Precision 7530 & Precision 7730 owner's thread

It is quite annoying for such a premium product. You do get used to it, but it would be nice if it didn't happen. I have often thought about adding a thin layer of quality foam under it, but have never gotten round to it.

Never removed the lattice, as my fingers always find the keys....

I haven't really had this problem much. That said, I think many of the keyboard flex problems in the 7530/40/7730/40 arise from the inverted layout, which gives a fair bit of wiggle room (not a good thing in notebooks). The thing is that the lattice reduces (or at least, feels like reducing) the finger travel of the keys, which is already not very high to begin with, and I'm not the most accurate typist, so my fingers tend to find the lattice a lot more.

I do wish the keyboard had a little more uniformity.

Tiny, niggling issues like these add up—everything from the CPU overheating under load, to the UHD display using the older 40 pin 0.4 mm pin pitch, to the displays themselves being 6b + FRC (and still 60 Hz), to the GPU power limits, to the keyboard flex and loose lattice...

I think that I have a "sheet" of thin thermal pad material that might fit the bill, maybe if I can find it I will cut some out and stick it under that part of the keyboard and see how that works.

 

Speaking of thermal pads, I replaced my palmrest a short while ago (accidentally screwed in the longer M2x5 screws into the wrong places, causing two ugly bumps), and they now come with a thermal pad for the PCH. I didn't originally have one with my first iteration of the 7530 back in August 2018.

 

Thanks. If you do try it, I guess it will be trial and error as to whether to use the thermal pads only in the area where the noise occurs or to use it under the whole keyboard. Please do let us know how it goes if you do try. Thanks/

 

Hi, are there the same heat pipes in the 7530 in all the configurations or do they change based on the specs? I've ordered a 8750h + p1000 model.
Is the battery able to be upgraded from 64 w/hr 4 cell to 97 w/hr 6 cell if there is no hard drive?

Yes. See this post for heatsink differences between the different graphics cards. The configuration with no dGPU has one fewer heatpipe on the left fan side, too.

cool thanks. I've ordered one with 8gb ram. I'm a pretty light user but do I need dual channel for light gaming? if i were to put another 8gb in would I need to tear down the laptop to get to the ram slot under the keyboard or would the ones at the back work?

 

You don't really have to "tear down" the laptop to get to the slots under the RAM. They keyboard can be removed pretty simply without removing any other components. I believe that the preferred configuration for dual-channel would be to install the sticks together (either both under the keyboard, or both on the bottom side of the system).

(I don't think that you even need to bother removing the bottom cover to disconnect the keyboard cables if you are just accessing the RAM slots. Just carefully move the keyboard out of the way once you remove the lattice and screws. There won't be a whole lot of room to maneuver it though.)

If you get another 8 GB RAM you will want to make sure that it has the same speed and CAS latency as the one that arrives in your system. (You won't be able to check the CL until you receive the system.)

 

So, I've consistently encountered a very strange problem on my 7530—the mouse/trackpad stops responding to clicks/taps, and trackpad gestures stop working randomly. A fix I have discovered is to call up Task Manager using the Ctrl+Shift+Esc shortcut, use the arrow/tab keys to navigate to explorer.exe, and restart the process. Everything is fine after that, but it happens maybe once to twice a day, sometimes not at all. Has anyone else encountered this?
