Sorry, I withdraw what I said. I was too fast to post, the issue is actually still there, it just disappeared for a while as maybe there was more activity on my laptop at that time.

Download GPU-Z and have a look at this (links provided).
As soon as you connect an external monitor, a bug with the catalyst driver OR the Dell BIOS (or both) will push the clock up to 250Mhz and the memory to its full speed, releasing a lot of heat.
Worse, even with no external screen, some earlier M4600s would never idle before Dell fixed the problem by issuing a new panel, late 2011.

Those who bought a FirePro M4600 before November 2011 will probably always be affected by the problem, unless they buy a new panel.

But even the heat is not such a problem as long as the fans are managed properly...

The issues with GPU going full clocks while external display connected is also noticable with normal PCs. It's not DELL/Laptops exclusive :)
    Just FYI :)

No update so far... Hope is fading away day after day but I trust SpeedFan will eventually solve the problem. In the meantime, everybody here should call Dell and ask for a real fix, else I don't think they'll even care to listen.

As soon as I have something I'll post it here, hopefully you guys will still be checking this thread when this happens (could be months away...)

Yeah i am really disappointed. I called the Dell Service in germany to fix that problem. they changed graphic card, mainboard and fan. nothing changed. Then i tried to call the service in Japan. They wanted to change the same things again, but they didnt even listen to me when i said, that it is not gonna solve the problem. i wanted to change the panel and send them the link to this forum and also the vid on youtube about the fan issue. finally i gave up. even the service does not know that this problem exists.
So when im doing office stuff, i just turn off powerplay and set the powerlevel to "energy saving". its quite annyoing to do that everytime but at least the damn fan noise doesnt annoy me. i really regret that i spent so much money for that.

By the way, does anyone of you know how to keep the keyboard illuminated ?

The control panel applet only allows up to 5mn, whereas older versions allowed it to stay always on. I find the 30 seconds default makes no sense as the purpose is precisely to see the keyboard when it's dark, so one can press the right key. How are we supposed to see it when it turns off automatically after such a short time ?

I haven't tried anything yet, such as to install the Vostro driver or actually mod the Precision driver (it's a .net hell), so feel free to share your insights. Thanks in advance!

    Hi everyone,

I'm a software engineer in singapore. I just ordered a Dell M4600, it doesn't arrive yet. I want to ask if is every Dell M4600 has the Fan Noise Problem? Or does anyone solved this problem?

    Thank You
