I am curious as to how much performance could be squeezed out of my M4500 with Extreme processor using SETFSB. Apparently we need to know the exact clock generator (PLL??) that the M4500 uses before you can even try. Anyone have a M4500 Motherboard handy they could check this out?

You might pose this question on that other forum I got the overclocking information from. They have the developer of the software answering questions there and he is obviously very knowledgeable.

I noticed that the extreme version of the processor costs $500 more than mine.... I can see why I chose what I chose. But with the M4600 I'll upgrade as long as I am not spending personal $.

people trying to oc extreme with the 1800m gpu:

I saw somewhere in the forum about extreme + 1800m throttling at full load for both. not sure if that can be stopped with trottlestop, but oc the cpu will def cause more issues for throttling.

just wanted to give a heads up

Yes, no problem with OCing the graphics card. The software I write/wrote on the M-series if for flight simulation and this machine way outclasses what we use in the simulator... Dell workstations that are now 3-4 years old. So there is no point in pushing it too far since I can't deploy it anyhow, but it is fun to learn how.

Obviously when I asked about GPU overclocking I didn't expect to unleash this hornets nest of CPU overclocking. :p

However, I'm a little bit confused about your above figures, as I don't know really what they mean and know next to nothing about overclocking - but it seems you have boosted your CPU performance by about 2.5x?!

That seems an enormous amount, i.e. a lot more than the 10% gain you seem to get with mucking about with GPU overclocking. Or have I hugely misunderstood?

Well, I have received my M4500 - it is 740QM, FX1800M, 8GB and 256GB PM810. I use it on Linux and I really like the SSD.

When it comes to heat it's good. When not stressed the CPU stays between 48 and 60 something with 1-3 degrees of temperature range between the cores.
GPU is then between 46 and 50 something. Somewhere above 60 for CPU the fan kicks in, cools CPU to ~48 and GPU ~46 and then stops and temperatures start rising again.

When it comes to noise I have mixed feelings. In my opinion the fan is quite loud. On the first level which I think (i8k on Linux) is around 2600 rpms it's really loud for me. I moved from T61p to M4500 and Thinkpad's 2500 rpms was barely audible - I guess I could say that the hard drive was louder than the fan - it changed when fan reached 3000 - 3200. Here the hard drive is of course inaudible ;).

Would you mind sharing whether your fans are also quite loud (at the first level)? Maybe I should contact Dell because there is a problem with my fan.

    Regards,
    Piotr

I agree that the extreme processor option is the way to go especially if this is the route you want to go. Considering that with the I7-940XM Processor the my M4500 laptop was just a tad less than $1200 - it wasn't a bad deal all the way around.

While using throttlestop, the only throttling I observed during my tests/benchmark process was "Thermal Throttling" when the temperatures I think were around ~100c There was no other throttling when you used the throttlestop settings I previously mentioned.

    Which program please?

The two main benchmarks I used to gauge my performance boost from Throttlestop (I used several others in the free SISANDRA suite) were

Dhrystone - Dhrystone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    and

    Whetston - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whetstone_(benchmark)

When the fans are on "full" (which really doesn't seem alot to my ears) they are audible. I wish the fans would be a bit more forceful as I think they would cool the processor/gpu even more which would allow a higher overclocking before the unavoidable Intel Thermal Throttling.

    THROTTLING ISSUE...

after getting my motherboard replaced, im experiencing throttling issue with 820qm + 1800m.....

when temp for gpu reaches 82 or so, and cpu at around 79-80, the cpu throttles... and comes back to full in a few mins..

anyone experiencing this while stressing both gpu and cpu? cause my previous mobo did NOT have this issue... wondering if the mobo is screwed up

If you are asking what software for GPU OC, it is GPUTool_CTP1. This works just fine, but I refuse to run the machine at the temps cited above....
