This is less of a Dell problem, than a NVIDIA problem. However, the recent 435.21 driver has implemented PRIME offloading for Turing GPUs, which is a 1-to-1 analogue of how Optimus works on Windows. This only needs an update to X.Org which hasn’t been made official yet, but there is a PKGBUILD here.

The new driver also implements a fair few power-saving measures on Turing GPUs, too.

One thing that you have to consider is that officially xeon 2186M supports up to 64 GB ram.
    https://ark.intel.com/content/www/u...2186m-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-80-ghz.html

    Dell website actually has "128GB, 4x32GB, 2666MHz DDR4 Non-ECC" option for 7530, but
every 8th gen mobile cpu just support max 64gb, so i'm not really sure if you'll be able to use more than that on 7530 with 2186M.

But did you received that unit from Dell or still waiting for it ?

If not, i would ask them (at least for the same price) if they can replace those 4x32gb sticks (point them out the max ram supported for 2186m) with 4x16GB ECC ram@2666mhz (just because your unit has a xeon cpu + win10pro for workstation as o.s.).

Imho, this configuration would have 'more sense'.

That and a Quadro, though yeah, your points are definitely valid as all get-out.

Price isn't relevant at this point because it's a warranty swap (see sig)

Being from "Dell Outlet", those are kinda "ship as they are", and yeah, I'm still waiting on it. It's configurable up to 128GB on the Dell site though, so it's gotta be supported somehow, you'd think.

Hmm. For some reason my CPU's TDP appears to be locked to 50 W.

After a bit of searching, i've found this user who has 2186M+128gb and reported no issues about it (but he has a 7730 though).

So yes, it looks like intel is not telling the truth here.

If you're just taking the best config they can give to you, imho 64gb ecc ram to pair with 2186m is a better choice than 128gb non ecc. But again it's just my thought here.

I checked with Dell, basically asking why a machine like that would have non-ECC memory and only integrated graphics while asking if there were any other units up on deck for this swap... I mean I can always sell the memory and grab a couple sticks of ECC memory from that. I've no need for 128GB of RAM (I mean, 32GB is sufficient for most of what I do).

Edit: they're going to look for a different build that has a Quadro in it, but won't switch non-ECC to ECC because "like for like" I guess. [?]

Maybe someone will be interested. I have successfully replaced the dell 7730 laptop screen with a B173HAN01.6 FHD 120Hz 40Pin EDP. The screen works great and produces the claimed 120hz. If anyone has questions, ask.

Intel reported maximum addressable memory as 64 GB, because that was the memory that was available then. 32 GB SODIMMs are an exceptionally recent thing.

You could technically address the full 2^64 – 1 bits of memory (assuming the hardware had the capability to do so, which it currently doesn't, anyway), over just 2 channels, if you had giant memory sticks that had 9 exabits of memory each. Problem is that both sticks would draw an immense amount of electrical power to maintain power to every single memory cell.

Likewise, we could only build 32 GB SODIMMs and DIMMs because Samsung discovered ways to bring down the voltage needed to address that much memory in a single slot, in a single channel.
