Precision 7530 & Precision 7730 owner's thread

Hello,

In order to change SSD (or whatever we want inside the notebook) on 7530, I followed Solid State Drive Installation Guide. Chapter 3, Step 3 "Pry around the edges of the base cover", is a PITA... base cover is nearly impossible to remove. Is there a way to do it without ruining cover or system?

Second question: is it normal for the Nvidia Quadro P5200 / P4200 / P3200 / P2000 / P1000 Graphics Driver (version 24.21.13.9826, A01) to not be able to be installed on my P3200 setup? NVidia setup says system is not compatible. Only Windows Update driver (version 24.21.13.9827) can be installed.

I thought I would update you all with the replacement of my 7730. It's working really well! No more fan clicking noise, and everything is working as advertised.

In the spirit of trust but verify, I used CrystalDiskMark to test all 4 M.2 NVMe SSD slots in the machine, and all of them reported very similar timings.

I also found that slot #6 (the one on the right side, when upside down, above the battery) is NOT available to participate in a RAID configuration. I assume that a different controller (other than the Intel chipset) is behind it.

I placed 3 1TB 970 Pros in slots 3, 4, and 5 (they are on the left side, when upside down) and created a RAID 0, which works very well. I placed a 2TB 970 EVO in slot 6 (I backup to this drive on idle, because the RAID 0 is 3 times as susceptible to failure).

Also, I have found the fingerprint reader to work well. It requires that one leave their finger on it for a couple of seconds before it will recognize you. This is different from my iPhone/iPad which seems to work instantaneously.

Just yank it off. I like to start near the fan exhaust ports in one corner, I think it is easy to grab from those. It has clips that go all the way around so once you get a couple of them loose then it should be easy going. It might take some force but it's a really sturdy piece, it would be really hard to break it. I found that after the first removal, subsequent removals go much easier.

 

I measured 7mm between the two ports on my 7730.

 

There's been a bunch of new drivers released for the 7730, including the categories "chipset", "dockingstation" and "system management". Has anyone tried them with the TB18 yet?

 

Dell drivers download page is a bit misleading. Somehow they update the "last update time" quite frequently, but without changing the driver packages. You have to look up the release date of the driver to see which is new. Unfortunately you cannot sort by that date.

Latest "real" updates were "Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver" for the laptop and "ASMedia USB Extended Host Controller" and a firmware for the Dock all of which should fix the problem that the Docks is reported to not deliver enough power.

Nothing for the USB from Dock stutter except to disable C states.

 

Damn, that's just bad practice! All these drivers that are so-called updated, but have release dates of over a month ago... Some even from before the 7*30 release date!

That thunderbolt controller driver update did fix that specific issue, but still it won't power the laptop half the docking attempts...

 

I don't understand this "updated driver" practice as well. Not very helpful.

Did you install the firmware 1.0.6 for the dock as well, to get rid of the won't power problem?

 

Dock firmware 1.0.6 doesn't fix the "dock usually won't power the laptop at all" issue.

 

So, I just installed the ASMedia USB driver that was released the 7th of september...

DON'T DO IT! My regular USB keyboard has been having tons of hiccups since. Keys not registering, keys getting stuck,... ugh!

SupportAssist won't even let me roll back the driver, the button to revert didn't do anything at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Those multiple exclamation marks were not on purpose, it's what the keyboard did. I had to correct like 10 similar cases in this single post...)
