and windows & GPUz still picked it up as a generic VGA adapter. Yes I restarted my machine appropriately as well.

I believe the GPU I received from the seller on ebay was indeed a 7700m/firepro card, but it had the 7700m GPU bios installed on it. thus, whenever I try using the firepro drivers it says "generic VGA apadter" but whenever I use the 7700m drivers is registers fine and everything works (including multiple monitors thru dock)
for completeness, I have U2410 and a 2007wfp in portrait mode connected to my dock.
with the firepro drivers installed, multiple monitors do not work, and the display is mirrored on my m4600 screen and my u2410. the 2007wfp does not work as all. I cannot extend monitors either, cause the drivers do not work with the card.

I believe there is a way to fix this, as techpowerup HAS the firepro m4000 GPU bios available for download, and I can flash it on there, but I do not think it is worth the trouble. I am going to return the card to the ebay seller and try to get a firepro m5100 card instead

finally, I decided to uninstall all graphics drivers and use the "autodetectutility.exe" utility again to reinstall the 7700m graphics drivers, and oddly enough AMD recommended to install the firepro control center.
I installed everything that was recommended other than that stupid bundled gaming app, and it is still picked up as a 7700m. I have no idea why/how it is recognized as a 7700m yet can still have the firepro control center. I dont know why. The problem I have with this is if adobe cc has a simple Look Up Table of cards ok for gpu acceleration, the 7700m is NOT on their list of GPU acceleration cards supported. the firepro m4000 is though. what a pile of stupidity man.

 

Wait, so your saying that a firepro m5100 is picked up by windows as a radeon 8800?
Did your firepro m4000 get picked up by windows as a radeon 7700?
