As far as i know the only difference is that the 740 has 2MB L3 cache less and has 130Mhz less Turbo Mode (2.93GHz vs 3.06GHz).

No. It means Dell can and does ship a two 8 GB module configuration.

This configuration is expensive, at the moment.

    Hi
    I just ordered a M6500 - outlet:
    i7-920 + 16GB RAM + 2 X 256GB SSD (RAID0)

I just wonder i7-920 is not the i7-920XM?
I could not find the i7-920 in Dell store?

If so which one is better ?
I need it for software development, running Visual Studio and few VMware instances on the same time.

    Thanks Alon.

Too much text to read. You might consider one post per topic...

I have M4500's with the 1600 x 900 anti-glare white LED screen, Quadro FX880M, and quad core i7. This configuration hits the sweet spot for me in terms of performance and portability. I really like the screen (colors, contrast/brightness, viewing angles, etc.).

While more windows desktop area is always better, IMO, 15.4 inches is too small for 1920 x 1080. To much eye strain.

I also have E6510's with the 1366 x 768 LED screen. While acceptable, the viewing characteristics (color, contrast/brightness, viewing angles, etc.) of the screen on my E6510's are not nearly as good as the M4500 1600 x 900 screen.

    HTH.

Odd that they don't mention the option at all in the online ordersystem... Surely they must be missing out on some sales that way? Even in this thread there are messages from people who "regret that the machine is limited to 8GB".

Then I would have been accused of flooding. ;)

That's what I wanted to hear! Just a shame of the aspect ratio... :( Only consolation is that when docked I'll be able to use my 21" 4:3 screen anyway. Just to make absolutely sure though: the Quadro FX 880M DOES support 1600x1200 resolution for external screen, right??

How does the overall build-quality compare to an E6510?

sent mine back, it just doesnt look like a laptop that is worth over 3ks. Plus the battery life was awful. i hardly got 30 minutes with a little bit of cad usage.

LOL....that sound like the best way to judge a laptop's value! :p
And yeah, a loaded laptop won't run long on a standard battery, if you want long battery you should buy an weaker unit ;)

Could somebody please confirm or deny whether the Quadro FX 880M in their M4500 supports 1600x1200 resolution for an external screen?

Sounds pretty obvious, but I need to be absolutely sure. I really don't want to find out that it doesn't if I would order one.
