Precision 7510 Owner's Thread

The keyboard is not the easiest keyboard to replace but it is certainly doable. The keyboard bezel is kind of the strange part. When removing it it will feel like it is going to break but it can take a bit more force than you think. When I got my 7510 the keyboard was not a back lit one, so I bought a back lit keyboard and it installed without a hitch. The extra cable socket for the back light is already installed on the motherboard.

 

What docking stations are you guys using nowadays with the 7510? I got the 240W E-Port, but im unsatisfied with it. I was looking at the WD15 docking stations as an alternative, but I've been reading some up and down reviews about it. Heres the one I'm looking at:

I used the WD15 for a while and it worked totally fine for me. I upgraded to TB16 when I got some 4K monitors. The WD15 works with 2x 1080p 60Hz or 1x 4K 30Hz.

The WD15 and Thunderbolt docks cannot fully power the system. You have to plug the dock cable and a separate power cable into the laptop.

 

Thanks for the input. I'm using 2 Asus 1080p monitors. So when you say it cannot fully power the system, does that mean it will not charge the laptop?

 

The WD15 can only provide 130W to the system and the 7510 wants 180W. If you do not connect a separate power adapter, you will get CPU and GPU throttling. (In my experience is is pretty aggressive throttling when you connect an under-powered adapter, definitely makes the system sluggish.)

 

I've seen the WD15s with 180w adapters. Is it not able to actually produce that much even though its rated as such?

 

The power adapter attached to the dock does not translate to the power that it can pass through to the system. It can only pass 130W over the USB-C cable. (You will find this documented in the tech specs for the dock.)

Most Dell systems operate with 130W of power or less. On the business side, only the Precision 7000-series needs more power than that. So, the need to attach a power cable in addition to the dock cable is specific to these systems.

 

Ahhhh ok. Man this sucks. I still think Im going to return the E-Dock because I dont like the way it fits and how much space it takes up. I didnt know the space between the back of the dock and the laptop was so large. Those TB16s seem pretty expensive, but Im looking at a few used ones right now at decent prices.

 

Note TB16 has the same issue as WD15 when it comes to powering the laptop (dock cable + power cable required).
