Haha good to see another M4600 user out there still (I thought we were extinct this is from late 2011, right?) :D I'm on a higher spec M4600; on the plus upside, the MB/parts are easily replaceable these days, so won't upgrade unless it becomes too expensive to upgrade / or if I see a good deal with a M.2 unit. Have repasted it a few times now. Also through work, have seen the HP G4 /Lenovo P51 / Dell 7520 so far (can't justify the cost) myself. For what it's worth, comparing 7710 vs M4600's key travel, you're losing a slight amount of travels. Do you really need the GPU upgrade? (all of a sudden these laptop have become gaming machines; I expect where as you used to be able to buy the MXM after market, now, err if the graphics fails after warranty, err good luck). I expect, if one notable thing that has improved, aside from M.2 and graphics - would be that it draws less power on non heavy workload with the newer platforms. On my RGBLED version the Quadro is always on. Err.

    TB18DC dock is in.

Not much to say. Other than the power/data cable that goes to the laptop, it looks just like the TB16 dock. The power/data cable is much thicker than the cable on the TB16. It's even thicker than the laptop side of the cable coming from the 240W adapter. Because of the double-Thunderbolt connection, I can't try it with my 7510. Will have to wait another ~2 weeks for the 7530 to show up.

The dock came with a 240W adapter but it does not appear to be the "new" rounded style that ships with the 7730, it's the same brick that came with past 17" systems and the TB16.

Any specs for RAM supported on 7730 available?

Will Crucial Ballistix Sport LT DDR4-2666 CL16-18-18 work?

Not sure how picky the new Precisions are on different CLs.

Having nothing to base this on, I was looking at getting two Ballistix Sport 32Gb kits to replace the 8Gb stick, but then I wouldn't be mixing CLs - they'd be all 16.

That was until I noticed in the service manual that I'd have to remove the keyboard to access the secondary memory module, and I'm not really comfortable doing that in a brand new machine, I can never do it right.

Yesterday I took the plunge, following some of the advice here to just go with the config I really wanted, and count on Dell's warranty for the whole thing: 7730 (i9, 64Gb RAM, P5200, 1Tb SSD, 4k screen).

Not that it makes much of a difference at this point, but I got a Dell sales rep to remove Win 10. I'm counting on RHEL drivers becoming available by the time the laptop is delivered (July 9).

My experience has been that Precision is not picky about RAM CLs, as long as you don't mix them. (Usually it will work with mixed CLs but the RAM speed will be lowered.)

Indeed, there are two RAM slots easily accessible under the bottom panel and the other two are under the keyboard. The keyboard is not difficult to remove but I understand that it can be a hassle to get to those slots. If you buy the machine with just two RAM modules then they should be installed under the keyboard so that future upgrades will be able to be done using the bottom modules. If you go this route though, you'll want to make sure that the modules that you buy to add on have the same characteristics as the modules that came with the system (speed/CL/etc.).

Currently have an XPS 15 9550 for personal use and a Precision 5510 for work. I bought a Hades Canyon NUC recently with a GTX 1080Ti egpu but it isn't really fitting my needs. Decided to take the plunge yesterday on a Precision 7530 to hopefully replace all 3:

    Core i9-8950HK
    Quadro P3200
    FHD Touch
    256GB NVME (I have 2x 1TB 970 Pros to install myself)
8GB RAM (I have 4x16GB 3200MHz RAM to install myself)
    Intel 9260 wifi
    Verizon LTE WWAN
    Digital Persona Fingerprint Reader
    6 Cell Battery

    Delivery date July 9
