Meaning that COH can make use of DX10 effects. Installing DX9, however, will not delete the latest version you have installed. Windows loads the necessary DX files for the specific game.

There should be no side effects from installing the laptopvideo2go drivers, besides slightly reduced performance in some applications. Since the 160M is a Quadro, which is a workstation class GPU, the drivers are optimized for business applications. The LV2G are for GeForce cards, which are consumer class. That means that they are optimized for games. There are virtually no risks running the LV2G drivers - I have them too - and you can always switch back to Dell's if they give you trouble.

Oh! I said I had not played games for 5 years but this not mean that CoH was bought then, I got it yesterday (downloaded from the gamespot site, I wonder if the file might have been corrupted).

Anyway, it is not working. I think I am going to take it as a sign that I should not be playing games.

On a different note, I am worrying now about that maybe something is not right with the computer. I am still on time to return it, I got it from the Dell outlet maybe it something is still wrong with it.

What is not working... the installation of the driver, DX9, the starting of COH?

I downloaded the game from gamestop and then tried to run the game and once I clicked on the icon of the game I get immediately the error message I put in the first post.

This message appeared first right after it said that the direct 9.0c had been installed (the direct 9.0c that came with the download, I thought then that maybe it had not been installed but now it is not clear to me)

I would put 95% confidence on the fact that you're not having a hardware problem. Perhaps the download is corrupted, but I still doubt that that's it. You tried the laptopvideo2go drivers and it still didn't work? Try reinstalling the game, now that you have directx 9 installed.

No, I did not install the drivers of laptopvideo2go because I do not want to solve this issue but create other issues. I did not buy this computer to play games, I was just curious about trying this game (as a general note, I was surprised on how little the games evolved since 8-5 years ago).

I might later on try your driver solution as I feel more comfortable with updating drivers, but I wonder why others did not have issues and I did. Okay, no one seemed to have experience with the CoH game but it would be surprising that this is special to this game.

Laptopvideo2go drivers will not cause any problems typically. The absolute worst that could go wrong is that it'll break the sleep/hibernate functions of your laptop. You can always revert back to an older edition if that's the case.

Thank you for all your help. The problem is now solved. The problem was with the directx files. It seems that when I installed directx 9.0c from the downloaded game or when I downloaded directly from the web it didn't do anything (I had a suspition of that since this instalation did not take even 1second). So after reading several contradictory info on the web I followed one of the suggestion that seemed more reliable.

    I went here:

    DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en

and did the the download. The Microsoft DirectX® End-User Runtime provides updates to 9.0c and previous versions of DirectX. So I guess that head on instalation of directx 9.0c on Vista does not work but this update approach does give directx 10 what is missing.
