If the point stick rubber thing hold hard dust, it can potentially scratch the screen. And if high pressure is applied it could have a 1 point of high pressure, due to the touchpoint, and have break the screen.

Now, I haven't read anyone having this issue and wait to see what happens (well they haven't speak up on this forum). So I can only guess. Sorry, for not being very helpful, but that is the best I can think of possible issues.

I still STRONGLY suggest to contact Dell and have it fixed, even re-build your system if necessary, as this very very bad. I have a feeling that any consequences lead to that might lead Dell to tell you "Your case goes under accidental damage protection which you don't have it." And I dont' think they will cover scratches as well. I will be surprise if they do, as I sure won't.
If I am not mistaken LCD's on laptop are VERY expensive, especially that you consider that Dell, like other OEMs sells laptop parts at a high price. I read on this forums, that someone paid 150$ for the backlit keyboard.. I doubt it actually cost that much, as Logitech Illuminated keyboard, with Logitech impressive service, higher build quality than this laptop keyboard, more keys, and 3 year warranty is significantly cheaper than what Dell charges you (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/4740&cl=us,en). If it's true that sell parts at very high price.. it is something to consider as it might cost a lot to repair.

I'd get this sucker fixed. It's not something I would take lying down.

I'd like to get it fixed but the downtime would be unacceptable for me.

You don't have Next Business Day On Site service, cause if you do, it can be fixed the next business day, all in front of you. Or maybe you can see with Dell if they can ship you a new keyboard and you can do it yourself.. but then if you break something I don't think it will be covered... but a keyboard on this laptop, is fairly straight forward. Anyway, in any case it should be fixed, because any damage occurs.

So I talked with Dell today and was basically told that it was something that is normal and that if it is bothering me I should just return the computer. When I pressed for the backlit keyboard I was told they would only swap like for like. So tomorrow I have to call Dell customer service/sales and see if they'll send me another keyboard. Otherwise, I'm returning...

Well that sucks... I would have aksed the supervisor though. Like call tech support, and immediately ask for the supervisor, and see what they can do.

Thanks for the PM, its was very helpful. The agent handling my problem is gone today so I'll have to contact someone else at Dell.

Call again and say that a row of keys has stopped working. They will send you a keyboard for that.

I've never had a problem like this, but if you don't put the laptop in your backpack along with a bunch of stuff (which could be pushing against your screen, something I would never do), does it happen? I always put my laptop in a dedicated compartment or at least against something flat that is as big as the laptop.

Well, I have a heavily padded laptop compartment built into my backpack, along with another soft case on the laptop itself...and I still get all kinds of keyboard marks on the screen. However, it's not bad enough that I'll want to waste my time getting Dell support just to replace that one party.

Well you paid for it. Why not?
I don't have the issue, and no one should.
